Five-star signee D'haquille Williams was returning punts, and looked comfortable doing it.

Justin Hokanson ?@JHokanson · 11m
Both Cameron Artis-Payne and Peyton Barber got "first-team" reps at RB on offense during fast-paced drills to start the practice.

Not sad, just don't know what to think with the words punt returner and comfortable in the same sentence.

•While the offense was doing pace, the defense was doing pursuit drills, and the No. 1 group was Carl Lawson at left defensive end, Elijah Daniel on the right and Gabe Wright and Angelo Blackson inside. Kris Frost and Cassanova McKinzy manned the linebacker spots, Robenson Therezie was at the Star, Jonathon Mincy and Jonathan Jones took over corner, and Holsey and Whitehead at safety.

•The No. 2 defensive unit had Cameron Toney and Kenny Flowers at linebacker, Mackenro Alexander at the Star, Kamryn Melton and T.J. Davis at corner, Derrick Moncrief on the boundary and Johnathan Ford at free safety. Jeff Whitaker's likely the third player. Ben Bradley and Montravius Adams manned the tackles, with Tyler Nero and Gimel President on the outside.

This might be the first season in YEARS I am more excited about the defense than the offense.

How long has it been, 2004? I can't remember it's been so long. The secondary has been an absolute nightmare forever. Just a little depth, a little quality depth, and we walk away with a national championship last year.

There are no Ted Roof/Jake Holland recruits in this new group or last years. I can't imagine what this team will be able to accomplish with a top 10/15 defense. Saban is definitely sweating bullets. By the way, the last two times Saban has faced Ellis he's lost.

Also, Gus Malzahn was the only coach wearing shorts in the chilly, damp weather this morning. What does it mean!?

When you got big balls they need air.

05/06 defense were pretty nasty. Even 07 was pretty solid.

What year was it that the secondary delivered the bad hit on the Georgia wide receiver (targeting rule?)

Too damn excited for next season. D-line is gonna be NASTY. These guys might legitimately end a few QB's careers.

Never heard JHS any quieter than 3 seconds after that hit was laid.
