Jesus christ man.

You already said it was coach speak... now you aren't sure if it is.

See, you wrote it right here

I think it is coach speak, and I don't think he needs to tell the media all positions are open. It's a cop-out.

quote:

Make up your mind ffs.

I did. I think it's coach speak. If for some reason it's not coach speak, I gave my reason while it's still a bullshite thing to say.

And like I said earlier, no matter what was said, you'd find a problem with it.

No, that's not true. I would have been perfectly fine if Malzahn would have said something like "We have to improve at certain positions, so we will have players competing for the starting spot at those positions." Like I said, telling the media/fans/team that ALL positions are open sends the message no one has played well enough to keep their spot, and I don't agree with that.

I don't know man... sounds like coach speak to me.

What does he tell the media when the follow up question is "which spots exactly coach?" And what does he tell the entire team when it gets brought up?

Hey coach!!! Exactly which starters were you talking about????

Does he point out the subpar individuals in front of everyone and say that they're playing like shite? When Monty asks him if he was talking about him does he say "No, you're playing fine, but Lambert next to you looks like a bag of flaming dog poop."

How is that handled in your expert opinion? I'm sure you're well versed in leading 100 18-22 year olds who are analyzed every moment of their lives from HS through college. And don't forget the added pressure that is college football in the south.

How do you handle those situations in which egos are now on the spotlight because you decided to narrow down certain individuals and exclude them from the entire team?

This is a team game right? You ever played team sports? Ever have to accept punishment based on the acts of other individuals? Ever have to run till you puked because someone else fricked up? You ever wonder why coaches DON'T exclude certain players from situations because of the way the rest of the team might respond to it?

1.) They are. They can keep competing, but the first string guys who have played well shouldn't have to "win back" their starting job just because the team is failing to produce

I'm just gonna kill this right here. If they're playing well enough to be "safe" then they'll have no trouble winning an open competition for that spot. This is a nonissue for anyone who is playing well.

I don't think it is wrong for a HC to give his players notice that we are playing like garbage and that everyone needs to work hard if they want to continue to be on the field.

If a player has been playing well and works hard in practice, he is not at risk of losing his starting job.

They aren't having to win the job back. It is theirs until they lose it. This really isn't a difficult concept. The only thing that is different now is that they are on notice that they aren't guaranteed to start just because they are a starter. Play well, you play. Play poorly, someone else gets a shot.

Nothing Gus said says that any starter has lost his job. However, just because they have started all year doesn't mean they should just be allowed to continue starting. If they are not getting the job done, someone else should be given a shot. If he is worse, then go with the better option. That is how every top program operates. Complacency is the enemy of every team.

You mean the starter that was benched to give someone else a shot?

No it does not. It is about competition and always striving to be better.

While he was at USC, Pete Carroll had "Competition Tuesday." At Tuesday practice every single startinv position was open for competition. That is the enviroment one needs to build. I believe he still does this in Seattle too.

What is bullshite is having starters like Frost, Lambert, Matthews who play soft and poorly and never see any consequences for screwing up. Took until Frost senior year for a coach tob finally put him on blast.

This is fine and all but it's all fluff. Do you think Bush or Leinart would have really been benched if they had an off day on one of these days? I'm all for eliminating complacency, but most of it hollow.

If I was coach, no one would have a starting spot week to week. You would have to continuously earn your job.
