Since we've only played one real team (Clemson), let's check and see how we did compared to how Louisville did.

Clemson's offense vs. AU Defense:

Plays: 67
Rush Yards: 96
Pass Yards: 185
Total Yards: 281
Yards per play: 4.19

Clemson's Offense vs. Louisville's D:

Plays: 81
Rush Yards: 297
Pass Yards: 316
Total Yards: 613
Yards per play: 7.57

Our defense held Clemson to 331 fewer yards than Louisville did and and we did it on the road (Louisville was at home).

But now look at how the two offenses did against Clemson.

AU offense vs. Clemson's D:

Plays: 66
Rush Yards: 38
Pass Yards: 79
Total Yards: 117 <------
Yards per Play: 1.77 <----

Louisville's offense vs. Clemson's D:

Plays: 69
Rush YardS: 116
Pass Yards: 317
Total Yards: 433
Yards per Play: 6.28

Louisville only ran 3 more plays than us and still ended up with 316 more yards than we did. So, in essence, AU's offense played as poorly against Clemson's D as Louisville's defense played against Clemson's offense.

Our defense is very good, but not good enough to overcome 1.77 yards per play. No one is that good. The New England Patriot's defensive squad wouldn't have been able to win that game for us. Yes, Clemson's D is very stout, so you have to give them credit. But, no defense in CFB should be able to hold an AU team to 1.77 yards per play. It should NEVER happen. I don't care if it's Clemson or Bama or LSU or USC or Oklahoma.

Defense is great, offense will get better, I guarantee that. (Or I will be fired).

Our offense was not ready to play at Clemson and, our coaches were either incapable or unwilling to revise their game plan. An exercise in futility.

To make a fair statistical comparison you should only look at UofL's numbers from the first half and the first series of the 2nd half. Once Clemson went up big CBV dropped into zone coverage and basically played prevent until he inserted the kids who don't get to play much with 6 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. The 3rd team kids ran normal base stuff.

Using that metric BP and Lamar managed...

28 plays for 150 yards and a touchdown. On the lone scoring drive Lamar scrambled for more than half the drive yardage using his own athletic ability to make the plays.

Without the lone scoring drive UofL ran 22 plays for 55 yards. If he hadn't scrambled for first downs it would have been 25 plays for 62 yards.

The 2nd half began with a Pick 6 followed by another 3 and out. Clemson cruised in prevent from that point forward.

UofL did much worse on offense than Auburn did, but there D's inability to contain Clemson allowed CBV to call a different type of 2nd half. He had to keep the dogs on us. IMO (Barring injuries) in ten years people will realize the ridiculous amount of talent Clemson has put together in their front 4 this season.

Thought I'd add this Gus > Petrino!
