Tray Matthews is playing out there. He is knocking the shite out of guys out there and is moving all over the field making plays. Love it..

Thank you. Dude deserves some credit. He gets so much undo shite because of the gifs of a couple plays vs LSU two years ago when he was playing injured. Both from our own fanbase, which is sad, and from oppsoing fans on the Rant that have never actually watched him besides those gifs.
In reality hes been one of our best and most consistent defenders the last two seasons, and one of the leaders of the entire team.

Tray Matthews

That may be the case but it’s no different than what we’ve been doing.

Neiko Thorpe is primarily a special teams player. He has continued to secure a roster spot because of his hustle and ability as a special teams player.

Brandon King barely stepped on the field at Auburn in the secondary. He continues to secure a roster spot with the Patriots for his special teams play.

Continuing to scream "NEIKO THORPE IS IN THE NFL" still doesn't make him a good corner...

I was joking because it's been said 50 times in this thread

I figured. I just read the thread this morning and somehow a review of current players turned into a Neiko Thorpe performance appraisal. Lol.

Ran it a bunch with Bellage (who is a monster).

I actually REALLY like the way Lindsey runs the wildcat as opposed to how Gus seemed to use it. I would definitely liked to have seen us work on some RZ passing schemes since we had that game in hand, but if it's working, you take the 6 points.

It's a bit different in that we are using a few different formations and personnel than we did previously. Basically we have both Malzahn and Lindsey's versions of the Wildcat.

I just hate the lazy criticism that Wildcat = Gus intervention. Lindsey might actually like to use the Wildcat more than Gus so it's here to stay whether we like it or not

At the rate this season is going, the only TE we'll sign this year or in the future CGM as HC are the insane ones, blind ones, or non-to-sparsely-recruited ones.

BECAUSE HE PLAYS SPECIAL TEAMS AND NOT CORNERBACK.

He has an interception and 7 passes defended in his career stats.

Hard to do that if you're only playing special teams. Unless he's coincidentally on the field only when special teams are using a fake punt.

The jet sweep from the sugar huddle was new. Stove has wheels.

We usually run a toss sweep out of that.

Also ran a play action off that toss against Clemson that was an abortion.

He started 2 games in Oakland due to injuries. And still played bad per PFF, IIRC. He’s bad at cornerback. Terrible. There’s no arguing that.

Quality special teams player.

He still played corner in the NFL.

Nic Coe deserves a shot out. He has really played well this year despite having limited experience coming into the season.

Marlon is a beast, both interior DTs are beasts and Holland has performed so much better than expected against the run.

Linebackers have been phenomenal. McBryde and Atckinson have issues with gap integrity but hopefully Steele gets that cleaned up this year.

Hard to be disappointed with the defense outside of nitpicking shite

Offense, Kam Martin needs more touches. He has been the best option out of the backfield this year imo.

Hopefully we have corrected the ball security issues

I can't express how pleasantly surprised I am at Kevin Steele thus far.

I think this board was almost unanimous in being underwhelmed (or worse) when he was hired. I know I was. But this defense looks fundamentally sound everywhere, and looks to be improving from week to week. You can't ask for more from a DC.

I'm a huge Dave Aranda fan, but it would be difficult for me to imagine our defense being significantly better at this point if we had hired him instead of Steele at the end of 2015.

Steele is a guy that clearly has learned from past mistakes and whose temperament is a perfect fit at AU. At Clemson he tried to do too much (ala Van Gorder in 2012) and it resulted in guys playing slow and overthinking. He came into AU, used basically same playbook Muschamp left and put focus on understanding their assignments and playing fast.

I don't think Steele is an elite X & Os type of guy but I do think he has mastered the keep it simple enough to execute and let your players play strategy. I also think Travis Williams has had a major impact developing linebackers and playing the best. Love how they are playing this year and am hopeful D is here to stay for awhile

feels good to finally have linebackers making an impact on the field. both williams, davis, and atkinson are playing great. mcbryde has missed some assignments, but he's also played well in reserve.

don't think i've seen an AU LB actually making a significant impact constantly since Bynes

Some great teaching moments for McBryde Saturday. I suspect he is the #2 MLB next year when Tre Williams leaves and T-WILL seemed hellbent on getting him some meaningful snaps against Mizzou. That one TD drive McBryde was the MLB in our Dime package so he was all by himself out there. Will pay off down the road

Agreed. I think Cass had his moments (honestly he was better at Buck and if had started there in 2015 probably would of had a big season) but this is clearly best LB core we have had in some time. Three true top notch guys in Deshaun DAvis, Tre Williams and Darrell Williams with Montavius Atkinson and Richard McBryde improving. Excited to see what guys like KJ Britt and Chandler Wooten look like after spending 4 years under T-WILL
