Here is the deal, if your teams suck then you should be watched more closely and have less power.

When is this principle going to be applied to JJ?

It's obviously not. He is their chosen son.

No, they got where they are by being successful and making good decisions in whatever business they are in.

NONE of the moneyed interests at AU got where they are because they were good at running athletic programs. And yet because of their power and influence (due entirely to their financial assets), they end up calling the shots in the AU Athletic Dept.

Can you honestly look at the state of AU's sports programs in general, and football in particular, and say that the power brokers must be making good decisions?

You have to earn your power just like Saban and all of the great coaches have earned. Gus could have prevented the micromanaging by not sucking - he has only himself to blame. I don't like JJ, but I am ok with JJ's decision to not give as much control to Gus.
Totally disagree with this.

The way it ought to be, IMHO, is that the people with the money hire an AD and tell him/her that he/she is responsibilt for managing the athletic programs. That person will be subject to periodic assessments of their performance, based in part on the performance of those programs, but no other interference other than allocation or denial of resources the AD requests.

Likewise, the AD is responsible for hiring head coaches for each of the programs, with the understanding that they will be in control of and responsible for every decision made regarding that program. Same criteria as far as periodic performance evaluations and allocation/denial of resources at the discretion of the AD.

Obviously, there are few major colleges that implement this approach in practice. AU seems to be worse than most, however.

Yes. And I'd honestly like to know to what level we think the interference occurs....right now, like someone said earlier, its a convenient excuse for us sucking....but after some of the stuff that has come out with the way basketball is run, not just at Auburn, but at many places....some of the conspiracy theory type stuff doesn't seem quite as far fetched....

So...to what level, or specifically what type of stuff are the powers that be meddling in?

ETA: I'll probably still think its more than likely just a popular thing to say when we suck.

If by "bucked the good ole boys" you mean avg only 7.5W from 99-02 then watch a 2003 preseason top 5 team limping into the Iron Bowl 6-5

Tuberville was fielding questions about whether he expected to keep his job. If Tuberville lost 03 Iron Bowl, he wasn't coaching in 04 and it wouldn't be controversial
