Guess you skipped over the potential shitshow of an OL.

If by shitshow, you mean one real question mark on the line then yeah I agree.

I think the word you are hearing out of camp is wrong - Kam Pettway may not be Usain Bolt but he isn't slow. Similar to Artis-Payne. Also Malik Miller has been turning some heads too

We have some big question marks at OL. How well Golson transitions to LT and Dampener at OC

Shouldn't be garbage but not up to the standard OL of the Malzahn era

We have probably our best pair of guards under Malzahn and Golson is a 2 year starter in the SEC. Dampeer is definitely a question mark and how Leff improves as a pass blocker but this is probably the strength of our offense going into the season

I think our OL is going to be just fine, but it's crazy how all over the map people are in regards to it. One publication has them a top 10 unit in the country and then our own fans think they are hot garbage.

I should clarify to say the lack of experience with the LBs worries me. Talent wise, they could be great.

I like our CBs.

Carlton Davis is obviously really really good. Javaris Davis was playing very well before the injury. Dean is supposed to be pretty good and he's listed as a OR with J Davis so I'm assuming he's doing pretty well. Then you got Holsey who hopefully is recovered from his injuries

I remember being worried about the LBs in 2004. They were smaller guys than AU had in the past. They turned out to be great though.

We also had 2 Williams at LB in 2004.

... you can't seriously believe that this year's CBs are better than 2004

How the frick did you come up with me saying that?

I didn't say anything close to that. I don't see any unit on this team that I would compare to '04

The thread earlier talked about how this team stacks up vs 2004. For some reason I though tyou meant you liked the CBs > 2004

For reference this was the OP

Besides Carols who were our other CBs in 2004? I don't remember due to years of alcohol ingestion.

You have Wil herring and Junior Rosegreen at safeties with Rogers winning the Thorpe on one side. Not sure who started on the other side but David Irons was around in 2004

2004 Auburn was one of the most talented teams of that entire decade. 2001 Miami is the most talented of all-time IMO, but 04 AU has a real argument for 2nd most talented of that decade behind them.

People talk about that years USC team in that manner, and say how they would beat Auburn because of how loaded they were... But if you go back and look at the two rosters in retrospective, Auburn is the more talented team. Auburn had more NFL players and better NFL players come off the 2004 team than USC did.

I've done a position by position breakdown of the two teams before on here. For the most part the starters were close in talent. Linebacker is the only position group where USC could claim any real advantage. Had Dontarrious Thomas came back for his senior year, or Will Herring dropped down to LB it would have flipped in Auburn's favor though. Every other position either had an advantage to Auburn or was objectively equal.

Where Auburn had a significant advantage was in the trenches and on the benches. Auburn was significantly better on both sides of the line, and in terms of quality depth USC wasn't close to Auburn.

Where USC held the biggest advantage was in coaching and playing style. USC had a very high scoring style of offense, while Tuberville was overly conservative and liked to sit on leads. I think it's very likely that would have cost us the game against a team with offensive weapons like USC. Auburn's best chance would've been to come out and shell shock USC physically. USC didn't play a team with a defense in the same league as ours that year, and they also didn't play an offense with the overall firepower we had.
