I'm usually not one to be a sunshine pumper, but I actually like this hire. He was part of some great teams at Nebraska under Tom Osborne, coaching a Thorpe award winner there, did a great job st Florida State coaching their linebackers under Bowden, then helped turn Alabama's defense around under Saban, and was hired not once, but twice by Saban, who said that there aren't many better coaches than Steele. His defenses at Clemson were pretty solid except for his last year there and he did well at LSU despite playing a lot of young talent. They held the #2 defense to 27 points, which was 20 below their average, in the bowl game. He's one of the best recruiters in the country and is good friends with Lance Thompson, which can only help. He's not the best coach we could have hired, but he's still a solid coach with a lot of experience.

Please give DyeHardDylan is account back ASAP. I'm sure he's a mess without it. Thanks!

Same. I would rather not pay the money we probably are, but meh. If he keeps Lance I think it could work out for the better.

So Steele is making the most financially savvy move ever. By having a 3 yr deal at AU he will vest in retirement based on his DC salary. His retirement will be ~$120,000/yr max from the state

That is a near $60,000 increase over what it would be if he was vested (he isn't) and basing it on his Alabama coaching salaries

That money is state income tax exempt and Medicare/SS exempt too

You do know the state of Alabama is not paying him ~1.2 million per year, right? His salary from the school is probably in the 80k per year range. At best, his retirement from AL will be 60k. It I not the reason he can back.

I am now over it.

Hoping he is great and we rebound.

At least watching A&M eases the pain.

Didn't think about that. Good call. I also looked it up and be is far from 10 years in the state. He only has lime 5

Supposedly Lance Thompsons decision is big on retirement though but he is close to the threshold for

I don't think he fit in, and next year is probably Les' last.

My mom is retiring from the state of AL in the spring... she was telling me you'd have to spend ten consecutive years before becoming vested. Or you could buy back in (with interest).

Who knows what, if any real benefit Steele would be getting

I'm sure part of his deal is us buying him credits.

My wife is in it. It's not that great. At 10 years, you are "vested." Meaning you don't lose the money paid in your name. At 20 years you can retire at 50% of your salary. You can cash out if you quit before 20 years. You would be better off investing your money in a mutual fund, which is what these coaches are doing making that much cash. His returns are a lot higher than any monthly payment he would get from the TRS. It played no part in him coming here.

I think that he probably just wanted out at LSU. He may not have fit in down there and none of those defensive coach's down there owed him anything.(loyalty). He wasn't familiar with any of them. He has coached with LT before and may be comfortable with him.

I believe that someone said that he got a three year contract with us and he had only one left on his contract at LSU. Les's stability isn't any better than Malzahn's.

It depends on what tier you are in the retirement. He is a tier one employee and can get full benefits after ten years and the age of 60. It will be based on the average of his last ten years of employment.

Tier 2 employees which is employed after January 2013 it requires 25 years.

That is why it is a bigger deal than most think.

You idiots think a guy making what he makes and has made just made a decision based on a retirement payout?

I think it probably had a lot to do with the fact that he never quite fit in at LSU and wasn't really allowed to bring in his own defensive staff. At Auburn, he's coaching with Lance Thompson, who he's known and coached with for several years, and he gets to bring in his own DB coach.
