They also had 4 losses to RPI 200+ teams and had a losing record versus RPI 101-200 teams. Both of those are considered pretty bad. Their overall RPI is 152. They will have to pick things up before playing them in B'Ham would be a quality game. Also, with Pearl at AU I think it will be harder for UAB to get the local star to rejuvinate them. I would personally wait to see them improve before scheduling them.

Exactly. They've had back-to-back losing seasons and haven't been the same quality of team since Mike Anderson or Mike Davis left.

We've made a commitment to being a quality basketball team with a new arena and one of the best coaches in the country. Time to stop playing these weak teams, in-state or not.

Because it's Birmingham, he doesn't recruit there. Just gives a chance for Pearl to play in Memphis.

I was not saying a home and home but I see your point. If Memphis does not recruit Birmingham then there is no reason to play in B'ham.

Playing UAB in Birmingham is a win-win for both schools. It gives UAB a little more exposure and gives the Birmingham area recruits a chance to see us up close and a chance for us to go around to some of the local high schools during the middle of the season.

I'm all for playing in Birmingham, just not UAB right now. If we are going to play a neutral site game in The Ham it needs to be with a better quality opponent. Playing UAB there until they get better is a waste of a neutral site and chance to get a quality RPI neutral game. I'm also for playing UAB now but only at home for the reason stated above. When UAB gets better I'm all for playing them in the BJCC or wherever B'Ham basketball is played now.

We'll still play some weak teams. Even when Peal had the Vols in the top 10 in non con SOS 5 times they played an average of 4.5 teams with an RPI of 150 or lower each year.

I never said they were the best in the country, I said they would be a good OOC opponent, and they would be.

I think someone has not been watching basketball....UAB was 16-17 in 2013, 18-13 in 2014.
So...yeah.

I'm with you. I really enjoyed playing UAB every year and think it would be good for the program to start that series back up.

I would love to open the series back up just because it would be a decent draw. Would be a good game OOC to sprinkle in with some big dogs

there is no reason not to play UAB... it's not like football... if anything, they can legitimize our program by stooping to our level...

I'd play UAB but I don't want that game at Bartow. I'd play at the BJCC.

We should have a 3 game round robin in Montgomery of UAB, Bama and AU and call some trendy name with "Alabama" in it.

Make basketball something more than "basketball iron bowl" and give it it's own identity

Bama wouldn't play in that.

Here's what Pearl said, not sure if posted already

Q: In your mind, is there a benefit to play in-state teams out of conference?

"At Tennessee, I played Middle Tennessee. I played Tennessee-Chattanooga. I played East Tennessee State. I played Belmont. I played Lipscomb. I think playing in-state helps build the quality of basketball in the state. I think it's what the fans enjoy and I'm going to play some mid-majors, but UAB is not a mid-major. UAB is what I consider a high mid-major program in a high mid-major league. ... Their RPI will be important. Why did I play Belmont? Because Belmont played a tough nonconferece schedule. If there's an in-state school that wants to play but plays a weak schedule, I can't play them because of what it will do to our RPI."

Had no idea Haase was coaching, much less at UAB.

I'd place money that Barbee didn't even know what RPI meant.

I'll take that bet. I heard he has been trying to schedule Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as our marquee OOC game for years
