or he could get hurt and make no money

Right, it's a gamble but if he leaves this year it's not going to be to "make millions".
If he stays and stays healthy and produces like he likely would he will go in the top two rounds next year and sign a big contract.
If he leaves now he'll make a couple hundred thousand for three or four years and have to stay healthy and produce in the NFL and then sign a big FA contract to make his big money.
Like I said if he just wants to guarantee some money playing football he should go, if he wants the best chance at big money he should stay.

Not to make millions but if he stays healthy he would get there in 2-3 years anyway.

Exactly but by coming back he would only have to stay healthy one year if he leaves he has to stay healthy for 3 years and also produce in a more difficult environment.

I don't see Lawson declaring until around the deadline/when we have a DC.
With his injury history Lawson would need to have a Nick Fairley quality year to be a RD1 pick. The biggest difference between RD3 and RD6+/UDFA is guaranteed money and likelihood to make roster.

Nobody has guaranteed money outside of the first round.

Yes they do. It is a major reason why players drafted 2-3 normally play out the contract when they aren't good. Even if a RD6 is slightly better, he has to be $200k/yr in dead money better
RD 2 guaranteed money ranged from $1.15mil-$3.89mil
RD 3 guaranteed money ranged from $550k-$808k
RD 4 guaranteed money ranged from $345k-$545k

Only the first 19 had fully guranteed contracts and if you notice, the numbers dropped a ton going into the second round. Third rounders only have maybe 250,000 "guranteed."

Carl Lawson reportedly headed to the @NFL.
Good kid. He's definitely "flashed" at times.
But, if true, what will we be missing that we haven't already been missing for almost 2 years now?
Also, if true, best of luck to the kid.

If he came back, he could always take out insurance so that he would still get paid… Just wouldn't have the NFL experience

I don't know how that insurance works for an oft injured guy like himself. The insurance must be expensive lol.

Can't schools purchase insurance for the kids? Or help with it? I think I've read that, but don't hold me to it.

Most of the times the University does pay the insurance for those players returning

However the guaranteed is also considered the signing bonus.
This is a massive deal if you aren't sure making it to a second contract/improves odds of completing a contract
Signing bonus $ Salary cap hit is amortized over the contract. Teams that have committed $250k/yr per say late RD2 are more willing to cut a RD7 guy of equal ability due to having no future cap obligations.
Thats why even "bust" RD2-3 guys will make it four years on the bench. In the grand scheme of things though if you llay out avg 2nd year contract your career earnings difference from lateRD2 and RD7 is ~$1.5 mil <10% total earnings
Assume ~$2.5mil/yr avg DE (pretty low)

Minimum salary is 450,000.00 for a rookie or year 0
The minimum salary increases for a player for each year he is on the active roster.
1 Year 550
2 Year 600

Players has to have a draft grade of RD1-3 and it only covers disabling injury that prevents player from playing professionally. It doesn't protect against potential lost wages
For example, say a potential RD1 player with an extensive injury history tears his ACL and causes him to fall to RD 5, player does notreceive any compensation

That is base salary. Players who receive signing bonus affect salary cap (Base Salary + Signing Bonus avg)
If say Randy Gregory got cut today, the Cowboys salary cap would still count ~$250k for the rest of his contract even when he isn't on the roster (~$1mil signing bonus / 4 years)

I tried buying insurance for if I couldn't make the NFL last winter. The agent felt it probably wasn't a good idea when I ran a 9.2 40 in his parking lot.
