IIRC, there was a fight between lee ziemba and a DL (believe it was Antonio Coleman) during preseason practices

Which led to a broken neck. Ziemba body slammed Coleman.

Also, not to pull "insider" bullshite, but Hugh Nall completely disagreed with pretty much everything Tony Franklin had to say. I was at Tony Franklin's coaching clinic in January of 2008, and Hall was in attendance. After one of the sessions, Nall was rather vocal with some coaches about how Franklin's philosophy on offensive lines would never work in the SEC and that Franklin would have to adapt his system.

There's also the story that right before Franklin was fired, he took over the entire offensive practice and coached every position while not allowing the position coaches to have much say.

That offense was one of the worst clustershits in football history, and the 2008 defense is probably one of the most underrated defenses of all time.

If I remember correctly they had some injury problems (Tray Blackmon and Jerraud Powers) and had some young guys step up.

Agree with the first, disagree with the second.

Posted this in another thread: AU's offense in '08 was ranked #112 out of 120 FBS teams in total offense. Our defense got to face #114, #116, and #118, plus FCS UT-Martin (who managed to score exactly as many points as JSU did this year). West Virginia, Arky, and Bama all performed well above their season averages for yards and points. Our only decent performance against a team with a pulse offensively was against UGa.

We were pretty average defensively in '08. That season was only impressive in comparison to every year since.
