I think it's fairly clear we have serious personnel issues on defense and I don't think that one bad season at Auburn means a historically good coach now sucks.

My biggest concern is "What if BVG can't adapt to the Spread?"
Monte Kiffin was a damn good NFL DC, and he's struggled adjusting to defending the Spread at the College level.
No doubt, against a Pro-Style Offense, BVG is great (see: LSU game this year) but in games where we've gone up against a Spread-Based team, it's been real bad.

UGAy is vanilla as they come. And he struggled against them.

Replace Bates with Frost

The lack of personnel in no way justifies the loss to Georgia or the loss to A&M. I'm ready for a new head coach and I'm ready to turn said headcoach loose to hire who he sees fit.

Since when did this become an argument about the HC? We were talking personnel and the DC.
Posted on 11/11/12 at 2:15 pm to Rig
Yeah but the DC was talking about the HC at the end of that interview, no?

1) I was countering Aubie Spr96's comments about our LBs not being undersized.
2) He was talking about the DC being a problem.
3) Not talking about the interview.
So, no.

Bates is doing fine, leading tackler on the team if I'm not mistaken, with our only INT. The problem is the other side, it's been a revolving door of ineptitude with Justin Garrett and Jonathan Evans. If you want to see where the real problem lies though it's on the defensive line. Defensive tackles not getting any push and not stopping the run, they don't even try to stop a run up the middle they just move 5 yards out of the way.

To quote the captain, even the worst football team in college has a leading tackler.

Sure, but Bates is leading tackling at the LB position. Which is great because if he sucked the DB's would be reeling in more tackles like they have the past few years. I'm not saying he's great or anything but he is certainly not the problem. Find someone else to pick on.

I don't think it's fair to judge any assistant's coaching under Chizik's reign. Any person's boss will have a direct influence on how that employee performs. There's no way to know how much is the assistant and how much is Chizik's incompetent meddling.
Roof, Gus, BVG, Yox, these guys have had varying degrees of success when Chizik wasn't their boss.
The only thing I think you can blame them for is their decision to come work under Chizik. How did BVG not know what he was walking into? How did he not figure out Chizik is a moron during his interview(s)?

Not gonna argue with you because Bates is an average OLB. As I stated before, our Dline play, with our slow, small LBers give us trouble against good teams.
Posted on 11/11/12 at 5:40 pm to AUCE05
BVG with Rocker coaching the d-line would get results I think.
Posted on 11/11/12 at 6:29 pm to AUCE05
We are so under sized and under conditioned, it's pathetic.

Now I obviously haven't included their 40 times, but given who was recruiting these kids, I'll assume they have SEC caliber speed.
Found your problem. Our guys are small and slow. No way Holland or Evans has SEC speed. Hell Evans is only at AU because his brother played here.
Ask yourself this, would any SEC team want to trade LBer corps with us right now?

well when our safties play LB, our LBs play DE, what can you expect. Bates, Owens, Sanders, etc. Half of our defense is out of position.
Tuberville made a career out of doing that...difference is Tubby is a tough muthafricka, so he's defenses werent pussy...
We had Travis Williams, Anterrious Williams, and Tray Blackmon starting at LB, neither weighed more than 215...and they played with leverage and would knock your arse out...
Truth is, the guys we have on D now are just some big bitches. Period. No fight. Mentally and physically weak is the assessment of them. Heath Evans was dead on.
