Broader question - is this why you don't hire offensive minded HC?

Think about it.

You get what you hire. If it blows up, the head coach won't change because it's his system.

Then the talk of well why is he your coach if you don't want to run his style.

To me, get a defense style coach and hire a good OC. If the offense sucks, then actual change can take place.

Thoughts?

But what we have seen the last two years IS NOT "his system." His "system" was the HUNH offense with heavy run and read option QB runs. He wanted to show the pundits he could win without doing what made us so successful and it has blown up.

I see what you are saying and I don't disagree but if he would truly get out of the way and get a GOOD OC, NOT a YES MAN we would be fine. It will never happen sadly. Dude is insane and stubborn. You can literally tell by his looks he is crazy. Don't blame the good coaches that have bailed on him one bit.

I remember the frustration with Tuberville.

Defense was always good.

With a good OC the offense was good. Like Petrieno.

But then they get hired away and the offense sucks for years.

Some logic to that.

Bear Bryant, Pat Dye, Tubberville, Saban, Les Miles, etc. are all examples of successful HC who were primarily focused on the defense.

Steve Spurrier is an outlier that had prolonged success but was mostly focused on the offense. Maybe Dabo Swinney getting there.

All things being equal, you're probably right...a defensive-focused HC is probably better.

I agree. Head coaches that run their own offense and actually make it work are extremely rare. People like Spurrier and Briles are the exception.

I think defenses are better than they've ever been in CFB. No offense really works for long nowadays. It's becoming more like the NFL in that regard.

I would rather have a HC who had a solid DC record and who understands the offensive style he wants. Then he goes out and hires the best available OC to get it done.

Indeed, watching Saban at bammer, I am convinced that football knowledge itself isn't what makes a successful HC. What makes a HC is choosing your player$ and how you run the organization (process). Attention to detail and being a malevolent dictator is what works. Saban doesn't win because he has better X's and O's. He wins because he has better players than you and does all the little things off the field to make them the best they can be.

Having said that, is Dave Aranda our best option?
