STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Eagles will travel to legendary Head Coach Erk Russell's alma mater, the Auburn Tigers, to open the 2017 football season.
The Eagles will now face an SEC team in three consecutive years starting with Georgia in 2015, Ole Miss in 2016 and the Tigers on Sept. 2, 2017.
Auburn finished 19th in the final 2014 College Football Playoff Rankings after an 8-4 regular season and a 4-4 mark in the SEC. The Tigers fell to 8-5 on the year dropping the Outback Bowl 34-31 to Wisconsin in overtime.
"Playing Auburn provides us a great opportunity to play on a national stage and gives our fans an opportunity to travel to a close non-conference game to watch us play," Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein said.
Georgia Southern will also travel to UMass during the 2017 season in the first game of a home-and-home series against the Minutemen. UMass will return the trip to Statesboro in 2018.
The Eagles also announced that the LSU game scheduled for 2017 has been pushed back to 2019.

Game 1 is the best time to play them IMO. Their triple option is as good as any team in the nation who runs it. We will have a good bit of time to prepare for it.

I will be honest, I am of the mindset now I wish we would play tougher OOC's. I know it may not be a reasonable position in regards to us getting through the maze each year, but that is how I am feeling as of late.

They very nearly (should have) beat an Orange Bowl team Tech last year. Of course, their defense was prepared for GT's triple option.
Still a scary game.
Still a scary game.

Boom wanted another shot at'em.

You beat Georgia southern by getting ahead early and torching their secondary. Hopefully our offense will still be elite then.

Y'all may disagree but look at it this way. Ga.Southern was arguably one of the better mid major teams in the nation last year. It was their 1st year in D1 which had them on probation status otherwise they win the Sun Belt being undefeated in the conference. Nearly every Power 5 team plays 2-3 mid majors a year. That's not changing w/out some kind of rule change or seperate levels for the Power 5 & mid major conferences. In terms of SOS playing them is quite a bit less damaging than most mid majors other Power 5 teams will play. Now if we lose that will be horendous no doubt.

This is one reason we should play 9 conference games

I dont' like it. When uga plays them, they do it the week before they play georgia tech so it makes logistical sense for them. They get a week to prepare for the offense with a not as talented team, then are prepared when they play the same offense in a more talented team.
In our case, I agree it's better to not play them in the middle of the year where you're regular planning, then TO planning, then back to regular. But fact is having the whole summer to prepare isn't really a benefit. We play @clemson in week 2...if we played a normal cupcake, we could/would devote a lot more time to the clemson game, as we should. With opening with southern we can't do that, and will have to legitimately game plan hard for them. True we have longer than one week, which is a plus, but any time you have a tough game in week 2, it's always nice to have a gimme in week 1. Which this game is not.

They got arse-pounded by Navy last year. Won by 3 against Texas State.
The year before they lost to Wofford, Samford, & Furman.

Frikkin THIS. And my youngest daughter will be a senior at Ga. Southern in 2017. We went to the Ga Tech GSU game in Atlanta last year and While Tech moved the ball with impunity up to half time, Southern came back and damn near won the game at the end. Tech scored with 35 secs left to win.
AU will win , but see no real value in this kind of game.
Of course we could do like Bama and schedule Ga State!

I mean, you guys know we are going to play a sun belt level team. I'd rather it be Georgia Southern who Auburn has connections with, or in state Troy or USA than some directional Louisiana school or fricking Arkansas State again or somebody from across the country like Utah State.
You guys complain about scheduling a weak opponent, but everybody does it and if we only scheduled P5 teams ya'll would complain about the schedule being too hard. Look at it this way, Georgia Southern is enough of a challenge to keep the team from sleep walking, but shouldn't be too much of a challenge to wear us down for a real opponent.
For this level of game that you know we will always have, I like it.

Perfect game for White to get in a groove and gain some very valuable game experience before getting into the schedule
