Other takeaways from Auburn’s recruiting weekend
Aside from Webb, it wasn’t the most exciting game from a recruiting standpoint. Only one 2018 target was scheduled to make an appearance. That was Minnesota cornerback commit Terell Smith, but he didn’t make the trip. There were a few other quick-hitter items worth mentioning, so I’ll deliver those in bullet-point form below.
With Georgia Southern and Mercer out of the way, the rest of Auburn’s home schedule will be fairly strong for recruiting purposes. I’d expect there to be some official visitors for the Mississippi State game in two weeks.
Here are the high points from this weekend:

Keiondre Jones is one of the top offensive linemen in the 2019 class. He isn’t doing interviews during the season, a move a lot of kids are starting to make unfortunately, so there isn’t anything major to report. He did get some personal time with Herb Hand and Gus Malzahn prior to the game. Jones was right at the 50-yard line for most of Auburn’s pregame warmups, as he tried to get a front-and-center look at how things operate. I’ll make sure to catch up with Jones the second his season is over. For now, Auburn is doing as best it can with him despite some shaky offensive line performances.

Gus Malzahn likes to bring Auburn commits to midfield prior to games for two reasons. One is to show them off to everyone else, and the second reason is to give an incentive to players to commit to Auburn by giving them a special pregame experience. He spent an extended period with Kolbi Fuqua, Josh Marsh and Kameron Stutts before the game.

Asa Martin and Chip Lindsey have a strong relationship, a big reason why Martin committed in the first place. They chatted for a while pregame, much longer than most coaches talk to recruits when they’re preparing for their own football game. Martin also told me he still feels confident that the Tigers will land his close friend Coynis Miller.

Former Ohio State quarterback Torrance Gibson, who is now at Mississippi Gulf Coast, attended the game with Auburn commit Daquan Newkirk. For now, don’t consider Gibson a target for the Tigers, but if Auburn misses on Justin Fields, it could potentially turn to another quarterback. Could Gibson be an option? Too early to tell, but at this time, no.

Alabama commit Quay Walker stayed overnight in Auburn on Saturday. He was in Tuscaloosa for the Alabama game during the day and stopped by for the night on his way back to Cordele, Ga. There isn’t much more to report than that, but it’s certainly worth mentioning.

Major Auburn target Richard Jibunor offered rave reviews for his experience at the Florida-Tennessee game, which ended in dramatic fashion. He says he’ll visit Florida again, but I’ll be interested to see if that’s actually true. Jibunor would like to have a decision made in the near future.

Last, but certainly not least: 5-star quarterback Justin Fields, the night after rocking an Auburn undershirt at his game, visited Georgia with his entire family. He’s expected to be on campus again this weekend for an official visit when Georgia plays Mississippi State. Maybe my confidence will jump for Auburn if/when Fields takes an official visit to the Plains. Until then, I remain to like Georgia’s chances.

I was critical of us targeting Asa, in part because one of my buddy's friends up in Decatur coaches at Austin and said that he didn't have a great work ethic and was not the ideal teammate.
HOWEVER, my friend emailed me yesterday and his coach said that he's like a different kid since coming back from IMG. Said that his vision is better, he's working hard, engaged and puts max effort on the field every play now. Still said that he needs to get stronger, but a college S&C program like Auburn will do that in no time.

Ranking Alabama’s top 15 prospects in the 2018 class (SECCountry)
quote:
The state of Alabama will have a healthy list of football players signing with Division I programs in the 2018 class. With that in mind, SEC Country will be ranking the Yellowhammer State’s top 15 recruits for the class.
These rankings will be released once a month throughout the football season. The list is based on evaluation by SEC Country reporters, recruiting interest from the two in-state programs, other offers, stats and ratings from the main recruiting outlets (247Sports, ESPN, Rivals and Scout). The star ratings below come from the 247Sports composite.
Here are SEC Country’s top 15 prospects in Alabama for 2018:

quote:
15. Cam Taylor, 3-star athlete, Park Crossing — committed to Missouri
Cam Taylor plays quarterback for Park Crossing but will play in the secondary at Missouri. He’s coming off a torn right ACL, but already has made a full recovery and is expected to lead a very good Park Crossing team this fall.

quote:
14. James Foster, 3-star quarterback, Lanier — committed to Missouri
James Foster has the ability to play more than just quarterback. That’s what Alabama and Auburn both looked at him to do. But Foster wants to be a quarterback, and Missouri wanted him to be the face of its recruiting class, which is why he chose those Tigers. Foster performed at a high level throughout the summer in 7-on-7 tournaments. Expect to see him to shine even brighter during his senior season.

13. Tank Jenkins, 4-star guard, Park Crossing — uncommitted
Tank Jenkins had a very good offseason. SEC Country saw Jenkins compete in several camps this spring and summer, where he was one of the top overall linemen at each event. He needed to lose some weight, which he did, and it’s made a big difference. Louisville and Missouri are the main contenders for Jenkins.

12. Kameron Stutts, 3-star offensive lineman, Brooks — committed to Auburn
At 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, Kameron Stutts surprises with his athleticism and agility. He’s a state champion in the shot put and was close to medaling in the discus, as well. Stutts committed to Auburn at the Tigers’ spring game, which was a clear sign of where the big offensive lineman sits on Auburn’s board. On top of his physical skill set, Stutts has a spirit about him that’s impossible to ignore. It’s a big reason why many college coaches were eager to get him.

11. Myles Mason, 4-star safety, Hewitt-Trussville — uncommitted
Myles Mason’s recruitment has been somewhat of a question mark for the past several months. It’s unclear which of his top schools he can commit to at the moment. Alabama, the school he likely wants to pick, is still evaluating him, as is Florida State. With him being at Hewitt-Trussville now, one of the top football teams in the state, Mason will have a lot of eyes on him this fall.
Posted on 9/19/17 at 8:42 am to TigerPaw1
quote:
10. Jalen Cunningham, 3-star defensive tackle, Saint Clair County — uncommitted
Jalen Cunningham hasn’t had the best coaching in his high school career. That has changed with Matt Glover now there. Since Glover was hired in late February, Cunningham’s recruitment has taken off. Like Mason above, it’s unclear where he can actually commit. Alabama is still evaluating him and wants to see how he plays after he recovers from a turf toe injury. If the Crimson Tide want him, he’ll commit to Bama. Though Cunningham is 6-foot-6 and over 340 pounds, he carries his weight very well. With proper coaching, we believe Cunningham could be a force in the SEC.

quote:
9. Shedrick Jackson, 3-star wide receiver, Hoover — committed to Auburn
Despite sitting out a game, Jackson has shown early on in the 2017 season that he’s much more than just Bo Jackson’s nephew. He has posted two 100-yard outings in three games and is averaging a touchdown per game. Jackson moved up two spots on this list, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jackson make a few jumps in some of the other recruiting service rankings, as well.

quote:
8. Andres Fox, 3-star defensive end, Mobile Christian — uncommitted
Andres Fox is on the wish list for Alabama, LSU, Auburn and Stanford, so that gives a good idea of his skill set. He has a solid combination of strength and agility, which is why he ranges from a Buck target to a defensive tackle target. All four of those programs have specific plans in place to utilize Fox in their schemes. He will be a standout for Mobile Christian this fall and show exactly why.

quote:
7. Jack West, 4-star quarterback, Saraland — committed to Stanford
Jack West is one of the most intelligent recruits SEC Country has interacted with. The 6-foot-4 pro-style QB possesses a 4.0 GPA and desires to be president one day. He will not wow you with his athleticism, but he makes up for it with a quick, compact delivery and good instincts.
Posted on 9/19/17 at 8:43 am to TigerPaw1
quote:
6. Harold Joiner, 4-star running back, Mountain Brook — uncommitted
Harold Joiner’s college decision hasn’t been as obvious. But when it comes to his play on the field, it’s clear Joiner is one of the best athletes in the country. Is he a running back? Is he a wide receiver? Those questions haven’t been answered yet, but there’s no doubt Joiner will be a difficult asset to defend for whichever program he chooses. This is a guy who is as fast as anyone and can do cartwheels and backflips across an entire football field — all while standing 6-foot-3.
