Top RB target Master Teague III keeps Auburn near top after second straight successful visit (SECCountry)
quote:

Top RB target returns and enjoys

For the second time in as many months, Master Teague has been on the Plains.

The 4-star running back from Murfreesboro, Tenn., first visited Feb. 22. He returned Saturday for a more personal visit with Auburn coaches. Teague lacked much doubt about the Tigers leading up to the visit, but any that lingered vanished over the weekend, which included a Friday trip to Tuscaloosa.

“It was a great visit (to Auburn), talking with coaches and everything,” Teague said. “I got to see a short practice and a scrimmage. That was great. You know, a lot of questions were answered. This was a good visit.”

What were those answers he received? More education specifics to Auburn and his mother’s approval.

“We didn’t get to see the academics last time. We cleared up some questions with that. My mom got to come this time, so she got to see everything. So it was a great visit. I got most of my questions answered.”

Teague’s decision isn’t far off.

He’d like to announce as soon as July. There still are several visits he has to make, including a few more lined up within the week. Teague will visit Ohio State and Georgia for spring practices this week.

South Carolina and Tennessee also are heavily in the mix. In fact, Teague said the home-state Volunteers are recruiting him the hardest, using six coaches to recruit him.

Auburn RB coach Tim Horton (Hal Yeager/Getty Images)
Teague isn’t in a position to reveal a list of favorites. He wants to continue evaluating each program.

With that said, Auburn will be a contender. He hopes to return for Big Cat Weekend.

“I’d say they’re one of them that stand out … They’re a school that I’m looking forward to keeping research and keep looking for,” Teague said. “You know, it’s real similar to my offense. I feel like it would be a real comfortable move if I came here, as far as that goes.”

Teague’s relationship with noted running back developer Tim Horton will be a key recruiting pitch for the 5-foot-11, 210-pound back.

“He’s a great man. He’s real passionate about what he does. He seems like a good Christian man. I’m trying to build on what my parents taught me. I like the way he coaches. I think he’s a great coach,” Teague said. “I think that’s important because he has experience working with tailbacks who are great. He knows how to develop those type of guys. That’s a great thing.”

Really hope we can get him back for Big Cat Weekend

Cal grad transfer recap

SEC Country’s Justin Ferguson penned an official visit recap Sunday on Cal graduate transfer Aaron Cochran. It’s a fascinating interview.

Cochran goes in depth on his purpose to transfer from a program he loves dearly. The 6-foot-8, 350-pound offensive lineman started 16 games for Cal, so he immediately brings Power 5 experience and knowledge to any program. The other schools besides Auburn in contention are Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

The two obvious questions: 1) Why Auburn? 2) Will he play?

To answer the first, Cochran has Alabama connections from his youth in Birmingham. He still has family in the state.

The second question is tougher to discern. Auburn has depth at the position, but there never is too much depth on an offensive line. Cochran mentioned discussion of a circulation on the offensive line, but he made one thing very clear.

“(Auburn would) probably try to move some guys around that they think could be better at other positions,” Cochran said. “Give them a little bit more flexibility across the line, some time for some younger people to develop and just have an impact right away.

“As a graduate transfer, I’ve only got six months. If I come in for six months and don’t get to play, then it was a waste.”

Heavy dose of Auburn at the Opening

It was a doozie Sunday in Atlanta.

The Atlanta Opening was loaded with skill players, yet several under-the-radar prospects ended up singing in the star-heavy clinic. Auburn targets, in particular, had a special day at Buford High School when it came to SPARQ ratings, Opening invites and overall performances.

Three front-and-center Auburn targets won MVP honors at the camps: Bo Nix, Richard Jibunor and Channing Tindall.

Nix became the first underclassmen to win a quarterback position MVP, and he did so over the likes of Ohio State commit Emory Jones and 2020 phenom Harrison Bailey. The son of former Auburn standout Patrick Nix pulled out the top QB honors despite his 2019 standing.

Jibunor proved again to be a camp superstar. He’s as competitive in nature as any other prospect at a camp. The Nigerian native is wanted by many — Travis Williams especially — as a linebacker. But the blossoming football player showed Sunday he can be a gem as a pass-rushing defensive end, as well, which is why Rodney Garner is also among those chasing Jibunor, who won defensive line MVP honors over guys like Brenton Cox, Tru Thompason and Jalen Cunningham.

Tindall visited Auburn for junior day, but has prioritized other schools (for now) because of his lesser familiarity with the Tigers. He hopes and expects that to change. Tindall showed Sunday to be one of the shiniest of stars in an impressive camp. He earned top SPARQ rating honors, linebacker MVP and an Opening invite.

Recruiting-wise: There was plenty more from the Opening. Keep your eyes peeled later in the day for a scoop recap from SEC Country interviews in Atlanta, along with a photo gallery of key Auburn targets. The Tigers had a large footprint at Buford High School on Sunday.

I'm giving up on trying to track all visitors and instead leaving the 2nd post as a place for just the big weekend such as junior days, BCW, A-Day, War Damn BBQ and then when season comes games

KN has update on 4* WR Marquez Ezzard. Says loves it at AU and they are recruiting him real hard. This was his 4th visit and spent a lot of time with Kodi Burns who showed him all the different ways they could use him. Ezzard says he is close with Burns and the two talk often. Many think UGA is the team in the lead but Ezzard says no team is a clear leader right now. Plans to return over the summer. He also wants to land at same school as 4* DE Brenton Cox

KN also has article up on 4* ATH Nathaniel Watson. Watson says WR is his favorite position and that's where he has worked out at camps recently. However AU is recruiting him as a LB/S and apparently he is cool with that calling us his leader right now. Really likes Steele who told him he fits well at the "money" spot which is the name of our LB/S hybrid role (think Montavius Atkinson). The next group after AU is the Mississippi schools. He mentioned wanting offers from Oregon & Clemson. Plans to go to A-Day

In-state standouts Coynis Miller, Asa Martin update recruitment (AL.com)
quote:

Austin four-star running back Asa Martin says communication has picked up from Auburn since they offered in February.

So much that the early enrollee may make his commitment before the season instead of after, as he alluded to last month.

"They told me to stay in-state and come join the family and help recruit," Martin said Sunday at the Atlanta Opening Regional. "Auburn's right up in the top (group with me), it's at home and in the state."

The 6-foot,195-pound Martin wants to visit Michigan soon. He also said Nebraska is coming on lately.

He said he's hearing from Auburn assistants Chip Lindsey, Tim Horton and Herb Hand frequently, and is planning to visit Auburn for its spring game on April 8.

Jackson-Olin standout in Auburn now

Coynis Miller, a four-star defensive lineman from Birmingham's Jackson-Olin, left Sunday for Auburn. He'll be there until Wednesday. He said his teammate, Auburn signee T.D. Moultry, was already there.

"Just being around the coaches, building a relationship with Coach (Rodney Garner)and the rest of the coaches," Miller said about the trip. "We talk a little bit more on the phone now. We're just building a relationship."

Miller will be at Alabama on Thursday. He said offensive line coach Brent Key has taken over his recruitment after Mario Cristobal left for Oregon.

It wasn't exactly a smooth transition, but Miller said everything is fine now.

"For a minute, I didn't hear from them for a week or two," Miller said. "Coach Key came in and has been talking to me ever since. It did (bother me), until I found out what happened (Cristobal left). It's all right now."

Miller said he's wide open. LSU is heavily in the mix, and he's hoping to get to Florida and Clemson.

Other in-state recruiting notes

** Pinson Valley quarterback Bo Nix, the 2019 standout who won quarterback MVP honors at the Opening Regional in Atlanta, received an offer from Clemson while on a visit Monday. He is at Alabama today and Auburn Thursday. Those schools, plus the likes of Georgia and Ohio State, have extended offers.

Top in-state defensive lineman Coynis Miller impressed with Rodney Garner during first Auburn practice (SECCountry)
quote:

Coynis Miller has been to Auburn more than any other program.

Yet, until Tuesday, the top defensive tackle target had never consumed a Tigers’ practice. That was something Miller — already high on Auburn — wanted to see to help re-affirm any positive feelings he had about the Tigers.

Miller, joined by Auburn signee and high school teammate Tadarian Moultry, arrived at Auburn on Sunday night and will leave early Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, he took in his first Auburn practice.

“I really wanted to see them practice. This is my first one, and I liked it. The players really got after it, and the coaches were really getting after them,” Miller told SEC Country.

Miller was impressed by the work of versatile defensive lineman Derrick Brown who he has spent time with during his three-day trip. Miller, now at 6-foot-3 and 297 pounds, sees a little bit of himself in Brown when it comes to strength and athleticism.

What struck Miller most during Auburn’s practice, however, was what sticks out to most defensive linemen at their first practice: Rodney Garner’s tenacity.

“Coach G, he’s a great coach. He’ll push you hard and make sure you do everything right. I liked seeing that,” Miller said. “It’s good. It pushes players to be better. He’d push me to where I want to be, and that’d be really good for me.”

When Miller leaves Auburn on Wednesday, he’ll return to Birmingham before making a Thursday trip to Tuscaloosa to take in his first Alabama practice, as well. Unlike the Auburn visit, Miller will only be in Tuscaloosa for the day.

Those two schools — with the efforts of DL coaches Rodney Garner and Brent Key — have been at the forefront of the in-state lineman’s recruitment. They will both undoubtedly be in it until the end, which will likely be after Miller’s senior season at Jackson-Olin.

“Auburn’s just recruiting me hard. They want me to be a player here. I’m trying to find out if this is where I want to be. Coach Garner and I talk a good bit,” Miller said. “Alabama really wants me. They’re showing high interest. Coach Key, if he’s not calling, he’s texting me every day. We have a great relationship.”

That Auburn-Alabama battle is an everyday experience in the Miller household.

Miller grew up a Crimson Tide fan, though he insists that will have “absolutely nothing” to do with his ultimate decision. His father is also an Alabama fan. As for mom, she roots for the Tigers.

Miller joked that she’s the one that usually makes the big decisions around the house, but this one is on Miller’s shoulders.

“Mom usually does, but this one’s on me,” Miller said with a laugh.

Despite the noticeable in-state pull for Alabama’s No. 8 overall prospect, it’s not just an Iron Bowl recruiting contest.

Miller’s high school coach Tim Vakakes said in the fall that, unlike with Moultry, out-of-state programs feel like they have a legitimate chance with Miller. The defensive line prospect said as much Tuesday, mentioning LSU, Clemson, Ole Miss and Florida as non-Alabama schools that stick out to him.

“It’s a big chance I could go out of state. It’s about where I fit,” Miller said.

Miller recently went to Baton Rouge for a visit and was quite impressed. He plans to make it to Clemson soon and Florida — for the first time — over the summer.

As for a decision, it’ll come after his senior season, but he’ll start to narrow in on official top schools a little before that.

“I’ll probably narrow it down, if not before the season, during it,” Miller said.

Mommas usually know best

Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Miami: Top defensive performers (Rivals)
quote:

2019 CB Keontra Smith

Recruiting wrap: Smith holds offers from Auburn, Louisville, Indiana, Kentucky and others.

Performance: A class of 2019 prospect, Smith was one of the more aggressive defensive backs at the camp. He jammed receivers well, but also made a number of plays deep down field. Smith is long and versatile. He should collect a long list of offers in the year ahead.

Rivals rolling out some 2019 rankings this week. Releasing 20 names each week that have earned a star rating

Class of 2019: New star rankings revealed for 20 top prospects (Rivals)
quote:

4* WR Trevion Burks

Warren, Ark. wide receiver Treylon Burks is another skill position player to watch early on with great size and the ability to dominate physically.

“Burks is a physical football player. He is tough to slow down off the line of scrimmage due to his size and he is a wide receiver with the ability to break tackles and get up the field after the catch,” Simmons said. “He has shown the ability to run away from defenders or catch the short pass or fight for the ball in coverage. Burks has the size, hands and playmaking ability schools covet. Arkansas and Auburn are two big early offers but plenty more will be arriving.”

quote:

4* WR Jalen Curry

Stafford, Texas, is well-represented early with wide receiver Jalen Curry and his tall, angular frame earning early four-star distinction. Curry is not only being recruited heavily in Big 12 country but the SEC and ACC are also taking early notice.

“Curry is one of the most physically well-put together receivers in Texas in his class,” Rivals.com Texas Recruiting Analyst Nick Krueger said. “He's an explosive and strong runner that attacks the ball when he catches it.”

Class of 2019: Star rankings revealed for 20 more prospects (Rivals)
quote:

4* OT Devontae Dobbs, 4* C Clay Webb

Two big offensive linemen also highlight this group with Belleville, Mich. offensive tackle Devontae Dobbs and Oxford, Ala. center Clay Webb.

“Early in his prep career Dobbs looked more like a defensive end than an offensive tackle physically, even though he was dominating upperclassmen in off-season events as an offensive lineman,” said Rivals.com Midwest Recruiting Analyst Josh Helmholdt. “In the last few months, Dobbs has filled out his frame while still maintaining the plus-athleticism that has earned him 20 offers including Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and others.”

As for Webb, it’s not often we talk about a center this early in the process but his Underclassmen Challenge performance this past summer and excellent sophomore year put him squarely on the map.

“Webb is just nasty. He loves to drives his man off the ball and put his man in the dirt. He has moved around the offensive line, but on the next level, he will be a guard or center. He has that flat-back in his stance and he plays with good leverage and strength,” said Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst Chad Simmons. “He fires off the ball with great hips and when he locks his hands in, it is over. Webb is an intense competitor who loves to fight in the trenches.”

Scout looks at the surprising performances from The Opening Atlanta (Scout)
quote:

Athens (Ga.) Christian athlete Richard Jibunor was the talk of The Opening Atlanta and the root of it was a surprise in itself -- the linebacker projection lined up at defensive line for the first time ever -- en route to an MVP performance. Clearly the three-star, who has picked up a Notre Dame offer since the impressive performance, beat blockers with a great first step, surprisingly strong hands and some counter moves to make plays towards the passer underneath. Jibunor is among the most versatile prospects in the South.

Scout examines the top underclassmen prospects from The Opening Atlanta (Scout)
quote:

It is scary to think 2019 LaGrange (Ga.) Troup County defensive end King Mwikuta has two years of high school left to play. The 6-4, 225-pound Mwikuta actually lined up at linebacker for most of the day and looked very comfortable. He reacted quickly and changed directions fluidly. Mwikuta was very physical and showed great athleticism. The Troup County standout was also great in pursuit and closed quickly on the ball. Many in the SEC are after his verbal commitment.

quote:

Pinson (Ala.) Pinson Valley quarterback Bo Nix rose above all other quarterbacks in attendance to take home positional MVP honors and Scout was in agreement. His mechanics, footwork and accuracy were very impressive. Regardless if he was in the pocket or on the move, Nix made all the throws. The Auburn legacy holds an offer from the Tigers, as well as Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia and Ohio State among others.

quote:

Last year at The Opening Atlanta, Clay Webb was the surprise of the event. Much was expected a year later and the Oxford (Ala.) High School star did not disappoint. An early four-star prospect and among the best in the state of Alabama, he looked like one of the top trench talents regardless of class or position considering he worked at all five offensive line spots. Webb showcases his wrestling background with his patience, hand placement and ability to defeat counter moves all on a strong base. The sophomore is well put together without much bad weight relative to his position. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi State and others have offered early on.

Auburn in 'unofficial' top 3 for big running back Harold Joiner (AL.com)
quote:

Mountain Brook running back Harold Joiner isn't planning on making a decision until December, but Auburn is in the mix with two SEC West rivals for his commitment.

"It's unofficial, but LSU, Auburn and Ole Miss (are my top three) right now," Joiner told AL.com Sunday during Nike's The Opening Atlanta regional camp. "(Auburn) runs a similar offense as we do as my high school, and they're a family team down there so that's pretty cool. And the coaches communicate with you pretty well."

The 6-foot-3, 217-pounder has been targeted by Auburn running backs coach Tim Horton, though the Tigers also like him at receiver.

"(Horton's) just telling me that he needs power," Joiner said. "Coach (Gus) Malzahn told me he could switch me out to receiver too. I'm fine with that. I have fine hands."

Joiner's most recent visits were to LSU and UAB. He said he believes Georgia is close to offering, and his interest in Alabama would be "pretty high" should the Crimson Tide do the same.

"They're a powerful offense and always a great team," said Joiner, who grew up a fan of both Alabama and Auburn.

Joiner is ranked as a three-star prospect and the nation's No. 18 running back in the 247Sports Composite. He will play running back and wide receiver this season and will attempt to graduate in December so he can enroll early in college.

As a junior last fall, he rushed for 744 yards and eight touchdowns with nine catches for 180 yards two more scores.

Auburn signed two running backs in the 2017 recruiting cycle -- Southside-Gadsden's Alaric Williams and Tampa Catholic's Devan Barrett. Both are four-star prospects. The Tigers also hold a 2018 commitment from all-purpose back Shaun Shivers.

AU commits/targets testing numbers at The Opening Atlanta (247)
quote:

The Opening Atlanta Regional held Sunday north of Atlanta showcased some of the top football prospects in the 2018, 2019 and 2020 classes not only in the south -- but the entire country.

It featured heavily offered and highly touted recruits at every postion.

One of them, offensive guard Jalil Irvin, is an Auburn commit. Many more are Tiger targets.

While it's great to watch these recruits compete in position drills and one-on-ones, it's also good to learn their measurements and testing numbers, which we will present in this article.

Of note, prospects had the option to scratch in any test.

Also, by and large, 40-yard dash times were slower at this event, perhaps the result of a slick field.

Without further ado, here are some noteworthy results of Tiger commits, Tiger targets and potential targets ....
