KN dropped a pretty big insider today. Here's summary
- Gonna have to wait longer on 4* Buck Richard Jibunor. He won't be on campus next weekend (will be at Tennessee instead) but KN says AU still seems to be in best spot with TEN/UF next
- KN says it's possible AU backs off Fields at some point if they feel like they aren't making up any ground. Coaching staff is really excited with what Gatewood has done and might be comfortable to just take him. Fields is trending UGA (WTF)
- Chip Lindsey will attent Gatewood's game on the last week of October when AU has a bye. He will be facing a talented secondary that includes a 2019 UF commit in Trent Whittemore.
- 3* TE Tyneil Hopper is planning on visiting for AU/MSST next week. AU is still evaluating him
- KN says keep an eye on 3* La'Dedric Jackson. If AU misses on Tindall, Peterson and/or Walker AU might push for the MIZZ commit. Supposedly he's had a strong senior season
- AU continues to work on Saivon Smith (former LSU DB) and staff is working to get him to visit. A source of his says high chance AU gets him on campus soon. Also AU continues to talk with 4* Christian Tutt
- Former AU TE Landon Rice is probably going to sign with a Power 5 school next season
- KN believes the top 5 for 4* OT Badara Traore are Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and TExas. Ohio State could get in on it as well. AU plans to see one of Traore games but he plays on Saturdays so if they do it will be on Oct 28 when AU is off. Traore will probably not visit again before making a commitment
- Clemson has offered 4* WR Matthew Hill as a safety. AU feels good about him sticking for now
- 3* S Jamien Sherwood visited UF last week but AU still feels good about him sticking. He's planning on signing early
- Garner was 4* DT Coynis Miller's game last night and Miller had a really good game that included rushing for a TD. Still an AU/UF battle
- 3* RB Shaun Shivers plans on attending a few AU games specifically Ole miss or UGA along with Bama
- AU is apparently trending up with 3* TE Michael Parker. The concern is if Bama ever gives him a committable offer he will jump all over it. Because of that AU might only take him if he agrees to sign in December to avoid any late offers from Bama. Should be interesting to watch

That's what is so frustrating and a sign of how bad things are that someone, who wasn't a lifelong UGA lock, could see Jim Chaney as a better option.

It's sad I would rather see us get a QB that is a mediocre at best passer so that's Gus will actually utilize their running ability. I'm afraid if he gets Fields he will just turn him into a crappy pocket passer instead of utilizing him at a dual threat.

I think you're misunderstanding what back off means in this context.
We would not be pretending like we don't want him anymore. We would be spending more time with other recruits since we don't feel like we can get Fields. I'm not sure how you could interpret that as Gus covering his arse.

It is a meaningless term used in recruiting circles. Basically Gus is conceding that he lost (because he is a shite recruiter) and he or someone on staff is now covering his arse by letting info leak that we are "backing off."

Also we aren't backing off right now. We may if it looks like all hope is lost. Next weekend will be big. If AU can get Fields on campus for MSST then clear we still in it
