Big day for visits Thursday

Saturday won’t be the only big recruiting day on the Plains.

Auburn will host two dozen prospects for its weekend cookout. But before that, the Tigers have an important day of recruiting on Thursday as a couple top prospects are in town for visits.

Four-star offensive lineman Trey Hill is back on the Plains. He was at Auburn for Big Cat Weekend with his father, and he’s back Thursday for another visit. Hill is much more within Auburn’s reach than previously believed. The more he visits, the more likely it is for the Tigers to nab him.

Four-star linebacker JJ Peterson is similar to Hill in the sense he’s been viewed as a lean to another school, yet Auburn remains in the conversation. Peterson returns for another visit Thursday, though he’ll head to Alabama — his public leader — for the Crimson Tide cookout on Friday.

Four-star 2019 wide receiver Mark Richards hasn’t been talked about much (partially because there is so much left in the 2018 cycle). But this is a huge 2019 visit for the Tigers. Richards is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound athlete from West Palm Beach, Fla., that Auburn will try to woo with his first visit to the Plains on Thursday.

Top offensive line target Trey Hill says Auburn is ‘in it a lot’ after seventh visit to the Plains (SECCountry)
quote:

AUBURN, Ala. — Trey Hill has been to Auburn as much as anywhere else.

His visit on Thursday made it “six or seven times,” according to the 4-star offensive lineman. Before he received an Auburn offer, Hill had visited the Plains at least four times, which is a telling sign of his interest in the Tigers. Hill claims to have a completely open recruitment, but he continues to be linked more to Georgia, Florida State and Clemson than other programs.

In Hill’s mind, however, Auburn’s chance is as high as any.

“Oh yeah. They’re in it a lot. I’ve been talking to Auburn. That was probably my first visit when I started getting recruited. I was here four or five times before I even got the offer,” Hill said. “It’s just the family here. Everything is like family. It’s a great coaching staff. I think they can get me to where I need to be in life.”

Speaking of family, Hill’s entire one joined him on the visit.

He’d made the trip with his dad before. This time around, his dad, mom, brother and sister all made it to Auburn for the visit. Most of his time was spent with offensive line coach Herb Hand who has recruited Hill for two years, touring the campus and facilities.

“I just brought my family up here just to let them see the facilities. I’ve been up here six or seven times, so I was basically just letting them see the place, let them get a feel for it,” Hill said. “They like the place. They got a good vibe from it. They like the atmosphere.”

Auburn is recruiting Hill has a guard or center, much like most of the programs involved. Hill doesn’t have a preference other than he wants “the quickest way to the field,” he said. He spoke with Hand and Gus Malzahn about Auburn’s depth chart and talked some scheme.

The Tigers’ message is clear — and has stayed consistent.

“They’re just recruiting me hard, like always. They’ve never given up on me,” Hill said. “It’s the same thing. I’m a top priority here on the O-line. They really want me. I’ve been up here, and they’ve never switched up. We’ve got a good relationship. I’ve been talking to (Hand) for like two years. We just sat down and talked ball and Xs and Os.

Hill plans to make a late December commitment.

Between now and then, he expects to make it to Auburn on more than one occasion. Hill hasn’t set official visit plans yet, but he will likely attend multiple games at Jordan-Hare Stadium this fall. He talks with Hand as much as any other position coach, also including Georgia’s Sam Pittman and USC’s Neil Callaway in that closest-relationship group.

Auburn’s success in the 2017 season will be something the 6-foot-4, 330-pound lineman tracks.

“Wins and losses, it’s going to matter in some aspect. You want to go to a winning team where they’re going to do good stuff,” Hill said.

Auburn QB commit Joey Gatewood expects offense to ‘take off’ in 2017, unaffected by Justin Fields recruitment (SECCountry)
quote:

Joey Gatewood‘s visits to Auburn are few and far between, so he makes the most of them.

The Auburn quarterback commit made his most recent trip to the Plains this week, which was his first time on campus since A-Day. His next Auburn visit won’t take place until his official visit for either the Mississippi State game on Sept. 30 or the Ole Miss game on Oct. 7.

So he treasured every moment of his three-night stay.

“It’s still home. It’s just home. Nothing switched. I’m still going to Auburn. It’s always going to be home,” Gatewood said. “I was just glad to be back. There wasn’t anything super different about it. But it was just really good to be back.”

Gatewood spent time with several members of the Tigers, but the interaction likely to catch most people’s attention was his film session with offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Those three spent time together in the film room, breaking down tape and giving Gatewood a better idea of what to expect from a Lindsey offense.

It was one of Gatewood’s first player-coach moments with the new offensive coordinator.

“It was awesome to check out what they do on offense. It’s so similar to what I do in high school, so it shouldn’t be a hard transition,” Gatewood said. “He’s still laid back. He’s real easy to learn from. He explains everything in detail. I expect them to take off. It looked like they have a really, really good team coming in. I’m excited to see how they do.”

One thing Gatewood said they didn’t talk about much: Auburn’s recruitment of a second quarterback, specifically Justin Fields.

That’s because they didn’t have to.

The Auburn coaching staff has laid out the depth chart and Gatewood understands the need to have depth at quarterback. He said he also knows there will quarterback battles at every program, no matter who is on the roster.

In other words, Auburn doesn’t have to talk to Gatewood about the potential addition of another quarterback because it won’t change his commitment.

“It wouldn’t change a thing. No, not at all,” Gatewood said. “Wherever you go, you have to have competition. At the end of the day, that’s going to be there wherever you go. So it doesn’t affect me.”

Gatewood and Fields had the opportunity to work alongside each other and compete during the Elite 11 camp in Los Angeles. They didn’t talk much about recruiting or much about football, but Gatewood said the two standout quarterbacks connected during their interactions: “He beat me in ping-pong a lot,” he joked. “He’s cool, though. He’s real cool.”

For now, Auburn’s only quarterback commit is focused on two things — preparing for a state championship run and recruiting other targets.

Gatewood has been working with a private quarterback trainer to fine-tune his skill set. He’s been a star in workouts this week, squatting 520 pounds and benching 335 pounds during team activities at Bartram Trail High School near Jacksonville, Fla.

He doesn’t shy away from who he wants to join him in the class, name-dropping Justyn Ross, Asa Martin and Tank Jenkins, specifically. Even though he won’t be at the weekend cookout, he’ll be sure to be in contact with several of the top targets.

“I don’t really have a go-to message. I just start conversation,” he said. “I just talk to them and hope they choose Auburn.”

I know feelings on here are mixed on Gatewood but I still think he's a must get for us in this class and has a chance to be a star. He will need time for sure but dude has a great attitude and elite athleticism

Mark Richards, brother of Miami standout WR, makes second visit to ‘beautiful’ Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:

Brother of former target makes second visit

AUBURN, Ala. —Technically, it was Mark Richards’ second Auburn visit.

The 2019 athlete’s first trip came Nov. 27, 2015, when he joined his brother Ahmmon Richards — now a standout wide receiver at Miami — on his Auburn official visit. Nearly two years later, it’s time for the younger Richards to focus on his recruitment.

He visited Auburn with his mother Thursday afternoon. The school that came in second place for his brother made a major impression on him.

“That’s really why I came back because I wanted to see what the coaches had to tell me personally. They were recruiting my brother. They weren’t recruiting me. So I wanted to really give them a chance and see what they had to say,” Richards said. “I kinda knew what I was going to see, but I came back to see what the coaching staff had to tell me, kinda just experience the area.”

Richards’ position is unclear.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect from West Palm Beach, Fla., plays offense and defense in high school. He was greeted for his visit by Auburn defensive backs coach Greg Brown, so that may give an idea of how the Tigers project him. But Richards spoke with Brown and briefly with offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and coach Gus Malzahn.

“He left [my position] open for me. He wanted to see where I felt most comfortable. I talked to coach and he said really where my heart is, that’s where I can come play,” Richards said. “I’m not really sure on that one. I can answer that my senior year.”

Returning to Auburn gave Richards an opportunity to reminisce on his brother’s recruitment. In the younger Richards’ mind, Auburn finished second to Miami. Because of that, many people at Wellington (Fla.) expect Richards to follow a similar path to his brother.

He isn’t ruling that out, but he wants to make sure to see everything before making a decision.

“A lot of kids at my school think I’m going to go there. But really, my recruitment is open. Every school has an opportunity. I don’t care what record, what ranking,” Richards said.

So far, the 4-star athlete has offers from Miami, Auburn, Georgia, Louisville, Florida and Ohio State. He took visits to Auburn and Georgia this week and didn’t hesitate when asked whether he’ll attend any games at Jordan-Hare Stadium this fall: “Of course. Definitely,” he said.

He plans to be back for the Iron Bowl, but it’s possible Richards comes to multiple games this fall.

“It’s beautiful. It’s really nice here. It’s peaceful. I talked to the coaching staff. They told me really good things about what I wanted to know,” Richards said. “I just want to see them be successful really. Success is everything. Once again, it was really what I expected, the atmosphere around the place. It was really nice here.”

Top linebacker target stays at Auburn overnight

The No. 1 outside linebacker in the nation visited Auburn yet again Thursday. He turned the trip into an overnight visit.

JJ Peterson hasn’t hidden his love for Alabama. But on the eve of the Crimson Tide cookout, the 4-star prospect from Colquitt County (Ga.) took a visit to the Plains and elected to spend the night. As a result, SEC County didn’t have the opportunity to speak with him about his visit, but the fact he stayed overnight has to be a positive sign for the Tigers.

Peterson spent most of his visit with Auburn linebackers coach Travis Williams. In the past, Peterson has said his relationship with Williams is stronger than with any other coach in the nation. That will be Auburn’s big pull.

Peterson was joined on the visit by his girlfriend, his child and the wife of his high school coach, Rush Propst.

After traveling the past 2 days, will be in one place this weekend with a somewhat stable internet connection so hopefully will be around if any news goes down this weekend. I think Matthew Hill, Zakoby McClain, Michael Harris and Jamien Sherwood are all on commit watch. Curious to see if we get any surprise visitors added to the list as well

KN says Juanyeh Thomas might be camping at AU today. Maybe we work him out at CB & take his commitment for that spot. I personally really want him in the class. Good combination of size and speed

Seems like we would want him regardless with the lack of depth at S and having a few guys leaving too

Ah hour after posting that Keith said false alarm. He's not coming to camp. Then another hour later Keith said both sides are now trending to be moving on from each other.

With Scout now in 247's network, looks like their guys can now put in CB picks. Jason Caldwell put in 3 predictions to AU on Michael Harris, Zakoby McClain and Jamien Sherwood

Also tons of picks coming in for Tank Jenkins to Louisville. KN says that AU likes Jenkins but after he didn't commit Sunday might be going after others harder. AU apparently thinks they are a much bigger player for Trey Hill than ppl realize and so might focus more on him. Louisville insiders think Jenkins might commit to the Cardinals this weekend. KN thinks AU will keep up communication but for now both sides are looking around

Also we offered 2 guys at camp today. 3* OL Jalen Goss and 3* DE Kayode Oladele

This doesn't really make much sense. We are moving on because he didn't commit to us last Sunday, but he is about to commit to Louisville this weekend????

Honestly don't know. My best guess is after Hills visit they think we can get him so Jenkins might have missed his window. If we don't get him maybe that opens the door again. I don't know. Just sounds like he's trending Louisville and we looking elsewhere

the visit with Hill yesterday could've helped move this decision this way.

Also, Auburn could feel like we can land him later if we pushed

WOW! That's awesome! He showed out at our camp earlier this summer. Expected to be a top recruit in next year's class. Big time pickup

I'd love to be privy to these conversations/decisions behind the scenes. Things that seemingly make no sense happen all the time. Hope we don't miss out on Tank going on some wild goose chase for Hill.
