Auburn recruits kid since Sophomore year, blows out knee Senior year, then does not qualify academically. Sounds about right.

My best guess for commitments would be Shedrick Jackson, Matthew Hill, Andres Fox and Quindarious Monday. Don't think they all commit but wouldn't be surprised if a few jumped on board

Not sure what's up with Miller. He has been very vocal about taking visits out of state before announcing so it could just mean he plans to announce before the season. Gonna take a lot tho for anyone to take him away from Bama

ESPN's ranking of Harris is just stupid. That's major reason why he not a composite 4*. I think he's a top 100 player. Jibunor is a 3* guy right now but has the raw talent to eventually be really good. Also really like Foucha. Wish he was a bit bigger but definitely a playmaker. Add in Fox and I would take all four of those 3*s right now

Really hope Trey Hill makes the trip. That's a recruitment where if you hang around long enough and we have a good season in 2017 we could pull off a stunner. He's the #1 OL this cycle imo that's including Jamaree Salyer and Jackson Carmen. Dude is a monster

KN says 3* RB Tae Provens starting to talk more with AU than in the past. He grew up AU fan but has been trending Tennessee. Provens hadn't had a ton of contact with staff but sounds like that's changed recently. I don't take that as a good sign for our RB recruiting....

FWIW Horton really likes Provens and offered him a longtime ago

Auburn OL commit Jalil Irvin breaks down suitors, position preference and recruiting strategies (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn OL commit talks Tigers

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Check out a Stephenson (Ga.) practice and you’ll find college coaches from all over the place.

Stephenson is known for producing multiple Division I prospects every year. Auburn reaped the benefits of the Jaguars’ talent-rich tradition last recruiting cycle when the Tigers landed underrated safety Carlito Gonzalez. Auburn, once again, found a Stephenson connection in 2018 with 4-star offensive line commit Jalil Irvin.

Irvin isn’t the only gifted player at Stephenson, but he’s a big reason why the high school’s practices are filled with college scouts.

Ohio State, Minnesota, Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida and Mississippi State are just a few of the programs that stopped by the Stone Mountain, Ga., school to check out Irvin during the evaluation period.

Don’t worry, Auburn.

“I’m just being cordial with them,” Irvin told SEC Country. “They know. I’m really all Auburn. I’m really focusing on them. But I’m just talking to them because you never know what could happen with a coaching staff or something like that. I’m just being cordial and respectful.”

Irvin’s primary focus this spring has been fine-tuning the little things — his footwork, his punch, his stance. Those are all topics Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand has brought up in his conversations with Irvin since the offensive lineman committed earlier in the year. As Irvin has worked on those specific skill sets, he’s started to get a better idea of where he projects at the next level.

He’s listed as the No. 16 offensive guard in the nation (per 247Sports composite rankings), and guard is where virtually all programs have recruited him.

Irvin is fine with that, but he actually thinks — with some extra work — he fits better elsewhere on the offensive line.

“I’ve been recruited at guard, but I actually think I’d be better as a center. Once I get down there with Coach Hand, I feel like he’ll be able to maximize what I can do there. You know, I’m a little bit undersized. I feel like I have a little bit of dog in me,” Irvin said. “If I go to center, I think I’ll be perfectly fine.”

Aside from that, Irvin’s main focus has been recruiting other prospects to Auburn.

He’s mentioned Dylan Wonnum in the past as an offensive lineman he’d really like to join him on the Plains. Richard Jibunor said last week that a tag team of Joey Gatewood, Shaun Shivers and Irvin has made him feel especially wanted at Auburn. So, Irvin is doing his part as a recruiter.

He has a relatively standard answer, with a more personalized story, for why fellow recruits should choose the Tigers.

“I say family environment. Family environment because coach [Gus] Malzahn, the first time I met him, his wife was in there. I still remember to this day, they were playing Arkansas. I was talking to my mom and his wife. I’ve been to a lot of colleges, and nobody really does that,” Irvin said. “It’s a real family. A lot of colleges talk about it, but they’re a real family environment.”

A few updates on Justin Fields

SEC Country and DawgNation have done a 5-star job over the last week reporting on dual-threat quarterback Justin Fields.

Auburn entered the Fields sweepstakes a few weeks ago when the Tigers opted to take two quarterbacks in the 2018 class, starting with an offer to the 5-star quarterback. He’s currently committed to Penn State, but multiple programs from the SEC sphere figure to be in as good of position as the Nittany Lions for Fields’ services.

Alabama writer Chris Kirschner and Georgia writer Jeff Sentell attended Fields’ spring game last week, which resulted in a few pieces of strong content/updates on Fields.

Check those out here:

Watch Justin Fields’ spring game highlights
Chance of UGA, others to flip Fields
Fields updates relationship with Penn State
Fields and his father discuss Florida interest
That’s a lot of non-Auburn material. Most of that has to do with the fact his relationship with the Tigers is a relatively newfound one. All those other programs handed out offers to Fields well before Auburn did, so the Tigers will have to play catch-up.

It’s certainly not out of the question.

Fields plays for the Cam Newton 7-on-7 team, which usually piques the curiosity of Auburn faithful.

Recruiting Rewind: Auburn prospect Noah Igbinoghene ‘wanted to stay close to home’ (SECCountry)
quote:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Let’s all take a quick phonetics class.

Even Gus Malzahn should probably tune in. When Malzahn went through the Auburn football list on National Signing Day, he made a name change to one of his new wide receivers because, well, it’s not the easiest name to pronounce.

“I’m just going to start calling him ‘Iggy.’ I don’t know exactly how to pronounce that last name, so it’s Noah ‘Iggy,’ ” Malzahn said in February.

That’s how Malzahn opened his comments on Noah Igbinoghene. Let us break it down for you, Gus. It’s “Ig-bin-og-in-ee.” It rolls right off the tongue.

Igbinoghene’s name pronunciation isn’t the only thing people in the Auburn community don’t know about the future football and track star for the Tigers. His recruitment flew mostly under the radar. Auburn didn’t offer Igbinoghene until midway through the 2016 season. He committed to the Tigers not long after, on Thanksgiving Day.

Take a look back at Igbinoghene’s recruitment, one that didn’t receive much attention at the time.

The following is a Q&A with Igbinoghene for SEC Country’s Auburn recruiting rewind series.

Q: If you could give a junior one piece of advice about the recruiting process, what would it be?

A: “Stick to the values you want and the school you want. Don’t try to change anything because of different recruits. Just focus on your recruitment. Don’t focus on all the big ones. Just focus on yourself.”

Q: What school came in second? What could they have done better?

A: “Hmm. Probably Notre Dame. It was just too cold [laughing]. That’s about it. There’s nothing they could really do about that.”

Q: What was the most creative thing a school or coach did to get your attention?

A: “Auburn’s official, the night we got there, all the coaches and recruits, we had a big dinner. I don’t even know where it was. It was somewhere on campus. It was so good.”

Q: What was the biggest rumor about your recruitment that wasn’t true?

A: “I don’t really think there was any rumors for me. I kept it pretty quiet.”

Q: What’s the biggest secret you kept during the recruiting process that you only told a few people?

A: “Probably that I wanted to stay close to home. My family knew that, but not all of the college coaches knew.”

Q: What’s your biggest regret from the recruiting process?

A: “Probably not going to The Opening and camps like that. I usually skipped because of track. I wish I would’ve gone to them just to get the experience and the exposure. It would’ve helped with everything.”

Q: Which coach was it the hardest to tell no?

A: “Duke. Coach [David] Cutcliffe, they were all nice. It was just hard to say no. They stuck with me since the beginning. It was just hard to say no.”

Q: What school disappointed you the most during your recruitment?

A: “Ole Miss, they came in right at the end. Oregon came in like two weeks before Signing Day. They wanted me to come up for a visit. I was like, ‘There’s no way. I’m not going to waste my time.’ I wish they’d reached out to me earlier, so I really could’ve checked them out.”

Q: How much negative recruiting was out there?

A: “I really didn’t get that much.”

Q: Which non-Auburn coach was the nicest to you? Anyone that was a little more hard-edged?

A: “Coach Cutcliffe was definitely the nicest. He was always great. Then I’d probably say the Notre Dame head coach [Brian Kelly]. He wasn’t mean, but you could tell once you get in there, you probably shouldn’t mess with him.”

Q: If you were in charge of the NCAA, what’s the one rule you would change with recruiting?

A: “I guess that coaches should be able to talk to recruits a lot more. There are certain times they can text you and stuff like that. I feel like it would be better for everyone if there was more open communication the whole time.”

Seems most recruits in this have said they wish there weren't so much restriction on communication which I find interesting

Top Auburn DB target Jalyn Armour-Davis set to announce college decision early (SECCountry)
quote:

State’s top defender has imminent decision

In a dramatic turn of events, Jalyn Armour-Davis has pushed his commitment timetable way up.

As first reported by 247Sports and confirmed by SEC Country, Armour-Davis has decided to announce his college decision with a single tweet on Friday at 12:30 p.m. Armour-Davis told SEC Country earlier in the month that he thought his decision timeframe ranged from middle of the summer to middle of the football season.

That plan has clearly changed. He’ll announce his decision between Auburn, Florida State and Alabama — his final three.

What also may have changed are Armour-Davis’ feelings about his decision. For a while, these notebooks have had one common message regarding the state of Alabama’s top cornerback: It’s an FSU-Auburn battle that Alabama has a legitimate shot of working its way into.

Armour-Davis confirmed at his state track meet that the Crimson Tide had, in fact, made a major move in his recruitment. Alabama wasn’t in Armour-Davis’ top 6, but — as he trimmed his list even further — Alabama became more and more of a factor, thanks to the recruiting efforts of his primary recruiter Jeremy Pruitt, the Crimson Tide defensive coordinator.

Here’s what Armour-Davis had to say about Alabama’s re-entrance to his top list of schools at the time.

“They just wondered where I went wrong, and I wouldn’t say there was anything they did wrong. It was just a way I was feeling. I think, from a more mature standpoint, it would just be a 10 times better decision for them to be in it,” Armour-Davis said on Alabama not originally being in his top 6. “I was more excited in the moment and wanted to push something out. I just took a step back to look at all my schools and everything outside of football.”

There’s also Auburn and Florida State, the two programs most closely tied to Armour-Davis is recent months.

Both of those programs have been cautiously optimistic regarding Armour-Davis for a while now, and Armour-Davis has shown them both major love to feel that way. Until this week, most Armour-Davis predictions would’ve gone to either one of those two programs, and both schools will be in the thick of things when the nation’s No. 15 cornerback announces just prior to the weekend.

But there is a growing trend in the recruiting world that might not settle well with the Auburn fan base. Multiple recruiting reporters, myself included, have forecasted Crystal Ball predictions in Alabama’s favor on this one, and that’s the way I see it going when Armour-Davis chooses on Friday.

Let’s make something else abundantly clear, however: This doesn’t mark the end of Armour-Davis’ recruitment.

All three schools, and maybe even others, will continue to recruit him the same way they have for years. When it comes time to take official visits, you can expect to see Armour-Davis take those. When home visits roll around, all three coaching staffs will make their presence felt. As Armour-Davis even admitted to 247Sports, he knows the “pressure” will pick back up after his football season when he has to reassess these options in a much more personalized and intense form.

Worth noting, student-athletes can’t graduate early from St. Paul’s Episcopal (Ala.) in Mobile, so Armour-Davis’ recruitment will run all the way up until the original National Signing Day in February that we’ve all grown to know and love.

As we know he ended up not committing Friday. I have a feeling this recruitment might end up going to NSD. FWIW the Bama SECCountry guy says that he does not need to camp to get an offer

Keep it in the family

Auburn preaches family to recruits, even the ones with no real familial ties to the university. When Auburn screams family to Shedrick Jackson, it’s a little more authentic.

Well-documented, Jackson is the nephew of Auburn legend Bo Jackson. The younger Jackson is a standout wide receiver for Hoover (Ala.) who released his top-5 list of schools on Wednesday afternoon, which included the Tigers.

The full list includes: Auburn, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Mississippi State and Memphis.

Jackson has downplayed some of the outside world’s guarantees that he will inevitably land at Auburn.

“People think that if I got an Auburn offer, which I have, that it’s 100 percent that I’m going there. In my mind, that’s not really what I’m thinking,” Jackson told SEC Country last month. “I’m picking the school that has the most to offer for me and my future.”

Still, it seems far-fetched for the Tigers to miss out on someone who grew up an Auburn fan, grew up attending Tigers’ games regularly and grew up knowing that his uncle was arguably the most famous and successful person to ever step foot on the Plains as a student-athlete. Jackson’s decision remains a summer or so away, but his name will likely surface throughout as a momentum-able (yes, just made up a word) commitment possibility.

For now, if there is a non-Auburn team to watch here for Jackson, my gut tells me Georgia Tech. He’s visited recently and said the academic element there has him thinking a lot about the Yellow Jackets.

A little more than a top 5

I’m not a huge fan of writing about top lists, but in the recruiting game, it’s obviously something that has to be done. I’m particularly not high on doing top 10s or top 15s because — as has been proven with Armour-Davis’ top 6 — it’s quite the fickle list.

But I wanted to highlight Auburn safety target Joseph Foucha’s recent top-15 release for two reasons.

1.) He’s one of Greg Brown’s top DB targets in the class.
2.) He does something quite out of the ordinary in his video list.

Check out the video here that shows Foucha’s continued interest in Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Michigan, Oregon, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Oregon State, Arizona State, Florida State, Oklahoma, Arkansas, TCU, Kansas and Texas-San Antonio.

As for the schools, Auburn, Alabama and TCU are the teams to watch for now. The Tigers are certainly in good shape as Greg Brown has taken extra efforts to show Foucha early love.

But I also show the video for, to me, the funny moment — probably not funny to Foucha at the time — at the 1:48 mark when he, well, pukes from the workout in the rest of the video. It’s not something you ordinarily, or ever, see from a recruit in a top list video or commitment video, so I thought it was worth sharing.

I poked a little fun at Foucha for that addition to the video.

His hard-working response via text: “I get it in. Every day is a game for me” with a crying laughing emoji.

Next Generation: Nothing can take smile off face of lifelong Auburn fan, future Tigers DL Alec Jackson (SECCountry)
quote:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Saying Alec Jackson wears his Auburn football fandom on his sleeve would be putting it mildly. Jackson, a 6-foot-5, 284-pound defensive lineman, wears it across both of his sleeves, his chest and his back in the form of a Tigers-branded hoodie.

The hoodie became synonymous with Jackson at Jeff Davis High School in Alabama’s capital city. While many in the hallways wear the JD Volunteers’ green and gold, Jackson proudly sported a bright orange Auburn Tigers sweatshirt seemingly every day.

“He has an Auburn hoodie that I probably first saw him wear in the ninth grade,” Jeff Davis football coach Lee Carter told SEC Country. “He’s still in this same Auburn hoodie. It’s surprising that he hasn’t been in any trouble for dress code violation, because he stays in Auburn gear.”

Jackson’s fashion sense should make an easy transition over the next few weeks, when he settles into living his dream — playing football at Auburn.

He’ll move onto campus this upcoming weekend, the next step in what has been a whirlwind journey for one of the Tigers’ newest defensive linemen.

“I really couldn’t believe when Auburn started recruiting me, because it happened so fast,” Jackson told SEC Country. “I wasn’t able to totally process it. When I got home, I was just sitting down and thinking, ‘Did this really just happen?’ It was very overwhelming.

“Now I’m signed to them, and everything has happened so fast. In just a few weeks, I’ll be there and already enrolled. It’s going to be a great four years.”

A family tradition

Jackson isn’t the only member of his family who stood out with Auburn colors.

His mother, Teresa Lee, used to drive a bright orange Honda. Lee originally is from Indiana, but she has become a diehard Auburn fan during her time in Alabama.

“They just grew on me,” Lee told SEC Country. “I tried to be an Alabama fan, but it just wasn’t working for me.”

Lee passed that adopted Auburn fandom to the rest of her family — except for Jackson’s brother, who kept the house divided by pulling for the Crimson Tide.

Jackson said he grew up watching the Tigers and dreamed of playing in Jordan-Hare Stadium. After making a position change as an underclassman at Jeff Davis, he knew he wanted to be the next great Auburn defensive lineman.

“When I was playing tight end, my favorite player was Philip Lutzenkirchen,” Jackson said. “I ended up playing d-line and getting switched over there. I started looking at Nick Fairley, (Dee) Ford, Montravius Adams, all those guys. Carl Lawson and Marlon (Davidson), too. All of those guys, I just pictured myself playing with them as I played in high school.”

After his junior year at Jeff Davis, those dreams moved closer to reality.

During one weekend in March 2016, Jackson visited Alabama and Auburn and picked up scholarship offers from both schools. The latter offer was terrific news to the Jackson family.

“It was great, seeing everybody smiling,” Jackson said. “They were all like, ‘Yeah, you better go here.’ They weren’t serious about it. I was just taking it all in and grinning the whole day and the day after at school.”

Jackson’s proud mother also had a massive grin on her face.

“I loved it. I was very excited about them wanting my son to play for them,” Lee said. “I’ve wanted that as long as we’ve been Auburn fans. … It was a relief that they wanted him. That was a great day for us.”

That spring day was also great for Jackson as a prospect.

“Finally getting my name out was huge,” Jackson said. “After Auburn offered, it was over. That’s when my recruitment really started going.”

In the next month, Jackson received scholarship offers from Miami (Fla.), Nebraska, LSU, Tennessee, Southern Cal, Vanderbilt, North Carolina State, Mississippi State, Florida, Texas, Missouri and Maryland.

According to Carter, though, all that attention didn’t change the versatile defensive lineman who had put so much effort into making his position switch work.

“It never stopped how hard he worked,” Carter said. “His mother Teresa did a great job of raising him. … The more and more he got recruited, the harder he worked. While some players who get recruited and kind of let it go to their heads and think they’re above the rest of the team, he never missed a day.”

Doing his due diligence

As much of a diehard Auburn fan as Jackson is, he didn’t jump on the offer from the Tigers.

Scholarship offers continued to pour in for Jackson in the summer before his senior season at Jeff Davis. He took plenty of unofficial visits and attended several camps — including recruiting heavy-hitters Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Texas.

“I encouraged him to make sure what he wanted to do,” Lee said. “He had a lot of opportunities when it came time to decide where to go to college. I just wanted him to be sure where he really wanted to be.”

The biggest challenger for Auburn for Jackson’s commitment was the farthest away from the Plains. Late last November, Jackson took an official visit to Southern Cal. Jackson was a fan of what he saw from the Trojans.

“Going out to LA for the first time, it was pretty great,” Jackson said. “Never really have bad weather. Well, on my official visit, it rained some. It was really sunny until the game, then it started raining. But after that, it was beautiful weather out there. The only thing that was crazy was traffic.”

Shortly after Jackson returned from California, though, the Tigers stepped up their recruiting efforts.

“It’s been no secret that he’s an Auburn fan from Day 1,” Carter said. “When Auburn decided to turn the heat up as far as recruiting him, it was a no-brainer. When he met with Auburn coaches, the glow he had on him was a lot different than meeting with other coaches.”

Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele made an in-home visit in early December. They made quite an impression on Lee, too.

“[Auburn’s coaches] were great,” Lee said. “All of them were down-to-earth and friendly, family types. They’d always give me a hug.”

A few weeks later, Jackson decided to go with his dream school. He announced his commitment on Christmas Day, which he said was a coincidence more than anything.

“Two days before, I prayed about it to make sure it was the right decision,” Jackson said. “The day before Christmas, I felt comfortable about it. So the whole day, I was just sitting and waiting. There was a person who makes pictures and stuff, and I asked him to make one for my commitment. Basically, we waited the whole day. I told him to let me know when he was done with it.

“So it just so happened it was on Christmas. But the media took it to a whole new level. They said it was like a Christmas present for Auburn.”

Jackson’s decision created an extra-special Christmas for his Auburn-loving family.

“I was very happy,” Lee said. “I would’ve been happy with wherever he chose, but because it was Auburn, I was very, very, very happy. … It’s a wonderful place for him to go. It’s family-oriented, and he can get a strong education there. I think he’ll do well.”

Work, hard work

While Jackson didn’t have four or five stars beside his name in high school, he developed a reputation for being a high-energy presence on the defensive line.

Sometimes, his effort is so relentless that coaches have to tell him to take a step back in practice.

“He wants to be the first in every sprint and everything,” Carter said. “One time he cramped up and we had to go get him on the IV in the hospital. The next day, we saw him out there at the water hose before practice. We were like, ‘No, no, no, take a day off.'”

At the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game last December, coaches had to get Jackson to stop making so many plays in practice. He disrupted the flow of drills by swatting down passes over and over again.

“It wasn’t really intentional,” Jackson said with a laugh. “I mean, the first time it was. After that, I was just throwing my hands up. … I was batting balls down left and right. The coaches had to come over to me and go, ‘OK, come on, we’re trying to have practice, too.’ ”

Jackson’s future position coach at Auburn made a special note of that.

“He’s 6-foot-5, may be closer to 6-foot-6, and he has an 85-inch wingspan,” Garner said in February. “He puts his hand in there, and he has the ability to block a lot of balls. Coming out of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game and talking to those coaches, they said he was so disruptive in practices that he just kept batting the ball down. They had to tell him, ‘Don’t put your hands up. We won’t tell anybody.’ ”

Soon, Garner will get his own hands on Jackson, who he believes could play defensive end or traditional defensive tackle. Jackson says Auburn has told him repeatedly he has the ability to play any position on the defensive line.

No matter where he settles in for the Tigers, though, two things will be guarantees for Jackson — hard work and a huge smile.

“In four years, I can’t remember him missing a practice or a workout,” Carter said. “When I say Auburn’s getting a very hard-working individual, I truly mean that.”

As for the smile, it’ll match the one on the face of Jackson’s mother and the rest of his Tigers-obsessed family. When the versatile defensive lineman takes the field for the first time in Jordan-Hare Stadium, he’ll get to live out a family dream.

“I don’t really know what that day’s going to be like,” Lee said. “My heart’s probably going to be in my throat.”

I like Jackson's potential. I think he's a year or two away from breaking into the rotation but he's got some upside. A lot of good defensive coaches wanted him. Also AU could have a starting DL down the road with a 6'5" DT in Jackson and a 6'6" DE in Nick Coe
