Fall camp observations: Auburn gives first look at 1st-team, 2nd-team offenses (OAN)
quote:

Football season is finally almost here.

Auburn held its first practice of fall camp Monday afternoon and allowed the media in to view approximately 20 minutes on the field.

Here are some quick observations:

— Players were just in shorts and t-shirts. Auburn won't wear full pads until the team's fourth practice on Saturday.

— Jason Smith, who has played mostly wide receiver since coming to Auburn, was listed as a defensive back on the fall camp roster and worked exclusively with the defense during the team's first practice. He also change numbers from No. 4 to No. 25.

— Carlito Gonzalez, one of the team's incoming freshman defensive backs, is not listed on the roster. Anders Carlson, who also arrived late, was present at practice.

— Auburn's first-team offense was as follows:

Quarterback: Jarrett Stidham

Running back: Kamryn Pettway | H-back: Chandler Cox

Wide receiver: Nate Craig-Myers, Sal Cannella, Eli Stove (slot)

Offensive line: LT Darius James, LG Marquel Harrell, C Austin Golson, RG Mike Horton, RT Braden Smith

— Auburn;s second-team offense was as follows:

Quarterback: Sean White

Running back: Kerryon Johnson | H-back: Spencer Nigh

Wide receiver: Darius Slayton, Kyle Davis, John Franklin III (slot)

Offensive line: LT Prince Tega Wanogho, LG Kaleb Kim, C Casey Dunn, RG Wilson Bell, RT Bailey Sharp

— Stidham took the first-team reps at quarterback, but White also got a chance to play with the first team during drills.

Auburn practice observations: Jason Smith working as 4th safety (AL.com)
quote:

Auburn is turning to a former receiver to bolster its secondary at the start of fall camp.

Senior Jason Smith, who spent the last two seasons as a little-used receiver, has moved to defensive back on Auburn's official roster, changing his jersey number from 4 to 25. Smith worked as a second-team safety during the open viewing portion of Auburn's first practice on Monday afternoon.

Smith saw time at field safety during drills, working as the backup to senior Stephen Roberts.

Here are some other notes and observations from Auburn's first day of practice:

- Freshman defensive back Carlito Gonzalez is still not listed on Auburn's official roster. Gonzalez was finishing up a class last month and was expected to be on campus for the start of fall camp, coach Gus Malzahn said at SEC Media Days. Malzahn will provide an update on Gonzalez' status later this evening.

- Freshman offensive lineman Calvin Ashley was present and dressed out for practice after undergoing a minor procedure last week.

- There did not appear to be any serious injuries to Auburn players. Several players who were returning from knee injuries, including cornerback Jamel Dean, were dressed out and active participants.

- Freshman Traivon Leonard was not on the printed roster Auburn handed out to media members before practice, but the defensive back was present and dressed out at practice.

- Walk-on Aidan Marshall was splitting reps with Ian Shannon during punting drills. Shannon is looking to secure the starting punter job this fall, though all options remain on the table for Auburn.

- Wide receiver Marquis McClain was off to the side with Auburn's true freshmen during Day 1 of practice, though he is a redshirt freshman.

First-team defense during drills:

- Defensive line: Defensive end Marlon Davidson, defensive tackles Dontavius Russell and Derrick Brown, Buck Jeff Holland.

- Linebackers: Tre' Williams and Darrell Williams

- Defensive backs: field corner Javaris Davis, field safety Stephen Roberts, boundary safety Tray Matthews, nickelback Daniel Thomas, boundary corner Carlton Davis.

Second-team defense:

- Defensive line: Defensive end Nick Coe, defensive tacklse Byron Cowart and Andrew Williams, Buck Paul James III.

- Linebackers: Montavious Atkinson and Deshaun Davis.

- Defensive backs: field corner Jamel Dean, field safety Jason Smith, boundary safety Nick Ruffin, nickelback Jeremiah Dinson, boundary corner John Broussard Jr.

First-team offense:

- Offensive line: LT Darius James, LG Marquel Harrell, C Austin Golson, RG Mike Horton, RT Braden Smith

- Quarterback: Jarrett Stidham opened period with first group, Sean White with second. White then stayed on with first group and Stidham swapped to second.

- Running back: split reps down the line with Kamryn Pettway, followed by Kerryon Johnson, Malik Miller and Kam Martin.

- Second-team offensive line: LT Prince Tega Wanogho, LG Kaleb Kim, C Casey Dunn, RG Wilson Bell, RT Bailey Sharp.

LT Prince Tega Wanogho

If he is second team he can't be in the "Ways to go" category and the insider is no insider at all. Do I think he will have technique issues? Sure, but I am betting his size and athleticism has pushed him to #2 tackle. That is a lofty position to be in to be far from being ready to play.

If it is because we don't have the depth, then we are in trouble if Wanogho indeed has a ways to go.

AUBURN, Ala. — The first day of preseason camp is officially underway at Auburn.

The Tigers started their first practice with the veterans at roughly 2:55 p.m. CT.

A few pertinent notes, which will be updated throughout the afternoon:

— Receiver Jason Smith has moved to defensive back, where he is now wearing the No. 25 instead of 4. He participated in DB drills during the early portion of practice, too.

— Walkon Aidan Marshall will challenge Ian Shannon for the starting job at punter. Marshall, however, did not punt and instead went through the drill motions as Shannon took all snaps in the early portion of the practice.

— Freshman defensive back Carlito Gonzalez was not at practice and was not listed on the roster.

Quarterbacks Jarrett Stidham and Sean White both participated with the first-team unit and received a legit 50-50 split early in practice.

— The offense worked primarily on screen passes to receivers and running backs during a pace drill at the tailend of the open period to the media.

— RB Kam Martin fumbled a screen pass.

— The youngsters, including newcomers, mostly stood off to the side and will participate in practice during the final 12 periods as the veterans take the second half of practice off. Quarterback Malik Willis, despite participating in spring practices, will not practice until the second half of the day. Receiver Marquis McClain, a redshirt freshman, also appeared to be in this group.
