This will be his downfall if he can't correct it. It is too early in his career to worry, but he has had this issue at every level.

We traded a once in a generation player for em.So he needs to get it together sooner rather than later.

Dissapointing considering how in control he looked his first 2 starts.

But yea, he has to at least minimize it. He can't keep starting in the major leagues if he pitches like he did last night control wise.

Once in a generation? From 2015-2017 he ranks #23 amongst shortstops in offensive WAR & wRC+ and #1 in defensive WAR.

He's an incredible defensive shortstop and an average to, this year at least, above average offensive shortstop (#4 amongst shortstops in rRC+ at 122). But he's certainly not once in a generation.

I mean, he's in a generation of shortstops that includes : Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Fransisco Lindor and Xander Bogaerts. I don't think he's as good an overall player as those guys, so he certainly isn't the "one" in his generation. He's not even in the top group.

Honesty are you that bitter and distorted?

Do you or care that a Shortstop is BY FAR the most important defensive position in BB?

Did you even play baseball in HS?

Have you ever heard Simmons mentioned in that group I just named? He's a step below them in WAR and amongst most talent evaluators. I mean come on.

Yes, please do. He's an all timer defensively, but all around? That's ludicrous.

I played shortstop in high school and college, yes.

I love Andrelton. I'm super happy for the success he is having. And, if Newcomb doesn't figure out how to throw strikes then we will look back on that trade as a big fail. But he's not a once in a generation all around shortstop. That's craziness.

Lindor is the best shortstop in baseball right now.

I have not been impressed by Newcomb at all. He had 7 walks last night and it didn't feel unusual.

His first few starts he was pumping strikes, but ever since the Houston start he's been wild in and out of the zone. I don't know if getting shelled sent him back into bad habits or what, but you can't pitch like that and keep a job. Even in the bullpen.

Andrelton actually is third in all of baseball in bWAR. He only trails Sale and Judge. Defensively speaking, he is once in a generation. Overall, he is a great asset and a potential building block for a team, especially if you try to acquire groundball pitcherd.

This guy comments on his command after the trade was made. Seems like it was well known. The trade turned out to be Newcomb for Simmons straight up now. Time will tell if it was worth it, but wild in the zone is a recipe for disaster in the bigs. Personally, I don't see Dansby as a franchise type player. He had one year in college with power. I was always a fan of Simmons and his glove. I am also very skeptical of Newcomb. I have been watching baseball for a long time, and guys with command issues rarely work out.

Agree. Guys at the professional level generally don't "learn" to be patient hitters and pitchers don't usually "learn" how to be precise pitchers. They may slightly improve, but you don't see many guys go from wild to precise. Honestly, the best example of a guy gradually fixing that is Folty. His transformation from right handed Newcomb to a guy who basically throws strikes is pretty incredible. He still has issues, but he's greatly improved that one.

I still think Newcomb ends up being a 8th inning reliever ala Andrew Miller (not necessarily that good, obviously), but we'll see.

It's not all that unusual for guys to improve their BB/9 over their first few years. I personally see Newcomb has a good 3/4 guy in a rotation, not a frontline starter. If we can get him down to 3-4 BB per start, we'll be in good shape.

I'd be ecstatic if we got Folty type improvement in that front.

Do you wanna guess who' s #2 in WAR in MLB and #1 in defense ?

Simmons case for MVP

To not put him on the top tier of SS in MLB is absurd

A "tier" is a group. "Once in generation" is one person better than all the rest. They are not the same thing.

Andrelton has had a great season this year and I'm happy for him. If he has a followup season like this offensively then he will have proven he is an elite SS all around. He will still not be a "once in a generation" shortstop.

Have to like how he has shown he can come back after giving up a run or two without getting rattled. Folty needs that.

They need to have a John Smoltz type come to Jesus meeting with Folty about his emotions this off-season. We'll pay for doctors or whatever, but that shite ends now. We have 15 pitchers in the pipeline and if can't control yourself we will send your arse to Tampa.
