Oh I'm sure there are very personal, very selfish motivations underpinning every last law proposed or passed in this legislative session. Maybe we should pass a law that they only meet once every five years. That way it would be at least five more years before we get set back another 20.

Have you ever been in a chicken house? It's pretty bad.

The bill as written would make event photography almost impossible.

I am a part time photographer who does Weddings. I have read the entire bill several times in order to understand what it says. If this bill passes, I will have to have signed releases from every single person at the wedding who appears in a picture. If I don't, then I am open to a lawsuit.

The same applies to any event that is photographed for money. The law as written carves out several provisions for school events, sports events, etc... but it very clearly does not carve out exceptions for weddings, anniversary parties, street photography, social events, concerts, bar mitzvahs, etc

I'm probably a lot closer to being a Republican on many issues then I am a Democrat but this law will accomplish nothing good and give the state a black eye. I have lived in this state most of my life, and I can honestly say that religious freedom of expression isn't really a problem here.

Religious "freedom" has *never* been a problem in this state. Ever. And it never will be. Like someone said in a previous post, you can't swing a stick in this state without hitting two churches in the process. I'm a born and raised Christian, but for anyone to act as if Christianity is somehow under attack in this state is just laughable, and it's pandering to the lowest common denominator in a state that's embarrassing me more and more as these dumb laws come through.

What I don't get is why any restaurant owner anywhere would want to discriminate. It's dumb for one pretty apparent reason -- you're literally costing yourself sales.

The idiocy we've legislated the last few years is just beyond comprehension.

ETA - Just re-read the first page, and the third post from Benny put it much better and more eloquently than I was able to do in the last sentence above.

quote:

Arkansas spoiled me as a kid. We were national champions in basketball had a fantastic politician as leader of the United States.

Now my only expectation is for the Arkansas legislature to continually embarrass this state on a local and national stage, and not only have they not disappointed but they have done so in a way I couldn't even fathom previously.

Shine on you ignorant diamonds.

Asa vetoed the photography bill. They may override it though.

This is what happens when everybody votes GOP because they don't like the president.

We're stupid. We deserve every negative bomb headed at our state. This will cost us millions, folks.

I wish I could disagree with you. I'm still holding out hope that Asa will veto that craptastic legislation. Maybe he has enough cover from businesses. We can't say that we won't know what happens because of this foolishness, Indiana has shown us.

I feel if Asa had told legislators that he would veto it, they would have voted against it so he wouldn't have to take the fall for changing his mind.

They don't care about weddings, it's about people not photographing cops.

And politicians.

There was a bill or wording in a bill that would make politician's info not FOIA accessible after they failed to be re-elected or left office.

Well. Crap.

Guess which state made the home page of AOL.com just now? Prepare for a solid week or so of coverage about Arkansas and Indiana in the national media folks.

We are going to get kicked in the arse over this.

I can't wait until the first law suit that occurs after a restaurant refuses service to a mixed racial couple or a bi-racial individual.

You know, it says in the bible to not mix the tribes and what not...

The comments section of the Gawker article about Walmart coming out against the bill is both great and humiliating...

quote:

It's depressing that we have to rely on Walmart to settle shite like this for us. This is what happens when you don't vote. You get idiots in the legislature and they frick things up until a grownup comes and straightens them out.

quote:

Wait... so, Indiana passes a law that draws near-unanimous criticism from businesses, other state governments, and anyone with half a brain... and Arkansas' reaction is: "yeah, let's get us some of that action right there." Let's ignore the fundamental problem of a state legislature being in favor anti-gay legislation... from a perspective of pure optics, who in their right mind would pass something like this right now? Not like I have particularly high expectations of Arkansas, but Christ on a trampoline.

Yep, Asa's the front page story on cnn.com right now. He was up there for an hour or so yesterday afternoon, too. All eyes on Arkansas, for the time being.

Hutchinson says he won't sign the bill in its current form, and that it will need changes before he'll sign it.
