That walk on is definitely unhinged, Tennessee fans hated him for the violence he unleashed in our game with them last year

squib would have made more sense.... but if we play defense it's a moot point.

The thing is... we gave up a TD return on the long kick before that. Bad.
Until then we had been having a whale of a game with regular kick offs. We had a couple of kickoffs where A&M was starting around the 15 yard line.
Kick it deep. Yeah, we had one go bad the time before but sometimes that just happens. Kick it deep and the odds are they start around the 20 or 25.

Analytics say you're statistically better to kick to the goal line than to kick a touchback now that they start on the 25. They do the same thing in the pros and every one of those kickers can kick a mile.
That said, frick analytics. My philosophy is every kickoff/punt that doesn't result in a big play is a win. Big returns are HUGE for momentum swings.
Best case scenario you pin them inside their own 5. Even in that extremely rare case it doesn't change momentum much. And if they have one decent play to get away from the goal line it's all for naught.
But the flip side is you run the risk of a big return or (worst-case scenario) a TD return.
IMO the risk outweighs the reward even if statistics say otherwise. Statistics don't take into consideration how deflating it is to give up a return TD. And analytics don't take into consideration the danger of specific players like Kirk whose numbers are probably underrated due to the fact most teams refuse to kick to him.
Good case where common sense should prevail over hard numbers.

Hire Kevin Kelly from PA and go to onside kicks on every kickoff. At least there'd be some reason to watch.
