First of all, thanks for access. I really just wanted in so I could post this.

Thank the great baseball program at Arkansas for producing Dallas Keuchel. He has been exactly what the Astros have been missing since Roy O left/declined. For those who don't follow MLB too much I'll post a few #s from this year.

W-L: 6-1 (tied in 4th in the Majors)
ERA: 1.98 (10th)
IP: 72-2/3 (1st)
Ks: 49
AVG: .190 (3rd)
WHIP: 0.96 (6th)

Basically he's if the season ended today he'd be on a very short list for the Cy Young.

I'd also like to make a small request. Can anyone share any good stories, performances, role on the team (Friday ace?), or just any interesting info on Dallas during his time in Arkansas.

Keuchel and Drew Smyly made a hell of a college tandem. Keuchel was good here but I'm not sure anyone saw him being MLB ace good. He was a big part in our CWS run in 2009 and finished off Virginia in the 12 inning classic that every hog fan will remember (didn't have the beard back then though )

Mike Bolsinger of the Dodgers was on that team too. They were pretty loaded.

In the 2009 CWS Keuchel pitched 6+ and got the win in the Hogs opening round 10-6 win over #1 overall seed Cal State Fullerton.

A few days later Keuchel was called on to close out Virginia in the tenth inning and did so getting the win and going 2-0 in the 2009 CWS

That 2009 team had eventual big league pitchers Keuchel, Mike Bolsinger, Drew Smyly and Detroit Tigers catcher James McCann.

He majored in apparel studies, wants to design shoes and has hundreds of them in his collection

That's all I got

Is that true? If so I'm even more impressed.

100%

quote:

Keuchel is an artist who studied apparel design in Fayetteville. His goal beyond baseball is to work for "Nike or Under Armor or a brand like that designing sports shoes or casual shoes."

And what was apparel design like at the University of Arkansas?

"It was ninety-eight percent girls. I met just a couple of other guys. I learned some good things and had the opportunity to meet some good-looking girls."

Keuchel took to art at a young age.

"I used to go in my room and draw stuff," he remembered. "I had an art teacher in elementary and middle school. Her name is Sandy Huggins and she showed a lot of faith in me."

When Keuchel retreated to his room and pulled out a No. 2 pencil (still his favorite medium), he drew caricatures of Ken Griffey, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa… and automobiles and… shoes. What he loves most about art: "it's just creativity and imagination."

And the link between pitching and art?

"I take great pride in just being free out on the mound. You can't be tense out there, it's a hard game to play. You have to relax and be free. It's just like art, where it's me, the pen and the paper."

The Alcides Nuts fantasy team certainly appreciates him. I picked him up off waivers before the first week of the season and he has been nails

Still pisses me off that 09 team didn't win the Natty.

Dallas Keuchel
Mike Bolsinger
Drew Smyly

All 3 well established MLB starters, Keuchel an ace, Smyly was first to the bigs and is a career 19-14 3.23 ERA starter, and Bolsinger is 3-1 with a 1.15 ERA this year with the Dodgers and has taken over their #4 spot.

Add in the Tigers starting catcher James McCann behind the plate, Eibner, Wilkins, Zack Cox at 3rd, Kuhn was a stud in CF, Richards and Forrest were studs in the pen, Carver at SS...that team was so fricking loaded.

For some reason in 2009, LSU was a thorn in our side. They were good too.

Yeah, for a college team for sure. Looking back, no one on that LSU team other than DJ LeMahieu has done anything in the Majors. Anthony Ranaudo was their ace, he's still in the minors and Mahtook is a career minor leaguer as well.

Obviously players take different paths in pro ball, just looking back now comparing the two they aren't very close.

Yep, back when Eibner was a pitcher, they shelled him and then we battled back from the crazy UVA game and started our bullpen by committee vs them in the 2nd game.

Keuchel won game 1 over Fullerton, and then Smyly started vs UVA with Keuchel getting that save. shite was wild.

Crazy how that works out sometimes, between Keuchel/Smyly/Bolsinger, LSU faced none of them.

Yea. Just goes to show what losing one game in post season can do to your staff.

If you remember just a few weeks prior in Norman was when Smyly really came on the scene.

Yep, I don't think many expected Smyly to do much by the time he ended his career at Ark, maybe a double A or triple A caliber pitcher, same for Bolsinger and Keuchel...we've had much more dominant pitchers come through and most of them have done nothing. You just never know.

Stanek started the year at double A and was demoted to single A a month or so ago. I don't think he'll ever pan out either. I would say he's been our best college pitcher since Nick Schmidt on the 04 team who also battled injuries and never panned out.

Just weird how we may think highly of someone, then they fizzle.

Zach Cox is a good example. He was supposed to be one of the best prospects out there.

Cox and Eibner both from that team, were high end prospects...really thought they'd both do something.

Same for Colby Suggs, one of the best relievers we've had come through, and he has bombed out big time.

Really that whole 2007 starting rotation, that had Nick Schmidt (1st round), Jess Todd (2nd round), and Duke Welker (2nd round), none of them panned out. Only Todd is still pitching in the minors.
