Have you guys been eating paint chips?

This is a good hire.

Who cares about Southern Ties....You have to hire coaches that match you scheme and philosophy.

Chaney is a great example when you hire outside your scheme and philosophy.

And news flash.....there isn't alot of coaches in the south that are running our schemes and philosophy. The south has gone spread heavy.

This hire should be alot like Enos in that its a match in scheme and style.

Right? Geez!

Devil's advocate here: Maybe the guy is a very good recruiter. A lot of recruiting is personality and likability as relationships/bonds are forged. Maybe a coach with strong ties to the midwest proves to be a blessing in disguise, and we pull in several studs wanting to play in the SEC and in a warmer climate, without having to go head-to-head with Bama, LSU, and Georgia.

from reddit...
quote:

The bills this year didn't have much to work with up front and massively out performed expectations. If this guy is the one responsible for that then I'm okay with it. I just hope this guy can recruit.

Faith in Bert and all that.

quote:

He's young, and I personally think that being promoted to an NFL offensive line coach as quickly as he was might have been slightly overwhelming. Especially without the oversight of someone who knows what they're doing, at least as far as the offensive line is concerned (which is definitely not an area of specialty for Rex Ryan).
Moving back down to the college ranks at a more established program, where he has a very successful mentor makes a lot of sense. I also get the feeling that Bret wanted to bring in someone young that he could groom and show the ropes.
It makes sense for both parties, and eventually I'm sure Anderson will move back into the NFL and see success, and might even return to the college ranks as an offensive coordinator for a power run program. He's young and has a long career of him, and this move is probably a smart one if you're considering longer term success.

from a Michigan fan:
quote:

Michigan grad, wonderful guy. he hasn't had many opportunities to recruit at a high level but he will be lights out in that respect.

One thing I can't question Bert on is his ability to hire talented assistants (other than Chaney). In a couple years everyone questioning this hire will be talking about what we need to pay Anderson to keep him from taking other jobs.

frick Bielema, that dude doesn't know shite about hiring an OL coach. I mean, I know he's consistently put OL in the NFL and trotted out some of the best OLs in the country, but he really should've run this hire by us first. No southern ties? god Bielema is a moron. We all know the midwest doesn't produce good O-linemen.

Nevermind. I guess it is a zero sum game.

Player Development is more important than raw recruiting.

I have no problem with this hire...

It does make me say, "WHAT?" when I think of CBB's comments about a "Chance to get better" than what we had. We shall see.

But with your comment above, why not both? What happened to a coach who can develop and recruit lights out at 350k a year or more? Where oh where have they gone, lol

I'm not sure that there ARE any coaches that are amazing recruiters and amazing developers.

I can't think of any really. Not at the position level tbh.

Just popping in to represent the fan base that really doesn't know if its a good hire or not. Just not that knowledgeable concerning assistant coaches all over the country.

If they come across as personable in their interviews, that's usually a good sign they can recruit.

Not sure if it's important for a good recruiter to be from a particular area, when you look at Pittman signing guys from Hawaii, Wisconsin, Florida, Colorado, Missouri, etc.

I think it's important to hire someone who wants to be at Arkansas, i.e. Shannon, Ash sucked because it wasn't a good fit for them from the start.

If he's personable, is excited to be in Arkansas with this staff, and is a solid technician, he should do well.

little things, but I like Kurt's enthusiasm and how he's more active on Twitter than Sam was. Seems like that will help with recruiting

“I’ve been around a lot of great coaches and Kurt is one of them. Kurt can coach anywhere in the country and at any level. He’s smart, loyal, tough and players will love to play for him. He’s a guy that gives you his word and you can take it to the bank. I’m proud to have coached with him and the Arkansas offensive linemen are to lucky to have him. I know how big of a hire this is for coach Bielema and I can promise he got the right guy.” – Rex Ryan, Buffalo Bills Head Coach

Anyone remember Ryan making fun of CBB a few months back? I gotta search for this...
