I could potentially have the same job (different companies) with similar pay. I would have the choice to live in NWA or El Dorado.

Here's where things get weird...I'm from NWA, live in South Louisiana but kinda despise how yankee-fied things have gotten in NWA. My wife thinks I'm off my rocker. Your opinions (serious and non-serious) are welcome.

It's pretty damn conservative politically outside of Fayetteville

I work in Springdale and everyone there was born and raised Springdale except me

Unless you are working for one of the big companies it still pretty authentic Arkansas in my experience

You'd definitely be an outlier. You could probably make your dollar stretch longer in El Dorado and if you've come to enjoy Louisiana you'd be pretty close.

For the same money, I'd strongly consider El Dorado too. commuting has become an absolute nightmare and I've turned down a handful of jobs due to it and basically shut down a profitable business because of the nightmare logistics became in Benton County because of the traffic delays.

Short answer - no.

Live where you want to live.

As someone born and raised in El Dorado and educated in Fayetteville.

Yes, you'd be absolutely fricking nuts to want to live there. The town is in serious decline and there isn't much of anything there. If you want to just live in the damn woods and hunt and fish the whole time, sure, it's good. If you want anything else, no, it's bad. Crime is more of a problem in El Dorado and the surrounding Union County area. It doesn't really have much to offer and it's a long way from any area that does.

Lucky you for having the option. I would move back to NWA tomorrow, if I could ever convince the wife.

I grew up in Magnolia and have great memories between Magnolia, El Dorado, Camden, driving all the way to Haynesville for beer ect. I still go back to see family and Hunt. Hunting is about the only positive I currently have to say about Southwest Ark. Every time I go home and drive through all the small towns, all I see is a decline. If I were to move back, I would probably move closer to T-town. I would have a hard time turning down NWA, but I would have to pick a more secluded outside are and commute in.

I lived in Ruston, LA once, and loved it, but El Dorado would suck (I do have great friends from ED)

It really depends on what you want. Not everyone wants to live like a law professor in Fayetteville sipping cappuccino and reading the Wall Street Journal; there are other parts of the State where good folks reside and for the most part they are what makes the Natural State the great place that is. Some of them, including attorneys I know, live in El Dorado and love it.

Don't let the highfalutin city slickers get you down man and NEVER forget your hillbilly roots. Union County has a good turkey and deer population--far superior to what they have in Washington County. Remember, it's about huntin', fishin', and lovin' every day. LINK

yep, John Grisham would write about "El Dorado lawyers" before he would "Fayetteville lawyers"

It depends. Your kids (if you have any) will be exposed to way more good stuff in NWA. El Dorado has a nice little downtown and the Murphy Oil scholarships.

NWA isn't as "yankeefied" as some people like to pretend it is. Most of the people here are still originally from Arkansas. Others move in from Oklahoma and Texas. LOTS of Texans, both the Austin-refugee types and the DFW transplants. Yes, there are large quantities of people from the midwest who have moved here, but they chose to move here. I don't feel like Benton County is the Deep South, but I wouldn't want to live in most parts of the Deep South anyway.

The natural environment within an hour of NWA is better than anything for at least 350 miles around. The next best nature is in western and SW Arkansas. I deer hunt every year. I float the rivers several times a year. I'm not much of a fisherman, but there are opportunities for that all over the place, bass to cold-water trout fishing.

Plus I think the climate is better here. Less humid and milder summers.

Honestly, there's more and better outdoor activities in NWA than in the south. If you're checking boxes it beats El Dorado in every category except winter weather; and it still doesn't snow that much in NWA. Seeing a gorgeous view of the hills when I walk out my front door every morning beats anything El Dorado has to offer.

If the Minute Man is still open in Eldo, then Eldo > NWA

They've got spudnuts in El Dorado.

I've got family in the area there. I've got a few friends in the oil business. A few friends who work for Murphy Oil and Murphy USA. Know a couple lawyers as well. I've spent some time there.

There isn't much to do in the town, but it's not far from Monroe, Shreveport, Texarkana, or Little Rock. A good job is a good job. It doesn't matter where you live. It's more about you. What are you going to be happy with? Pros and cons to both for you I'm sure.

Traffic in Eldo is going to be behind four cars at a stop light on Northwest Avenue. Traffic in NWA is being on I49 pissed off you're late for something.

Either way, where you live is more about what you make of it. If you're an inside person, then it doesn't matter where you live. If you enjoy traveling, then it doesn't matter. If you like fine dining, then it does. If you like bigger metros, then it matters.

I love to hunt and fish.... love being in "the woods". I enjoy visiting NWA on occasion but there is no way I would want to live there. I'm a country boy and I love my country life.... I like El Dorado... It's home.... it has it's problems but you could say that about any place on earth.
I agree with you about Fayetteville taking on kind of a "Yankee Feel". Maybe it just seems that way because I don't visit enough to understand the demographics but it gives off that vibe to outsiders.

El Dorado isn't so bad, crime isn't as bad as they make it sound..... nowhere near Pine Bluff bad!!!! Lol!

As far as schools and the like, Parkers Chapel is consistently one of the top high schools in the state. You might think about that when looking for housing.
