Isn't that a fairly common theme with high school athletes in Arkansas? I've been led to believe that many programs don't have strength programs.

Look at the Cantrell kid we just took. He's a physical specimen and he comes from Roland, hands down one of the worst everything in football in Oklahoma. If you got it, you got it.

So is Roland solidly hog country? I'd think that having Fort Smith just to their east would scare them all west.

Considering Ft. Fresh isn't solidly Hog country, I would have to think that Roland wasn't either. The kid seems pumped to be a Hog however. He's been retweeting up a storm about Hog stuff the last few days. Also, Otis went and interviewed him yesterday and he said he would say no to OU and OSU if they tried to come after him.

ETA: Here's a blurb from the article that Otis just posted about him:

As far as the Razorbacks, what first attracted Cantrell to them?

“How close it is,” Cantrell said. “I really love the fan base. The fans are the most loyal fans that's what I really like about them.”

Roland is about 10 minutes from Fort Smith so Cantrell said he is exposed to fans from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and others frequently. “It's just a cluster of all of them,” Cantrell said.

Meh, it seems that way because so many people from Oklahoma cross the state line each morning to go to work.

There's a solid mix between OU/OSU/ARK

I graduated from Roland High School and it really is mixed when it comes to Ark/OU/OSU fandom. I would have to say that there are more OSU fans than any other. Most of the kids from Roland that decide to attend a 4 year college go to OSU.

So are you saying Arkansas high schools, for most, employ strength programs? I don't think an OK player is germain to the discussion.

If you want to say a kid should be strong enough on their own accord, outside of the high school athletic program, that's another thing. But its not any kind of indicator as to if a kid will blow up physically when they get in a real strength/nutrition program.

Pine Bluff SHOULD be able to put together a decent S&C program...They probably have one of the better coaches in the state as well

If Pine Bluff produced Basil Shabazz, Willie Roaf, Torii Hunter, etc etc etc

Then lifting weights shouldn't be an issue. Maybe the difference we're seeing is a socioeconomic problem where steroids and supplements are more readily available in other areas of the country and those areas have higher avg. wages and more people and more opportunities to sell a lil something to afford a HGH and Clear regiment.

Damn them for busting the Monticello roid ring.

Every school in the state has weight training equipment. How it is used could be the issue, some schools only lift during the off-season, summer is optional, lifting during the season would vary.

The difference between college and HS would be the availability of a nutrition program available to the athletes, food plus what to eat when, etc. as well as an actual regimen for lifting through out the year.

Can't be emphasized enough. The food they give our athletes is designed specifically for their goals. We all should be so lucky to have to put NO thought into such an effective diet (expensive too).
