It's those small government rural sheriffs that like the revenue the permit fee generates for their department.

You don't have a problem with the law or with him having a gun in his car?

Law is and has always been idiotic. You can walk around with a gun on your hip all day without a permit but as soon as you sit down in a car you're a criminal. All about the permit revenue.

I don't have a problem with that specific part of the law.

The largest screamers aren't the small government rural sheriffs. They don't make enough off the permits to matter.

Over half the counties in Alabama have populations under 50,000. They like the money, but it won't make or break them. On the other hand, the big urban counties make millions. They're the ones that have both the financial interest and political might to put up the fight.

Posted about it in the Rant. The sheriff's of this state are fighting a change in the law tooth and nail because THEY GET THE MONEY FROM PERMITS. They always cite officer safety reasons. It is the money. I'm an officer and I can tell you that if I have a car full of gang bangers and none of them have a permit I do NOT assume there is notva gun in the car with them.

The statute for those interested:

Section 13A-11-73

Permit to carry pistol in vehicle or concealed on person - Required; possession of unloaded pistol in motor vehicle.

(a) Except on land under his or her control or in his or her own abode or his or her own fixed place of business, no person shall carry a pistol in any vehicle or concealed on or about his or her person without a permit issued under Section 13A-11-75(a)(1) or recognized under Section 13A-11-85.

(b) Except as otherwise prohibited by law, a person legally permitted to possess a pistol, but who does not possess a valid concealed weapon permit, may possess an unloaded pistol in his or her motor vehicle if the pistol is locked in a compartment or container that is in or affixed securely to the vehicle and out of reach of the driver and any passenger in the vehicle.

No, but you can open carry so how stupid is that. They are actually trying to get the law changed so you can have it in your car without a permit. It is just another way for the government to frick someone out of 10 dollars. The bill of rights is a pistol permit. You do not have to have permission from a state to exercise a right.

The law is opposite here in Georgia. You can pull up next to an officer in your car and twirl your gun around on your finger and it's perfectly legal. But if you get out with it in public and don't have a permit you are illegal.

A LEO with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Dept. told me today that the law was recently changed, that it is now legal to carry a handgun in one's vehicle without having a permit.

Bill SB14 was sponsored by Sen. Gerald Allen, R, the bill’s sponsor Who argued "A vehicle is extension of your home and you should have the right to defend yourself in your vehicle without having to buy a pistol permit."

It passed the Senate easily, but the House Public Safety Committee chair blocked it from a hearing there.

That. Its been pushed but isn't law yet. And exactly right on revenue for SD. Each county sheriff sets their own prices. I.e.. Jeff co is like 7.50 yearly and I know some counties that charge 20 yearly

If he is going around telling people they don't need a permit, he is going to find himself in a hell of a jam when one of the people he advised ends up arrested. As others have said, the bill you references did not become law.

Okay, I'll tell him that too.
