Would Love To See Ruggs Return Punts

Diggs is struggling with punt return. He's prone to let punts bounce and roll, and if he does catch one I can't recall him ever doing anything with it.
When you think back on what a weapon Eddie Jackson, Cyrus, and Javy were every week on punt returns it would be nice to get some production again from our PR.
With the way things are looking on defense I'm thinking Bama is going to need every weapon they can get this season, and right now Bama is getting zero production on punt returns.

I agree. Diggs is sure handed but he's not a threat to house one. No wiggle and it takes him a while to get up to speed.
That said, if Ruggs or Marks bobbles it in practice then I'd rather just have Diggs out there fair catching them all over that.

Either Ruggs or Jeudy or Foster.
Diggs is not the answer, and from what I recall, Marks didn't look too hot either.
Being a good PR is a special ability that has nothing to do with pure speed, agility, etc.
it's more about having great vision, timing, anticipation, etc.
That's why Eddie Jackson was so good
Saban putting Eddie Jackson at returner was perfect. He usually gets the right guy there, it just takes a while to figure it out. At this point, Diggs is a cop-out

I wonder if they've ever given Tony Brown a shot?

Robert Foster would have my vote. Dude is a rocket

Diggs is obviously there because he is the safest option. I think we have guys more capable of breaking big returns, but if they don't secure the ball every time, it really doesn't matter. That's an easy spot to turn the ball over if a guy is just a little shaky.

Javier Arenas was a wet dream of a punt returner. Dude was good for about 20 yards every time. I miss that. Not to mention his corner blitzing..miss Javy.

Javy was the best punt returner the program has ever had. He was an artist back there. He had that little delay that would always cause the first defender to miss.

Saw Javy next to Pruitt every time they cut to him last night.
Was just thinking last night, damn we might have a DB come close to leading the team in sacks as much as they bring the heat with Fitz and Brown.
Javy was only 1.5 behind Dareus in 2009 with 5 sacks as a DB...

Robert Foster. He's got dynamic speed and good vision, and having him as returner would guarantee he gets touches every game.

Yes sir. We have saw Saban be conservative there in the past until he trusts a guy not to muff it.

I disagree. Javy was great, but David Palmer was better.

Disagree. And the numbers do, too
Palmer: 4
Arenas: 7
And while we're on the topic, I think Eddie Jackson had better vision than both of them. His numbers would've been up there if he'd been the return man for 3 years.

Palmer was only in Ttown for 3 years.

Eddie Jackson, Prothro, Arenas, Palmer - all great returners. Maze wasn't too shabby either.
It'd be nice to have a real threat fielding punts again

Its just my opinion, and both were very good, but Palmer was better.

1. 14.1 Javier Arenas (125 returns, 1,752 yards)
2. 13.4 Harry Gilmer (83 returns, 1,119 yards)
3. 12.7 Marquis Maze (56 returns, 711 yards)
4. 12.5 Cyrus Jones (54 returns, 673 yards)
5. 10.9 Christion Jones (66 returns, 719 yards)
6. 10.6 Tony Nathan (46 returns, 489 yards)
7. 10.4 David Palmer (83 returns, 866 yards)
That's the Alabama career punt return average list. Interestingly, for all the crap Bobby Williams took, four of the top five were coached by him. Eddie Jackson didn't have enough career returns to make the list but was averaging a staggering 23 yards per return last season before he was hurt.

They also play a ton of first string on special teams now. That makes a difference

True. I'm partial to Javy because I just loved his demeanor and the way he played the game all around. I was a bit young when Palmer was playing - not yet a teenager when he first got to campus - and don't have a great recollection of him like I do Arenas.
