Someone actually thinks there was a possibility he would stay at Alabama for 5 years?

Seriously?

The question is totally lost here. The OP was simply asking why burn the redshirt for a few meaningless handoffs?

Was it an oversight? Part of a plan?

It just seems interesting that we decided to randomly burn it for a few meaningless snaps that did nothing to help him prepare for the future. Doesn’t mean it was a poor decision or a smart one. It’s just curious that it happened that way.

Just for clarification, his redshirt isn't burned. You don't have to be in your first year to redshirt.

They played him in 5 games, the fifth one he did nothing but hand the ball off a few times and throw 1 or 2 passes. That is the point. They used his ability to redshirt over a few hand offs. It was a question. Not a judgement. I thought people might want to discuss this. Some of you guys make this board seem like Tide Fans.

At least the SEC Rant can be entertaining, some of you are stereotypical Bammers, I swear

It's just not much to go on at this point. Did Lia want to be redshirted? After Tua went down he was second in command and at that point was a twisted ankle from starting.

Mac got redshirted but he was at least third in the pecking order behind Tua and Jalen. It still doesn't mean he will be here or any other college for a 5th year. Redshirting is not near the pressing issue these days now that the transfer portal has put simply leaving your school in the passing lane.

Well now he has one less year if he transfers. Silver lining I guess.

AJ got redshirted in 2009 when he was McElroys backup.

Again, you’re speaking emotionally. I’m talking logic here. He still has the ability to redshirt.

Now I’m going to give you the answer you don’t want to hear. Taulia will never be a starting QB at Alabama and the fact that he played in five meaningless games means he can make use of that redshirt when he transfers out.

I can see both sides of the argument. Personally, I’m glad he played. Time will tell, but I don’t think this will bite us in the arse.

I get more pissed off at the guys who redshirt and then go pro after their sophomore season because they are that good

Why do you think that’s what I don’t want to hear?

If that is the case then so be it. He didn’t look very good to me in the little action I saw him play anyway, which is why it didn’t make sense to me.

It was never needed. Either he will start next year or transfer.

Agreed.

I get that he was the backup but he was just coming in for a few plays and handing the ball off. If Mac got hurt and Taulia had to play, I highly doubt he'd be thinking "thank god they put me in to hand it off three times last week, now I'm ready".

You really think it wasn’t endlessly discussed when it happened?

Really?

Absent new information, nothing is different from November. The staff decided to play him, some fans think it was stupid, some think it was a reasonable action.

Most don’t give a flying frick one way or another because 2019 is over and it won’t be a POTENTIAL issue until the end of the 2022 season.

that's exactly the point, and I noted that after the game. I was railed on pretty good, but emotions were pretty high at the time so I just dropped it.

You never know what will happen or how things will work out. I mean, it's possible Taulia (isn't Lia a girl's name?) plays because of unforseen injuries or transfers, then he plays lights out and becomes the starting qb and never relinquished that position. To lose a year for a few handoffs is just stupid.

If that happens those handoffs won't matter.

A player is NFL draft eligible after his class completes their 3rd year of college, not their 3rd year of playing.

Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston were both redshirted and then went pro after their second seasons on the field.

it would absolutely matter if he's good enough to be the starting quarterback but, like Najee Harris, wants to improve his NFL status with one more year.

The hand offs in that 5th game cost him a year's eligibility. We can try to spin it away but it's a fact.

I was more in the camp that he did need to be ready because there was a reasonable chance he would be needed against Auburn or perhaps in the bowl game. I wanted him to go in there and get at least a quarter of running the offense with the whole playbook open. He did need the experience if he was suddenly thrust into the starting role. However, going in the game and handing it off a few times did nothing for anyone except make this year count against his eligibility.
