I’m Walt Maddox, Mayor of the City of Tuscaloosa. Being Mayor of my hometown is one of the greatest honors of my life and has afforded me the privilege of serving a place I love and people I believe in.

Today, I am announcing the formation of a political committee to help me explore the possibility of running for Governor in 2018. The decision to form the committee was easy. By taking this step, I am complying with Alabama’s election and ethics laws and continuing our tradition of transparency.

The more difficult decision of running for Governor lies ahead, and I take seriously my responsibilities as a husband, father and mayor. For those that I love and serve, they deserve thoughtful answers.

Wherever this path may lead, it is undeniable, that as Alabamians, we all deserve better.

Good deal. I'd vote for him. He's done awesome things for the city of Tuscaloosa, and just released a 4-year plan to revitalize Tuscaloosa's most poverty stricken area.

Sadly, I fear people won't vote for him because he'll run as a Democrat. Just once, I would like for people to vote for someone who wishes to serve the people, and not the parties.

It isn't just the parties. It's the people he'll have to bow to as a Democrat.

Nancy Worley and Joe Reed run the Democratic party in Alabama. If you want to be a candidate, you have to answer to them - but if you answer to them then you aren't winning a statewide election.

I suspect he'll withdraw without ever formally entering the race.

The Republican party was teetering on the verge of being in a very similar situation with Mike Hubbard, but his felony convictions took care of that issue.

We need some people to run as independents. Drain the Montgomery swamp

It cost Robert Bentley roughly 7.5 million to get elected governor in 2010 (the last time there wasn't an incumbent).
The 2018 election will cost a whole lot more.

You simply can't raise that kind of money without party resources behind them so unless it is someone with YellaFella type of money and they're willing to part with a lot of it, a serious independent run isn't going to happen.

Battle out of Huntsville is as close to that as you will get. There has not been a governor from the north end of the state since I can remember. As odd as it sounds he is far enough removed from the wheeling and dealing of the Gump to change the way things get done down there. At least I hope so.

Would love Battle, unless he's done something bad I don't know about.
