Northport Diner is still open.

Guess you haven't been by there in a few weeks. It's closed down and has a large dumpster out front. It is being renovated. The guy that started the diners opened up some restaurants in Dothan called Blue Plate, and I think he is opening one of those up in the Nport Diner. I would guess he is doing the same to the 15th St location, but I do not know for sure.

I have seen blue plates in Dothan. It is one heck of a drive from Dothan to Tuscaloosa.

I wonder if those Northbrook(?) apartments are still there in that area.

Northbrook is still there.

Doesn't the guy who owns the Cypress Inn also own the Northport & 15th St. Diner? He did years ago, but he could've sold them off. He had the Taylorville Diner too, but it closed probably 10 years ago.

Yes Drew Henson still owns Cypress Inn and both diners. I had heard about the Blue Plate too so either we hear the same rumors from the same people or there might be some truth to it.....

I understand the 15th street location (and all the other businesses in that strip center) are not going to have leases renewed or extended. The owner of the buildings wants to tear down and do some kind of apartments.

Like we need any more apartments.

More apartments? FAP [ON]

jk.

I know the student demographics are changing but what is with the apartment boom in Tuscaloosa?

Are the dorms that bad or is Tuscaloosa becoming a more young adult friendly city?

It's reaching the max point for sure. The majority of the dorms have been built since 2005. Some of it is tornado related, as Cedar Crest was almost all student rental homes and they are gone.

The student population doubled. People need a place to live.

Can we reconstruct Rose Towers and stuff people in there?

Beyond that, I wonder what UA's long term dorm plan is.

Do the math - apartments are big time money, even the unrented ones, which you can write off the losses on to offset your income in other areas, like garbage collection, retail space, and construction...

ETA: Steamers was always slow on the refills on all-you-can-eat crawdad night...I figured they sized me up when I walked in the door. And, the name itself didn't conjure pleasant images in my mind.

What was the name of the redneck booty bar that was there before Steamers?

I can remember when it was Christopher's restaurant, but I'm old. Never ate there but it always smelled good from soccer practice across the street.

I remember the redneck bar, but forget the name of it. Want to say it had a Tropical or Bahama theme, possibly in the name as well.

They have already finished one Presidential Village tower there with another set to be complete by next fall. Also building a second rec center overlooking the river between the two towers.

We will have 40k students soon. That's why apartments and condo's are popping up everywhere.

The University kicks most students out of the dorms after their freshman year. Happened to all of my friends who wanted to stay in the dorms.

I would rather see us cap enrollment at 37.5k and start to raise admissions standards.
