Correct me if I'm wrong but clearing our compliance office doesn't mean anything with regards to whether the NCAA is going to issue him a show cause does it? It just means they approved Saban to offer him a position right?

I agree but think once other coaches hear that Alabama cleared him to be hired, other schools would be willing to take the chance. If you need a DC and are willing to take the chance, why not.

Plus, coaching for your alma mater isn’t necessarily as great as you might think it is. What if things don’t work out, the fans trash you like they do CBO and CPG here, and you get fired? Kind of tarnishes the good memories from your youth.

I would add to your point that not everyone has positive memories of their alma mater - all kinds of things can happen in your life that make your college experience different than the "best years of your life" stereotype. Not everyone gets to spend their college years having fun. I don't look back on my time as a student at UA with any nostalgia at all and I have much worse things to say about my time as an employee there. If Bama has an inroad with Schumann, it's because of his relationship with Saban, not because he went to UA back in the day.

I'd say that most people do though.

One thing to think about as anyone who wants to be a head coach. AD and Presidents are making those decisions along with input from boosters and others. Getting your name out there and being in the media discussion is important to that it's not the only thing of course. Schumann getsno attention by the media outside or during the broadcast. If anything Will gets more. Watch any georgia game screen time is Kirby, Monkey and Will. Any shoot of Schumann is just the defense as a group. He will be a bigger face just like Pete was at bama.

yeah he cleared the schools compliance.

That’s what I gathered he doesn’t want to be an analyst or support role.

The first idea shot across the bow was Pruitt come in as CO DC with Golding and turned it down.

I understand Pruitt not wanting to share the DC duties but I also understand Saban wanting that as a protection should an NCAA show cause end up coming for Pruitt down the road.

JMO but no way is Nick going to hire JP as the DC without knowing he is free from the NCAA.

If I were a head coach, in the rarest of rare exception would co-head coordinators work well. No 2 coaches ever 100% agree. Get the man you believe in and give him the reins. Good for Pruitt. If Saban actually thought about doing this, oh brother....

The tone of this thread is starting to feel like a we’re gonna have to spin the new hire because he will be coming from school like UtSA and we don’t know who the frick he is. ??

Not sure what this means. But does Pruitt really not understand that he's not in a position to make demands if he wants to coach in college again?

It means Pruitt won't work in tandem with Golding. I wouldn't either. Apparently Pruitt woke Saban up about Pete's shortcomings.

Pruitt and Golding would have been complete opposites. Saban's loyalty to trying to keep Golding was mind boggling. Can everyone see he sucked but Saban?

I think that it was pretty obvious that Saban was tired of the turnover, and wanted an up and comer that would stay for more than 1 or 2 years. Unfortunately that also meant that he had to develop him, and it just didn't work out. Despite what people on this board say, Golding did show some inklings of promise, but then regressed horribly in 2022, which is why he is gone.

So far the biggest shock to me in this thread is that Saban was actually trying to keep Golding as a DC. W.T.F.???

I don't see it that way. If he saw a way to potentially keep Golding's recruiting chops on staff while having Pruitt be the actual defensive play caller why not give it a shot? Worst they can do is say not interested.

Give it to JP and let's get BUSY!

If they don't think he's going to get in trouble with the NCAA then it's a no brainer to me.

Compare the talent on defense from the 2016-2017 roster to this past group is like night and day.

I have no inside info at all, but it seems to me Golding could draw up a defense very well. He just couldn't explain it well, or adjust on the fly. We generally had decent (not great, but decent) defensive performances in the post-season, which to me indicates when he had time to plan and could drill assignments over and over, it worked better.

The issues generally came during the season, when other teams broke tendencies or showed things we hadn't seen before on film. During those times the complexity of our defense became a liability due to his inability to communicate or adjust.

The 2022 version of Alabama SHOULD have featured a generational defense, with talent, experience, and depth across the board. Instead we continued to wallow in mediocrity (by our standards, anyway). Seeing Georgia stifle a team like Tennessee who embarrassed us had to be a gut punch for Saban.
