define gruesome injuries? and if you are going to take knee you do it in the end zone. If injury is a concern then he does not need to be on punt or kickoff return

This is somewhat a dishonest statement, hes been hurt and had some pretty gruesome injuries in his career here that have kept him off the field. As far as the topic of this thread, it was dumb to bring it out, but in a game that is pretty much under control, and with his history of injuries, I dont think taking a knee there was a bad decision. Saved himself a meaningless hit, and kept the football secure.

Gruesome injuries? He had a dislocated shoulder his first year and redshirted that year. He had an ankle sprain for a week or two in fall camp. That is it, no gruesome injuries and no significant time missed. Like I said, nothing against the guy, wish he was the next jerry rice, but it's becoming obvious he will never be anything more than an average player. Is what it is. Glad we are recruiting well at the position and hope Black can add some good depth this year and next.

How did I miss this play? I must've been pretty drunk by then.

not sure how anyone could have missed it unless you were at the head.

Actually, it was a bad play. And a stupid play. And a cowardly play.

I want to give the kid the benefit of the doubt. Our coach does a lot of things I question too. Like not challenging plays or keeping timeouts. Our special teams isn't always the best in coverage so I wonder why doesn't he just tell them to kick it out of the endzone and take it at the 25 in stead of playing coverage and them getting at the 20...Maybe nick told him to do it.

someone above who may have been at the game said NS chewed him out.

Pardon me. What word would you use to describe taking a knee deep in your own territory to avoid taking a hit???? Pray tell.

I thought they showed Saban having words with him during the broadcast, too?

Brainfart. Confused.

I don't think Chris Black is a coward. I don't think his team mates or coaches think that either... I don't know that for a fact, but I doubt Chris Black would have been back there if the coaches thought he was cowardly.

We can agree to disagree.

--Saban says coaches take some blame for Chris Black taking a kickoff out of the endzone only to kneel at the 7-yard line. Said it was based on the coaching and timing of the game. Calls it a teachable moment.

I'll never forget that. I was screaming at the TV for him to pick the damn ball up, watching the ref just staring at it. Man that would have been horrible.

But then again, maybe we would have won?

Yeah, because there are kids who are going to make the best college football team in the country while being scared to take a hit in a game.

Use a little common sense please.

Simply untrue. He may not have been as productive as his career was sought out to be, but he's shown the ability to turn a 2-3 yard pass into a long TD. Early on in his career, it seemed like he would have a few good plays that showed his explosiveness late in the game. I understand he hasn't lived up to his potential, but its ludicrous to say he's not a good player.

I'm sometimes wonder what emphasis is ever put on special teams in practice

At the fan day open practice, Adam Griffith and a couple other backups sat and talked the entire time. JK Scott did some interesting stretches to keep himself occupied. Hopefully that's not indicative of their normal approach to special teams, but honestly how surprised would you be if it was at this point?

If we're talking Chris Black I can only speak for my own opinion. I wouldn't say he isn't a good player. But there's a reason before the season I'd name off the really talented guys and then say "And of course Chris Black". He's a solid player, I just don't think he's better than our other 4 main WRs or Howard/Drake in the passing game, at this point. That doesn't mean anything negative against him, we're just loaded.

I can agree with this. I think Black has shown the ability to be in the WR rotation, but hasn't played consistently enough to be considered a starter or a guy defenses have to plan against. I'm much more excited about Ridley
