Is Bobby Williams the guy that coaches the kickers? His official title says Special Teams Coordinator - I looked in his background and the guy has zero experience kicking as a player or coach. I know he gets a lot of shite for ruining our kickers, but who is the guy that actually coaches the kickers??

From what I've read, the kickers just kind of do their own thing during practice. They don't have a coach, per se. They then go to kicking camps during the offseason.

They don't exist in college. I wish the NCAA would allow an additional staff assistant.

Why not have a GA coach the position?

This is correct. They work with S&C quite a bit, there might be a non-coach staff member that "coaches", other than that its just someone who helps them as far as getting and retrieving balls, etc...

Besides actual practice scenarios

It should be the golf coach. Hitting a golf ball and kicking a football are very similar and mostly mental.

Thanks for the info - maybe they should get a kicker GA...

I feel like this should be stickied, so that every time we miss a FG or have a bad punt there aren't 10 new threads about firing Bobby Williams. It seems to me like he just drew the short straw of having that title.

Well, our TEs haven't been anything to write home about, and it isn't like Howard doesn't have the physical tools.

Our special teams problems don't start and end with the kickers.

I have always heard that Bobby Williams doesn't coach any aspect of special teams. I've heard he works with tight ends, and also that he handles special teams formations on the sidelines on Gameday. Does anyone know if that's true? There are even people in this thread that are saying that neither he or anyone else actually coaches the kickers. I feel like I have also heard Saban say before that special teams is a staff-wide effort, and not just one persons job.

My point is, if this is true, then I feel like Bobby Williams deserves a break, and we actually have a systematic issue with special teams where there isn't one expert that can coach this aspect of the game. When the secondary sucked, Saban didn't just tell all the coaches to put their heads together and figure it out, he hired Mel Tucker. Why not do the same for special teams?

Considering the defense Tucker had at Chicago, hiring him was not a sure thing. He has made a world of difference.
