“He’s a young guy,” Michael Penix Jr. said. “He actually reclassified, came in early, he wanted to be able to spend a year in the offense. Seeing me and seeing how I operated in the offense and stuff like that. I did my best to just show him as much of the offense as I could and continue to encourage him.”

Michael Penix is confident that what he saw in practice will one day translate onto the field.

“His confidence is out of the roof, man. He’s going to be an amazing player at Alabama. That’s definitely going to be a household name there pretty soon, and he has so much talent at a young age that I saw as soon as he came in and just the way he was able to pick up the offense, and pick up on just seeing (reading) the defenses, and reacting to the plays, it was amazing to see. So, I know his ceiling is very high.”

DeBear speaking at the Senior Bowl:

Coach, why did you bring Austin Mack to Alabama ?

"His skill set, all the tools he brings, the arm talent,... he has a really great head on his shoulders, for him to do what he did last year, and reclassify and come in as young as he was and learn the offense as fast as anyone I've ever seen. He just has to continue to develop, and he sees the challenge ahead as an opportunity, and hes excited about this opportunity, and he's excited to be here, and we are excited to have him here."

Ryan Williams :

"Im looking forward to working with Austin Mack. He has experience watching a national championship caliber team, (QB) and he can throw the ball really well. I think with our connection we'll score a lot of Touchdowns and Win A Lot of Games."

Reading that and seeing Mack’s highlights really makes me feel comfortable about our depth at QB. It will be fun to watch during spring practice.

I would be stunned if very good QB play didn’t emerge from somebody in this group. Maybe my area of least concern

For some reason I think freshman # 12 I think his name is lonergan, will be a sleeper for playing time next year. He has impressed me with his very little playing time I've seen so far.

The first huge test for DeBear IMO will be to resist the pressure to build an offense around Milroe to appease the locker room.

Whichever QB can run his offense the way it is designed to be run, and distribute the ball to ALL the skill players, and protect the football should be the QB.

If you dont like it theres the door. It's time to reinvigorate this program with a big dose of "nobody is guaranteed a job."

If Milroe is that guy, Great.

This season we actually are going to have difference makers at RB. I dont want a QB stealing 20 carries from Justice and Jam per game.

May the best QB win no matter who it is, but please pick a QB that can run this offense to it's potential. Really big test here IMO to make a statement the HC is in charge, and will make the best decisions for the team no matter what public opinion thinks.

Competition at every position group will be awesome to see, but especially within this group. I dont have a clue who will win the QB1 job but they will have worked their arse off and earned it.

We lost a receiver who was vocal that he didn't believe in our QB. I don't the locker room is behind one QB or another. I think they just want to win. Last year, Milroe won the team over and that was very important to Saban. I don't think it will play out this way this year. I also think that Simpson and Lonergan staying indicates they feel they will have a chance to compete. I think the QB will be whomever CKD feels will win the most games for us. I'm really excited to hear how the spring practice goes.

Which receiver said he didn’t believe in our quarterback? Did he tell you personally? There hasn’t been any public comments from receivers about Milroe.

Yea by all accounts Milroe is incredibly hard working, a leader, and beloved by the team. It’s why I’ll be Really excited if someone beats him out. Probably means the guy killed it

If Milroe starts in means he really improved in running an offense (which is certainly possible) or nobody stepped up and took the job

Oh my god you Simpsonites are such an insufferable bunch.

Jalen Milroe could play like Vince Young during a season and you’d still say we had someone better on the bench. Be happy.

He wasn't great last year. The Milroe-is-awesome-because-he-made-some-big-plays-and-muh-heisman-odds people are worse than those who are pointing out his deficiencies.

Both sides are insufferable. One side won't allow any criticism of Jalen at all and the other can't admit that while there are definitely holes in his skillset, he also has some things he does really well. The truth is somewhere in the middle like it usually is.

Yep, didn't believe he would have the stats he wanted to have for the draft next year with the QBs we have.

Nope, didn't tell me. He did tell Pete Thamel.

The sad thing is he would probably have put up better numbers in our offense than he will at UT.

The worst fans are the fans that loved LANK then when we lost they deemed it to be stupid AF and wish they never heard it again.

The truth is somewhere between the two, yes. But I think it's skewed a little more toward Milroe is going to lose the starting job to a qb that understands basic reads.

We know Milroe is incapable of reading defenses and making short/intermediate throws. We know he was bad at it last year and we know he cannot get better. He is where he is.

What we do know is that the players that haven't played any or much at all are capable of all of those things and more. Those are the guys we have to count on.

If Milroe is the starter we will be bad because he is bad and will always be bad.
