Why can't Bama have a home run hire in basketball? That's a load of crap. It's not an issue of can we, it's a question of are we willing to spend the money to do it. Everyone thought they were crazy to pay Saban what they paid him to come in 07. Now looking back, that move changed how coaches are paid in college football. We have the money to do something like that in basketball, but it's a matter of UA deciding whether or not it's worth it to go that far.

So what you're telling me is we should hire Prohm over Marshall?...

I wouldn't refer to Miami in the 80's as an example either. Schnellenberger jumpstarted one of the most successful football programs in history and left all the tools for JJ. We didn't do anything to aid an unproven coach like Schnelly did for Johnson.

Based off the decision to hire Grant for that sum of money i'd imagine there is a push to be good in that field. Hopefully we're willing to at least push for 3.5ish while we can. This is arguably one of the best times to improve the program by putting money into it.

Why the hell does Pearson's name keep coming up? Better yet, Stansbury's? If we give it to Pearson, we might as well give it to Pettway. I'd at least feel good about giving the kid a break.

Just a guess but I would assume Pearson's name is being leaked intentionally but more as a courtesy after his time here. That he's being "considered" maybe helps get him on the radar for some smaller college jobs?

@RyanBrownWJOX: Take this however you wish: Had a former SEC head coach tell me the rumor in coaching circles is Alabama will offer Gregg Marshall $3.5M.

Saw that last night. Not saying Marshall will accept it, but we are going to make a strong offer to him. Mighty tough to turn down $3.5 million. Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

How much did Mizzou offer Marshall last year? Marshall seems pretty content at Wichita State, but I'd be thrilled if we landed hm.

No clue, but I think Wichita St could match whatever we offer so it would come down t where he wants to be in the future. I know the Koch brothers are Wichita St alums, but no idea how much they contribute there.

He turned down Mizzou last year, so I'm not confident we'll get him, but it's worth an offer.

While I'd love to get Marshall, I don't think we have a realistic shot of landing him. Heard several talkin' heads saying there's no chance Marshall would leave for Bama...but, more than that, reading this CBS article makes me think our chances are nil:

LINK

Some snippets from that article:

quote:

"One place, and I don't want to say which place, but one place offered me so much money and I basically just told them, 'I don't care how much money there is; that money won't help me sleep when I'm losing,'" Marshall said. "Winning is what I really like to do. I'm fine financially. My drug is winning."

quote:

"The only way I'd leave for [a power-conference] job would be if I had an opportunity to fight on solid ground," Marshall said. "I would want to fight on equal footing." Translation: Don't call unless you're an AD with one of the best programs in whatever league you reside -- like Wichita State is in the MVC. Otherwise, you're wasting everybody's time.

quote:

But I'm not sure most realize the opportunities Wichita State provides. For instance, nobody can ever tell Marshall he can't get a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, make a Final Four, host ESPN's GameDay, sign top-100 recruits or earn $2 million a year at Wichita State because "those are things I've already done," Marshall said.

If Battle ultimately ends up getting Marshall to come here, it'd be a major coup...

According to BOL's top guy 15 minutes ago, Alabama is going to make Marshall say no. To the tune of up to $4 million. Then it is on to Crean.. Though he referenced buyout concerns.

Up to $4m? Make it $6. Not like we don't have the money.

Wasn't referencing only Marshall. Plus, Miller's going to be our coach anyways, right?
