I think Alabama's offer outside of the actual cash just became way more critical. If Texas even offers something in the same ballpark, we are probably gonna get passed over.

Welp...Barnes stepping down changes things.

I *hope* that we've gotten a head start with Marshall which prevents Texas from getting an inside track with him.

So do we take a look at Rick Barnes now? He made the NCAA Tourney 19 out of the last 20 years.

Well I seriously doubt we've looked away from Marshall. It's not like we are going to back down just because Texas is coming open.

If Marshall is on our plane, make sure he has his phone on airplane mode. And do NOT let him turn it off of airplane mode until he's signed a contract.

No chance. Yesterday, he was "the only name on our list." Texas won't change that, but we've been waiting for this job to open all week. Once it does, no one knows the impact it will have on Marshall. It's fun to speculate and my guess would be he'd rather go Texas than Alabama, but I have no clue.

Some dude on BOL posted that the plane just landed back in Tuscaloosa. Not sure who was on the plane though.

My thoughts on how this job is being pitched (or how i hope it is):

A lot of coaches can win at Kentucky, UNC, Duke, UCLA, Indiana. It takes a special coach - truly elite - to build a power. At Alabama you'll have every imaginable resource to assist you in building a truly elite program that can rival those national brands.

By resources we mean you'll have a great pool of $$ to pay assistants at top levels in country. You'll have a recruiting budget second to none in the country. We'll make sure that the facilities are among top in the conference within the next 5 years.

There is a reason we started our search with you. You are OUR guy. Top choice. Only choice. We want to be special and you are the coach to make that happen. For that, we'll pay you like a top 5 coach in the country because that's what we think you are and that's how committed we are to basketball at Bama - that's how much it matters to us.

Interesting note from the UTX247 site on their coaching search:

quote:

Gregg Marshall, Wichita State: The hottest name in college basketball coaching right now, Marshall will not be short on offers this offseason. Alabama has already reportedly opened its coffers to tempt him with a $3 million a year offer, and many other programs will make their pitch for the Shockers head coach. If it comes down to $3 million, that may be too rich for even Texas – Barnes made $2.55 million in 2014-15 -- but Marshall may be the best option on the market. He’s led the Shockers to a NIT championship and a Final Four in his tenure, transforming Wichita State into a national program by developing late-blooming talent.

I didn't see a VIP tag on the info yet. I'll take it down if it becomes VIP LINK

Well if $3 million is on the top end of what they want to pay, maybe $4 million will completely scare them away

Earlier in the week, it seemed that between 3-4 million was what we were rumored to be offering. That's all rumor, but I hope you're right and we up the offer in hopes that they hesitate.

Make it happen, Dollar Bill (Battle). 3 million also seems to be the starting point for us if rumors are to be believed.

Agreed. But now that I think about it, has Texas ever made a Saban like offer to a coach? Or do we all just assume based on how much they're bringing in?

I hope we leaked $3M with the intention of offering him $4M right out of the gate.

You know, Texas has this reputation of being such a great athletic program with limitless resources and piles of money....but if you look at Texas' recent history, its not like they go out and name their coach. That said, they could very well name their coach but they've made some underwhelming hires.

I'd be surprised if $3M scared Texas away, but I think we are well above $3M. Posted this earlier this week and will repost here:

Some of you may (or may not) know that a good friend of mine is a sports agent with clients primarily being college football coaches (and mostly assistants).

He said the rumor he's heard is the initial offer to Marshall will be or $25M over six years, guaranteed unless probation, with the potential to be $30M over six years when you factor in bonuses.
