When I heard that Bama was 1 for 12 on 3rd down I honestly didn't believe it so I went back and looked at the tape. A lot of that poor conversion had to do with distance in my opinion. 3rd and short is quite different than 3rd and 8.

I also looked at Georgia's 3rd down conversion rate. They were only 2 of 16. 3 of 16 if you count a conversion from roughing the snapper penalty. Here is what happened last Saturday.

Bama on Offense:

3rd and 1= Fumble
3rd and 1= Punt
3rd and 15=Field Goal
3rd and 1= Convert
3rd and 6= Punt
3rd and 14= Punt
3rd and 7= Punt
3rd and 8= Punt
3rd and 8= Punt
3rd and 7= Punt
3rd and 3= Turn over on downs
3rd and 9= Turn over on downs

Georgia's performance on 3rd downs:

3rd and 10= Punt
3rd and 7= Punt
3rd and 5= Punt
3rd and 1= Convert
3rd and 3 = Convert off Bama Penalty
3rd and 35= Field Goal
3rd and 6= Punt
3rd and 14= Punt
3rd and 8= Punt
3rd and 7= Punt
3rd and 2= Punt
3rd and 5= Punt
3rd and 10 = Convert
3rd and 10= interception
3rd and 19= Punt
3rd and 11= punt

To me the takeaway was a lot of conservative play calling on 3rd and long on both sides. Crappy conditions and just wanting to play for field position.

We are 114/128 teams for 3rd down efficiency on the season at 32%.

We haven't been very good on 3rd downs all season, and when you take in the weather, not surprised we didn't convert many.

It is definitely something we have to improve on. A good bit of it is Lane experimenting against Monroe and MTSU, but is something we have to improve. Hopefully we can get it together with Arkansas

I'm too lazy(and not savvy enough) to look it up but I would love to know how many times we have been in 2nd and long and 3rd and 4+.

I'd like to see a breakdown of when those happened. If the majority were in the end half then I wouldn't be very alarmed. The 2nd half offense seemed like, hey let's try to run out the clock, not do anything dangerous that might cause a TO and give uga any type of momentum to get back in the game. Especially when the weather was as bad as it was.

Saban addressed this in his press conference by saying that we were doing a lot of runs up the middle and trying to let the air out of the ball. He basically said that we were trying to just get out of there in the second half.

That's pretty much what happened. Here are the results of Bama drives up to their last TD

Fumble
Punt
FG
TD
Punt
TD
Punt
Punt
TD

4 scoring drives, 4 punts, 1 turnover.

During those possessions, Bama only faced 6 third downs (which speaks volumes about their dominance). They only converted 1, but another was Henry's fumble (which had first down yardage) and a Henry run up the middle to kill the clock with :50 left in the first half and Bama leading 24-3.

The others came after the score was 38-3 and everyone from the refs to Uga the dog just wanted to go the heck home.

Bama attempted 1 third down pass after the last TD. All the rest were runs.
