Well then we're set for an overachieving year next year right?

Coker terrifies me if we're being honest.

I just think there are 100 or so 1-A teams who would laugh hysterically at us talking about rebuilding or overachieving.

I'm kind of hoping for one of the kids to take over. I don't like having 4 qbs in 4 years. Screws with continuity.

It would be awesome if Cornwell or Barnett proved to be worthy.

I don't think Barnett will play, Saban loves RSing Freshman QBs.

I think it is Coker's job to lose. He looked good when he played.

I like Cornwell as the darkhorse though. Guy has just about everything you could ask for, and he has a no nonsense release. We're gonna be young on O anyway, if he has a good offseason, look out.

"Terrifies me" is obviously exaggerating for effect, but I am not a Coker believer.

Barnett won't see the field. I feel pretty confident in saying that. He'll redshirt and hopefully be a stud down the line.

Maybe Cornwell or Bateman will step up.

There's plenty of talent there.

I'm mentioning Barnett fully realizing there isn't a chance in hell he is our starter next year. Alec Morris has a better chance than Barnett

Bateman looked good in the spring. Can he progress from that?

The problem with this year's team is that there was very little garbage time. Our backups didn't get much reps at all, so a lot of next year will be unknown.

We have the best coaching staff in cfb, and we will be back to the top soon enough. Might not be next year, but by 2016 I see us fielding a title contending team.

I've forwarded your resume to the athletic department to coach the defense. Will report when I hear back.

A lot of this is a stretch. And I meam stretch... However yes the defense is poorly coached. In the secondary and edges. Zero pass rush = extra ms/ DB has to Rush which leaves someone always open. No contain extends drives when QB takes off. The tackling this year has been suspect. Too many arm tackles and diving. Clean form tackles like mostly Hightower and McClain is what makes Alabama defense tick. Stubbornness by Saban and smart lose us games. Vanilla play calling by kiffn too. Player mistakes, lack of heart, and terrible I'm game coaching lost the game. Plain and simple

CFB is in a transition stage and the defenses just havent quite caught up yet.

2012 and 2013 Stanford say hello. Oregon says hello. They play in an offensive oriented league that is also the 2nd best conference in the country. Perhaps Saban and Smart should talk to Derek Mason—the man that coached the Stanford defense in 2012 and 2013 when they slowed down Oregon and other high-powered offenses.

A lot of read option, qb-run teams where before there just wasn't a lot of that. What great offense did we play in 2009 or 2011?

Bingo. Upvoted.
Stats and perceived dominance are influenced by competition.

Clemson has the #1 statistical defense, but Georgia ran over them to open the season.

Louisville's #s were great until they faced real teams like Florida State and Georgia.

What are Michigan State's #s? Their games versus Oregon, Ohio State, and Baylor show just how "good" they were.

Our defense is trending downwards

Can't disagree with that. Since the GOAT 2011 Defense, we've gotten worse each year. We used to be pissed if we gave up more than 14-17 points. Now we give up 30+ on a repeated basis. Some of that is due to nature of offenses. But as I've said, there's obviously something fundamentally wrong with what we're doing. The 3rd and Longs are killing us....absolutely killing us and it was a problem going back to before this season. We routinely let QBs have career days against us.

That said, we still have a better defense than most other teams but the trend is not in our favor and I don't want to rely on having to outscore teams in shootouts.

Look at TCU - Ole Miss. Our defense just doesn't do that anymore.

We shut out OM just last season. Plus the only guy to really have a ton of success against us, Treadwell, didn't play. He is basically their entire offense. Plus they lost Tunsil early and were already down a couple of linemen.

We shut out A&M, shut down Arkansas' potent rushing attack.

We couldn't design an effective "exotic" blitz to save our fricking lives. They never work. Never.

I think us trying to do this is what is killing us. Offenses snap the ball too quickly to disguise things and get the ball out quickly. We are leaving some of our DB's on an island that should never be left on an island, especially since we got zero help in coverage from our LB's this year.

I just wish Saban and Kirby would take a look at how KState defended Auburn this season. Just play good assignment football instead of trying to out chess match these offenses.

No amount of coaching will ever turn a Trey Depriest into a CJ Mosely. Or Devall into Hightower. Or Eddie Jackson or Bradley Sylve into Dee Milliner or Javier Arenas.

Recruiting? Never, ever, assume that a highly rated player is actually that good. Sure, we've had great classes, but Tyler Love should have helped us get over the 5 star hype a long time ago.
