-- Personnel groupings didn't appear to change much from the brief media viewing period before the game.

-- Cornerback Maurice Smith wasn't participating much in Friday's practice, but we was out there working without limitation Saturday.

-- Linebacker Dillon Lee was also on the field again after Thursday's DUI arrest.

-- There weren't any black jerseys for injured players beyond the usual for DeAndrew White and Darren Lake.

-- The quarterbacks looked sharp in warmups. I didn't see any wild passes, but there also wasn't a defense out there for those drills.

-- Nothing new with the receivers. True freshman Cam Sims continues to go second behind Amari Cooper on one side of the formation.

-- It looked like they were beginning to paint the field for A-Day. The lettering for "Alabama" was outlined in the end zones this week

Saban - Didn't have a good day running the ball. Passing game was good again. Coop had another good day as did Blake.

Maurice didn't play today, being cautious as he had a concussion. Tony Brown got a ton of reps. Bradley and Averett got a lot of reps and making steady improvement. Got in trouble fundamentally a couple times today, but good learning opportunity for them.

Blake is showing a lot of command out there. Probably made 3 or 4 plays scrambling and then throwing the ball. Several 3rd down situations, guys couldn't get him and he scrambled and made a play. Doing better in the pocket, very accurate. Pleased with him. Other guys have good days and bad days, need to work on consistency. Cooper probably has had more reps than the others.

Thought the 2's on defense played better today. Tackled better today. Stopped the run better on defense. Offensivley, more efficient throwing the ball. Maybe not the yards better, but thinks the one thing weren't consistent on both sides.. were the first teams. Not so much the team, but mistakes.

OLBers doing well. Lee playing in and out. Especially if Rueben can't go. Xavier and Denzell, doing well. All pretty good rushers and has helped as well. More athletic on defense than maybe a year ago. Will help against spread teams if we can stay healthy.

Improving, but still not playing as physical as need to be. Like the way they're working, can improve.

Grant Hill working at right tackle and center, thinks it'll be easier when the guys get here in fall, but feels he would do good at center, guard or even tackle. His versatility is a strength and may help secure a starting spot sooner.

Wish they had shared Henry and Yeldon's numbers. Glad to see Chris Black finally making an impact.

The qb's had 4 td passes but the receivers caught 5 tds. I wonder who threw the extra td.

Parker McLeod, unless it was a trick play in which a WR throws the ball, like Maze to Michael Williams in 9-6.

Exactly.. Hopefully he takes all the negativity surrounding his possible chance at being our QB and gives it all he's got. You gotta admire a talented player, who sticks around and gives it his all once his number is called.

I don't know if it was TI, but some rapper mentioned Sims in a song while he was in high school.

there is an old video where TI claims Blake is his cousin, and that he is going to Bama and will be the next Mike Vick.

you can probably still find it on youtube. it's kinda funny

Not sure what y'all think about Drew DeArmond's info, but it's worth a post anyway. Here are his observations from the second scrimmage.

quote:

For the second straight weekend, Alabama QB Blake Sims served notice that he is the man to beat for the 2014 QB job at Alabama. While he did not have the long explosive plays that he was able to convert in the first scrimmage, Sims was very effective at getting the ball in his playmakers hands and converting on 3rd downs.
Other players that served notice that they will be a large part of the 2014 team were freshman LT Cam Robinson, freshman WR Cam Sims, redshirt freshman WR Robert Foster and sophomore LB Tim Williams, who led all defensive player with 3 sacks.

Positives: Robinson was able to take about 80% of the snaps with the 1st team offense at LT. After he came in on the 3rd offensive series, he never came out and did not take any reps with the 2's. Several Tide WR’s were able to shine today and take advantage of the accurate throws from Sims. Cooper, Black, Foster and Sims all had nice days. Chris Black was the “wow factor” player of the day with several game changing catches and runs.

On the other side of the ball, the UA front seven was very stingy vs the run. Jarren Reed was in the backfield all day as was A’Shawn Robinson.

Both Tim Williams and DJ Pettway were able to apply pressure on the UA QB’s. Williams had 3 sacks and Pettway had 2.

The longest play of the day was a 70 yard completion from QB Alec Morris to ArDarius Stewart.

Leon Brown has moved to right guard

Areas that need improvement:
While the OL is slowly starting to come together, other areas are not. For the second straight week, the Tide kicking game was all over the place as K Adam Griffin continues too struggle with his accuracy.

Bradley Sylve looks very comfortable at one corner spot, but the same can not be said about Cyrus Jones at the other. If a big play or a completion is made it is almost always on Jones side of the field.

Ball security at the RB position came back to the surface this afternoon with 3 fumbles. Both T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry put the ball on the ground today.

RB Derrick Henry scored a TD but fumbled

Progress Report:
Lots of positive steps have been taken by the 2014 unit since the start of spring practice. Depth is being built along the DL and several young players have served notice that they will factor in on the 2-deep depth chart by the end of August. While the rushing attack was average today, it looked to be more of a by-product of a pretty salty DL instead of the OL and RB’s not doing their jobs

Quick Hits:
QB’s-Sims is the clear cut leader and continues to serve notice that his is “his team.” Bateman has improved but still needs more time to become a quality SEC QB. Morris flashed a big arm at times today but still has not put it all together. Cornwell and McLeod were non-factors today.

RB’s-You really could make a case for any of the top 3 backs to be the starter. Tenpenny is making a lot of noise, just flat pushing the pile and runs people over on every carry. Jalston Fowler made a fantastic one-handed grab on a wheel route from the FB spot.

WR’s and TE’s-OJ Howard was more active in the passing game today. All the WR’s flashed at times. Its the deepest and most talented unit on the team.

OL-I have never seen a true freshman OL come as far as fast as Cam Robinson has in 4 weeks. Unless there is a collapse by him in one of the last two practices leading up to the A-Day game, the Monroe, Louisiana, native should get the start at LT with Arie K at LG, Kelly at C, Brown ant RG and Shepherd at RT. If he can continue on his current development path it would allow Dominick Jackson to be an added bonus at one of the OG spots.

UA DC Kirby Smart & ILBs coach Kevin Steele

DL-Depth is being developed here in a hurry. Right now you can say that Robinson, Reed, Ivory, Pettway and Tomlinson are in the two deep. Dee Liner is on the verge of joining this group. Jonathan Allen is nursing an injury.

LB’s-DePreist and Ragland are at the top of the depth chart at ILB. Reuben Foster was limited today in the scrimmage but was a disruptive force during Friday’s workout. Shaun Dion Hamilton has been one of the top surprises of the spring and has performed well. Tim Williams showed elite pass rush skills today for the second straight scrimmage. Following his off-field incident, Dillon Lee worked with the second unit at Sam today. Denzell Devall slid over to 1st team Sam and Dickson to first team Jack for the second scrimmage.

DB’s-The safety spots look very good with Collins and Williams. Both Nick Perry and Geno Smith factor in with the 1's during nickel and dime looks. Redshirt freshman Johnny Cook and true freshman early enrollee Hootie Jones are next in line and getting better. Sylve was very good in coverage, but as mentioned earlier, Cyrus Jones continues to be the weak link.

This offense can be SO explosive.

Reed and Robinson

I hope Ivory can be a competent Nose in base, but he didn't show it in 2013. He looked better in 2012.

Tony Brown will start all season, imo. Hopefully Eddie Jackson will be back during the season and good to go, but if he isn't, hopefully Sylve or Humphrey can show us something.

We have so many guys who could be making a LOT of noise on different teams, hopefully they all get a chance to show the world what they've got, but as long as we win it doesn't matter who catches the passes.

Would love to see Dom Jackson at RT instead of Shep. Maybe Shep has turned it around, but he was awful in 2013. And Arie showed flashes, but ultimately he was too inconsistent. I'd personally rather see Grant Hill at LG than Arie, C-Rob/Grant/Kelly/Leon/Jackson would be our best 5, imo.

Jon Allen will play a lot at the end of the day, too much talent.

Ragland vs Reuben is gonna go all the way through Fall Camp. Devall and Dickson at each OLB spot at the same time could be interesting, but both took steps back in 2013. Neither can cover.

Jarrick has some talent, but being a FS isn't where I'd put him. If LC is at Free and Jarrick at Strong, that works out. I figure Geno will end up starting next to LC. Perry has been way to inconsistent. Hootie is such a physical specimen, I hope he sees a lot of PT to get his feet wet. He'll at least be a Special Teams STUD.

Give it time Chat, but if it is true, I would love to see Cyrus go back and work the slot. C. Jones, Cyrus and C. Black would be a gruesome match-up against any Safety/Linebacker/Nickle Back.
