What we saw

-- This wasn't the hottest day in which Alabama has practiced, but it might be the most humid. Though certainly not ideal for reporters who like to complain about everything, this is exactly what Nick Saban should want as Saturday's game approaches. The projected high temperature for kickoff is 96. Currently, Texas A&M is practicing in similarly toasty conditions. The Crimson Tide experienced an unseasonably cool August, but it's put in its fair share of work in hot weather, too.

-- The next man up behind Jeoffrey Pagan these days is freshman Jonathan Allen. Previously, it was Dalvin Tomlinson, who was declared out for the season today after knee surgery.

-- Tight end Brian Vogler appears to be wearing a soft cast on his left hand. It's covering the base of his hand along with his pinkie and index finger. It doesn't appear to be slowing him down at all. He was even going through blocking drills.

-- We chronicled Dillon Lee's movements from the inside and outside linebackers throughout preseason camp, so it should be worth noting that he's been with the outside crew recently. Lee's emerged as a regular on special teams and looks to be a backup option in Alabama's nickel and dime defenses.

-- Walk-on safety Jai Miller is one of a number of players assuming the role of Texas A&M safety Floyd Raven. Raven's status is up in the air after injuring his collar bone in Saturday's game against Sam Houston State.

-- RBs Altee Tenpenny and Tyren Jones continue to wear scout team jerseys, though it's uncertain why Jones is wearing No. 14. Tenpenny is wearing No. 21, which belongs to Texas A&M RB Tra Carson.

-- The media has been seeing just one period of practice since the season opener. That's part of the reason why our practice reports have been a bit on the brief side lately. Also, the Crimson Tide is very healthy, so there hasn't been much "black jersey watching" to do.

Like it's been for the past two weeks, sun and warm temperatures greeted the Tide on the practice field. The outdoor practice was conducted in 93-degree heat with the heat index climbing close to 99.

What we saw

-- Starting tight end Brian Vogler didn't have a cast on his left hand. It was spotted during Monday's practice, but Vogler only wore gloves Tuesday.

-- The outside linebackers worked on "scoop and score" drills with coach Lance Thompson.

-- On the defensive line, freshman Jonathan Allen continued to work behind Jeoffrey Pagen at defensive end. The injured Dalvin Tomlinson was the backup in that position. Dee Liner, another freshman is behind Allen.

-- Redshirt freshman Ryan Anderson has a hard cast on his left pinkie finger. He was still running through the full drills.

-- Strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran made his rounds with inspirational thoughts. "Oh yeah, that's what I'm talking about," was the message to the defensive line.

Got busy yesterday and didn't get a chance to post..

-- This marks Alabama's first normal "game week" of practice this season. Alabama used a couple of extra days to prepare for Virginia Tech and Texas A&M, so that threw off the schedule a bit. Mondays are typically devoted to "cleaning up" what went wrong in the previous game. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Alabama's players typically wear full pads.

-- WR Kevin Norwood wore a black, non-contact jersey and worked off to the side. He was working with elastic bands. We're not sure what on Norwood is injured. He limped off the field late in the third quarter after a Kenyan Drake rush. Norwood underwent toe surgery during the offseason.

-- CB Deion Belue was also working off to the side and wearing a black jersey. Belue is dealing with a turf toe injury. Like Norwood, he's questionable for Saturday's game against Colorado State.

-- OG Anthony Steen wasn't spotted on the practice field, but a UA spokesman told reporters that he was dressed. Saban did not describe Steen's injury, but said he was probable for Saturday.

-- Depending on how limited Steen is, this could be a big week for someone like redshirt freshman Alphonse Taylor. Kellen Williams would likely start in the event that Steen couldn't play, but Taylor could also be the beneficiary of some increased reps with the players ahead of him on the depth chart. Whomever is behind Williams at left guard would also see reps with the second team rather than the third team.

I'm hoping. Would like it if AJ only played a half.

Hope we hold Belue, Steen, and Norwood out. Even if their injuries aren't serious, not worth risk of turning them into nagging injuries that affect them for several weeks. Go ahead and nip it in the bud.

Thus far, I think only 8 true freshman have played which is a low number. It'll be interesting to see how many more play on Saturday. I'd like to see Mo Smith, Eddie Jackson and maybe Cook play some corner (along with Sylve). A couple out of that group will likely have to play significant minutes for us next year.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Practice resumed in sunny Tuscaloosa with the standard afternoon workout.

The Crimson Tide was back on the standard practice field after using the far one (closest to Hackberry Lane). The Colorado State game plan is installed and the scout team was in full effect.

The media viewing period was extended from one to two periods, so there was extra time for observation.

Setting the scene

The temperature was right around 90 degrees, but honestly, it didn't feel like it did last week. Perhaps autumn is coming.

What we saw

-- The two injured players were back on exercise bikes. Receiver Kevin Norwood and cornerback Deion Belue were doing heavy intervals with the strength coaches during the media viewing period.

-- Right guard Anthony Steen was in a regular white jersey with the offensive line, but Kellen Williams was taking his first-team snaps when the starters lined up against the scout team. Williams replaced Steen after going down late in the Texas A&M game. Nick Saban listed him as the sixth starter who could fill in at nearly any offensive line position if needed.

-- The secondary was mixing different combinations at cornerback. Bradley Sylve took a few snaps with Cyrus Jones and the rest of the first team. (I'd caution reading too much into that since we only saw a snap shot of the practice)

-- The running back rotation started with T.J. Yeldon, then Dee Hart, Kenyon Drake and Jalston Fowler. Hart didn't see any action Saturday against Texas A&M at running back.

What comes next

A few players will meet with reporters following the practice. Nick Saban next speaks following Wednesday's practice.

Found this in another practice report:

quote:

-- When Alabama worked on its nickel formation, Landon Collins came in at safety and Vinnie Sunseri moved to "star." HaHa Clinton-Dix was the other safety as usual.

Not sure why we'd put Vinnie back at Star when CNS seemed pleased with Jarrick's play there. May have just been a looksie or could be they want LC on the field more but don't want to take Vinnie out. If that's the case, I'd rather see LC at Star and keep Vinnie at his Safety spot.

Have either of them played this year? If not, why not redshirt them when we have a lot of good receivers ahead of them?

Neither Falkins or Robert Foster has played. Thinking Fostet will redshirt because he arrived so late but wouldn't be surprised if Falkins plays especially if Norwood doesn't play.

Same. LC has played really well, so I get wanting to play him more, but Vinnie at Star is a mistake. If they are playing together and LC is deep, put Vinnie at Money. If not, put LC star or Money and keep Vinnie deep.

Per BOL Robert Foster played against VT. They also said that in practice today Sylve and Cy Jones were the cbs in nickel, and LC was playing star. Eddie Jackson and Maurice Smith were cbs in the second unit in nickel with Collins staying in at star for more reps.
