I think more than anything Tony Brown is gonna be a bad arse gunner on punt team. He's a weapon at that spot.

I don't think that is clear in all from the replay. You don't really see anything.

If you can't see from all the replays that all they look at is his ankle, I don't know what to tell you because it is crystal clear that is what he directs them to and that is what they assess - and that is without taking into consideration what people at the game reported about his ankle being wrapped.

Also unless this is your first year watching college football, you should know that announcers are about as reliable as a magic 8 ball.

Citation needed - particularly one where Saban flat out lied about the type of injury.

I didn't know that it was controversial. Thought it was common knowledge.

He'd probably describe a leg that had gone through a wood chipper as "a sprain."

Actually, he didn't. He was very clever that way. He said something along the lines of "Cooper and Blake are the two we are preparing to start". He knew Hurts was going to play, but his comments were clever to hide that.

I'm sorry you couldn't gather from that Hurts was 3rd String which I knew he wasn't although it all came melting down when he trotted in ( thanks for all the apologies). Read between the lines. He is always clever about everything including injuries. Hence why I made the comment.

No need. I know you never believed him to be 3rd string. I know you weren't shocked when he went on the field early against USC. I know you were joking about the "3rd string" comment in this thread. I was just acknowledging that Saban never actually referred to Hurts in that way b/c he's to clever to ever tip his hand - on anything.

There is a difference for wanting to post info to share or to get e-cred for it.

People enjoy inside info but insiders need to be careful not to be condescending when they provide information even if some do not believe it but it happens to end up being true.

Again I enjoy the info.

I took enough shite to make 1 or 2 condescending remarks.

TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama’s coaching staff recognizes a handful of players for their individual performances after every win, and one Crimson Tide offensive lineman has been named a Player of the Week three out of the first four weeks of the 2016 season. That would be true freshman right tackle Jonah Williams, who has arguably been Alabama’s best lineman so far.

Williams has started every game at right tackle, something he told Ross Pierschbacher was a goal of his when he enrolled. When asked about Williams’ development, Nick Saban provided some high praise for the true freshman.

“He’s just technically very sound,” Saban said. “He’s very athletic, a very smart guy and just does a really good job of executing. Another one of those guys that can take what you, sort of, coach him and bring it to the table and do it on a consistent basis. He’s a fine young man. Football is important to him. He’s got a lot of pride in performance.

“He’s made a tremendous amount of improvement from the spring to the beginning of the season to now. We certainly needed that at that position, and he certainly provided it for us.”

But Williams has caught more eyes than just the ones that belong to his head coach. He has impressed his teammates with his performance on the practice field, in the weight room and in games in just a short time on campus after enrolling early in January and helping Alabama prepare for Clemson and the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

A former five-star recruit, Williams was the No. 2 offensive tackle, No. 3 player in the state of California and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2016 recruiting cycle, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings.

“He’s a really smart player,” Pierschbacher said of Williams. “I mean he’s a freak really, to be honest, as far in the weight room. Whether it be there or in the film room, he’s picked up the offense so quick and doesn’t make many mental errors and stuff like that. He plays really fast and hard. He’s just an explosive guy. He’s a really good player”

The Folsom, Calif., native loves the weight room, as he and Pierschbacher can be found there after practice, getting some extra reps in before the day is over. “He lives in there, and it shows,” the Tide’s first-team left guard said.

But after watching the first four games, it’s evident the freshman tackle enjoys playing in the games, as well. Grading out at 96 percent in pass blocking on 99 plays, according to CFB Film Room, Williams has been one of the most technically sound players along the Alabama offensive line this season, and his teammates have seen no sign of him slowing down.

“Any freshman who comes in and starts at Alabama and starts on the offensive line, that’s an amazing thing to do,” center Bradley Bozeman said. “He’s so mature and he’s improved week-to-week and showed up. And ever since he’s been named the starter he hasn’t looked back.”

Alabama returned to the practice field Tuesday afternoon for its second on-field preparation day of Kentucky week. The Crimson Tide players practiced outdoors and in full pads on a sunny, 84-degree afternoon.

Here are several observations from the media viewing portion of Alabama’s Tuesday practice in Tuscaloosa:

- Running back Damien Harris (ankle) led the running backs through individual and receiving drills with the quarterbacks, but he sat out of contact drills when the first-team rushing offense matched up against the scout team. He was not wearing a black, no-contact jersey, but there were three stationary bikes on the sideline that were not in use during the viewing periods.

- Joshua Jacobs and Bo Scarbrough joined Harris for receiving drills with quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Blake Barnett, and B.J. Emmons replaced Harris in that group when the tailbacks took handoffs and faced a defense.

- Scarbrough’s left thigh was wrapped because of a thigh bruise, while Emmon’s’ left hamstring housed a support apparatus. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey also wore a support apparatus on his right hamstring for a second day.

- Wide receivers ArDarius Stewart (knee) and Robert Foster (knee) participated in receiver drills and did not wear black jerseys. They moved well through drills and routes, especially Foster, but both wore braces on their left knees.

- The first-team dime secondary remained the same, but formerly-suspended cornerback Tony Brown was working at Star with the second-team defense. Freshman Jared Mayden, who now wears No. 8, was spotted at safety.

- Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi could be heard shouting “eight yards per carry” to his players. Kentucky running back Stanley “Boom” Williams averages exactly eight yards per carry through four games this season.

- A few young linebackers were wearing scout-team numbers, including Ben Davis (34), Joshua McMillon (56) and Mekhi Brown (41). Those numbers belong to Wildcat linebackers Jordan Jones (6-foot-2, 220 pounds), Kash Daniel (6-foot-1, 241 pounds) and Josh Allen (6-foot-5, 230 pounds), respectively. Xavian Marks also wore No. 1 for wideout Ryan Timmons.

- An NFL scout from the Jacksonville Jaguars watched Tuesday’s outdoor practice from the sideline.

*** What’s next: Alabama will be back at practice Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. CT. After that, Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban will hold his final press conference of the week at approximately 6 p.m. CT.

TUSCALOOSA -- The deep ball. Since Lane Kiffin was hired at Alabama, it’s been a staple of the offense. But in Kiffin’s first two play-calling seasons, and to begin this one, the deep shots have struggled at times in the early goings.

Granted, in the previous two years, both Blake Sims and Jake Coker improved with their throws down the field, and that will likely come for freshman Jalen Hurts as 2016 progresses. Head coach Nick Saban sees it that way, too.

“Jalen did a nice job in the (Kent State) game,” Saban said Monday. “I still think it’s a matter of a couple reads here and there that we need to clean up with him. I don’t think there’s anything physically wrong with the way he throws the ball and each week he has gotten progressively better and we’ve had less and less and less of those types of things -- which is the progress that we want to see and hopefully will be able to continue to build on.

“I know it’s very important to him. He works really hard, very conscientious, a really good person, good leader, well-respected by his teammates. Nobody wants to get it right more than him, and that’s why I think he’ll get it right.”

Hurts has thrown for 727 yards, five touchdowns and one interception on 64-of-102 passing (62.7 percent) in four games. And one of his top targets, tight end O.J. Howard, said “so far with the season being so young, we’ve done a great job” in terms of downfield passing when asked how he would grade the vertical game. But he does see one area that needs improvement.

“Timing, everyone get on the same chemistry,” Howard said Tuesday afternoon. “But that comes as the season goes. It’s all about timing. … You just have to find time. Before practice, after practice. You have to get chemistry with that guy. You never know who is going to be in the game, so you have to get the timing down with each quarterback, no matter who it is.”

Wideout Calvin Ridley said he tries to catch at least three “good routes” with Hurts after practice. “Deep ball, short ball, anything that would help with timing.” That’s because he catches passes from all of the Alabama quarterbacks during the early portions of practice, which he will not do in an actual game. Like Howard said, timing is everything in an effective passing game.

“We just have to get a lot more reps together in practice,” Ridley said. “All the quarterbacks go and throw, so sometimes I don’t (get throws) with the quarterback that’s starting, and it just makes the timing bad sometimes.”

The good news for the deep throws, and passing offense as a whole, is the progression Hurts has shown as a first-year player. Both Howard and Ridley were extremely complimentary of the young quarterback, and even Saban shared their sentiment when he spoke Monday. Echoing his head coach, however, Ridley sees areas of improvement for himself and Hurts.

“We’re pretty good with it right now. We just have to get better,” Ridley said. “That’s with anybody. We’re a young team. We got experience, but he’s kind of young. He’s going to learn as we go. I think he’s doing great.”

so Jonah moves to LT next year. Who is the heir apparent for RT. we should be sold with plenty of experience coming back at the two guards and center. So we should only be replacing 1 start on the OL. Our entire back field is coming back. Lose OJ and a few others on the OT that are back ups

We might have a true freshman at right tackle or possibly Matt Wommack.
