I think it's the correct decision financially. I know it sucks for UAB fans

I wish they would go to the FBS instead of shutting down all together. It would free up a LOT of money and they'd be competitive too without having to compete with Auburn and Bama.

I lived for 13 years in another state, growing up. I was a Bama fan long before we ever moved, but, I also pulled for UAB basketball when Bartow had them going.

When I moved back to the Birmingham area after college, I got so sick and tired of the 2 UAB whiners, UAwannabees as I called them, that typically called into Bhm sports talk programs (many of you if you were in Bhm in the 90's know who I am talking about) that I lost any interest in the program.

I really don't care if they have a football program or not, but, I do take offense to the UA BOT getting the black eye because UA is "scared or afraid of UAB" (the Auburn rhetoric.)

It's the right thing to do from the fiscal responsibility perspective.

Nothing about college athletics is fiscally responsible. So, that argument goes right out the window. In most instances, college sports programs are a huge waste of resources. What are there? Like 20 football programs that turn a profit or break even each year?

Now, the question of whether UA is "afraid" of UAB or not is a weird one. Are they afraid as a group? No, I don't think so. BUT, there are certain people on the BOT who seem intent to cut UAB's knees out from under them every time they get something good going. There was a time when UAB would take one really good team to the wire -- or beat them straight up -- every year. They had positive momentum and people were paying attention. That time passed and UAB slipped back into the shadows of Legion Field.

I don't know why some on the BOT hate UAB football, but they do.

It's obvious to anyone without ties to UA.

This is a bunch of bullshite and the BOT should be ashamed.

Given how the deck was stacked against them, I'm surprised UAB lasted this long and had the success they did.

Such a bullshite answer, no one goes because they will miss the real games that they care about going on at the same time. I'm sick of certain auburn sports personalities carrying water and propping up a program that has no real fan base in some weird around the corner shot at Alabama.

It's like the BOT kicked the UAB football program in the balls over and over and then complained when they couldn't stand up on their own.

I hate to see them go but programs that are not in the fab five conferences probably need to redefine what college football really is outside the big boy system. I for one would like to see programs like UAB go back to something more similar to division II. There is so much to be gained for young men getting to play this game, I myself would have loved to had some avenue to continue playing after High School but there weren't many options back then.

Does anyone here know the financial sustainability of a program like UAB at the FCS level? Surely it would be easier to maintain.

I find it hard to believe there can't be a better solution than shutting down the program.

Why cant the board simply recommend a move down to the FCS if the FBS is such a financial burden?

They would still have virtually no facilities with even less money than before.

The fact is UAB is about to go through a similar (scaled down) transformation like UA did when Dr. Witt arrived in 2003. It's not cheap and it seems they would rather invest their money in that instead of a football team with little support.

If people want something they will support it.

Gene Bartow thumbed his nose at Bama.

So it bothers m not.

Most people don't want their cars broken into Everytime they go to a game on Saturday.

Legion is just a bad area in general. If they moved it more people would go.

With all due respect, 67,000 Alabama A&M fans and Alabama State fans say you're an idiot.

Yeah...just look at all the rapin' and thievin' and killin' goin' on.

Calm down, no one is trying to argue with you. We're having a civil conversation here..

Here's the point...and if you're so sensitive that it offends you, well, too bad.

The fact that Alabama A&M and Alabama State practically fill Legion Field up every year proves that the excuse about the neighborhood is nothing but fricking bullshite. Absolute. fricking. bullshite. It doesn't matter that its only one game a year. 67,000 people. And neither school is located in the BIrmingham area.

67,000 people...parking, tailgating, walking to the stadium. No worries. If UAB students are too "afraid" of the neighborhood to go to the games, then it's their own fricking fault. End of story. Let's see a significant enough number of UAB supporters actually start giving a shite about their team and come to the games.

So UAB won some games this year. On Nov. 8, an 11:00 AM kickoff against La. Tech. UAB trying to get bowl eligible for the first time in 10 years, the UAB fan base was sooooo excited about their team, that a whopping 9,400 fans showed up. In 2013 UAB fans were so excited that they turned out in droves for their home opener...to the tune of 8,700. And remember...the city has 5,000 season tickets.

This is incorrect. Many football programs turn in a profit. It is the athletic department in whole that doesn't turn in profits.

Why? The same people who vote against sharing wealth practices it with football. Using the millions it generates to pay for their entire athletic budget (even basketball for many programs).

That isn't the case for UAB, although I am quite sure their football program makes much more and has to use those funds to make sure some kid can play lacrosse, swim, etc...
