it's a lose/lose for us really.
If he goes to auburn and succeeds, he is there for the long haul and probably wouldn't even entertain an alabama offer, if he goes to auburn and fails we don't want him anyway.
If Kirby has aspirations to be the head coach at Alabama one day, then he is flushing them down the toilet if he takes over at Auburn.
I think it would be a good hire for them, but let's be honest. NS>>>KS. Him taking the auburn job is perplexing because he's setting himself up for failure and burning bridges in the process

IF, he's going to leave this year, I'd love for Tenn or Arky to come in and swoop him up from Au's noses at the last second.

It would be entertaining to say the least. It would also be entertaining if he decided to stay at Alabama rather than coach there.
He would definitely endear himself to Alabama fans even more than he has already.

Am not necessarily sure he'd stay at Auburn for the long haul. He would still go to Georgia if he's successful.

If he really does want the Bama job like a lot of people have said he does, this would go a long way in garnering him fan/booster support when Saban does decide to hang it up. Taking the Auburn job would, of course, do the exact opposite.
Like others have said though, I like Kirby and I would rather not have to hope that he fails miserably in his profession. So hopefully we hang onto him for another year or he takes a different job.

Put this in the TIFWIW category but this was just posted on 247...(these things are rarely true, but since it's good news, I'll post it and just hope it is true)

A good friend (who is a student at UA and knows a lot of people in athletics and UA media) just posted on facebook with that "From what I'm hearing deal fell through AU and Kirby Smart. Alabama news is still reporting it simply because its a popular news story."

Agree 100%. I would add, If he's considered for Alabama in the future, I wouldn't mind if he went out and coached somewhere else to get a little bit of head coaching experience. If successful, he'd be a shoe-in for the position. Or for Georgia, for that matter.

Is there a possibility we up his pay to mid-tier head coaching levels? 1.5 - 2MM/ year?

Has kirby been interviewed or considered for the arkansas or tennessee jobs? Both are better than Auburn at this point in time, imo.

quote:IMO that's what this whole "Kirby as AU HC" is about. DC's and OC's usually go this route when "asking" for a raise.

Also when a DC,OC...etc is a known hot candidate for a HC position and is called for an interview the cordial way of going about it is to go through the interview process.
But if Kirby was to get the AU HC job IMO would do a great job.

The guy that posted this usually has some pretty legit info. He's been wrong before, but I'd guess he's right more than he's wrong...

For an email Smart has officially declined Auburns offer because Dye involvement won't be compromised.

There is a common rumor going around that Dye is one of Kirby's biggest supporters among the AU power brokers. Technically speaking, Dye is supporting his own ouster from the AU program.
If Kirby really wants Dye gone, I just done see this hire happening. No way Dye takes his fingers out of the pie.

Lucky (Shannon Terry, founder of Rivals and owner of 247) just posted that what he is hearing right now is that Smart to AU is highly unlikely at this time.

My opinion of him would do a 180.

Yeah...the current rumor is that Dye wants Kirby and Kirby basically wants Dye disassociated. If that is true I would imagine that Dye's support for Kirby evaporated with a quickness.
BOL is saying they would be more surprised today than they would have been yesterday if Kirby goes to Auburn....

The latest from Buttateeth:
quote:
Arkansas State head coach and former Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Gene Chizik as Auburn's head football coach.
Gus Malzahn
Despite rampant rumors, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, who interviewed with Auburn's search committee on Monday, was not offered the job. Unless something changes, he is not expected to be offered the job.
Whether Malzahn has an official offer is uncertain, and indications remain that the committee could still be reaching out to other candidates, though there is no confirmation.
"It looks like Gus," a source close to the process said. "Unless they (search committee) are talking to someone else, that's the way it's headed. He was much better in the interview."
It is uncertain whether the committee is continuing to conduct interviews or reach out to other coaches today.
Malzahn was one of three candidates who did face-to-face interviews with Auburn's search committee. The others were Smart and Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris. The committee had a 35-minute telephone conversation with former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino.
Auburn had serious conversations with Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher and also reached out to other head coaches, including TCU's Gary Patterson, Louisville's Charlie Strong and UCLA's Jim Mora. The level of interest shown by any of those coaches is uncertain.
Prominent head coaches typically don't go through a formal interview process.
Malzahn joined the Auburn staff in 2009 after his hurryup, no-huddle scheme led the nation in total offense in back to back years at Tulsa. He helped guide the Tigers to the 2010 national championship and coached Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton.
Unhappy that head coach Gene Chizik had forced changes in his offense, Malzahn took a $500,000 pay cut after last season to become head coach at Arkansas State.
This season, Arkansas State is 9-3 with seven consecutive victories. The Red Wolves crushed Middle Tennessee State 45-0 last Saturday to win the Sun Belt Conference championship and accepted a bid to play in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in Mobile. Two of three losses were to traditional powers Oregon and Nebraska.
For the season, the Red Wolves average 36.4 points, 217.4 yards per game rushing and 264.4 yards per game passing for 481.8 yards per game total. They scored 41 or more points in four of their last five games
