Some people hate to see the jet sweep. I went back and watched and counted three jet sweeps...a 1 yard gain, a 2 yard loss, and the 6 yard Ridley TD...which, in the 2nd quarter, I believe was the last jet sweep where actually Ridley got the ball.

However, I counted about 10 plays thoughout the entire game that started with the jet sweep motion and a fake to him. Those plays included Harris runs of 5 and 7 yards, a 16 yard completion to Dieter, a 46 yard pass to Ridley, and a 65 yard near TD run by Harris, as well as Harris's 1 yard TD run.

Even when we run a jet sweep that doesn't gain yardage, we aren't just running it for the sake of running it. Kiffin obviously uses it to set up other plays run off the same motion.

I'm more pissed about wide receiver screens.

I won't disagree...but I'm more pissed at the execution...missed blocks, Ridley misreading a block and cutting the wrong way, etc.

The same is true of those even if it never came to fruition in this game. Howard's first TD in the CG came because the safety bit on the WR screen look.

We need to get better at running them, regardless of whether they set up other plays or not. It's one thing to gain two or three yards, but we were consistently losing two or three yards on those plays yesterday. That and the penalties helped stall out many drives.

The thing that kills me about our offense are the negative plays and the timing of them.

Yes. This is the frustrating aspect of the screens too. One missed block and you are behind the chains. It can affect your play calling the rest of the series. I am fine with bubbles and sweeps. Not fine with losing yards because of them.

Well we have been running it a lot and Ole Miss was dialed the Frick in......we had better success running between the tackles.....we were gashing them.

Do we lead the league in negative plays again?
I remember CBS posted a Stat during the game mentioning our negative plays compared to Ole Miss.

The bubble screens are pretty frustrating. Sure it spreads the defense out, but when you aren't throwing it downfield then they just crowd the LOS and stop us more often than not. It's like we purposefully shoot ourselves in the dick in the first quarter or two, and then decide to take advantage of the opposing team's assumptions in the third and fourth quarters. It's nitpicking, but we shouldn't have to have so many negative plays in the first half just to set up some good ones in the second half.

I just wish we'd run them after we start to get things going. Early on most teams are gonna crowd the line and dare us to throw. And you are right, the sweep/action sets up other stuff but I just think the timing in the game is a little off.

Based on QB execution, I'm not comfortable with throwing it downfield a lot, and I'm pretty sure that's what the coaches are thinking, too. Hurts has missed on more open receivers downfield than he has connected this season, and on at least a couple of the deep completions, the wide open receiver has had to wait or come back for the ball.

He's still maturing. Let him practice more deep balls against teams like Kent St., so the bad passes aren't critical wasted downs. He'll be ready in time to torch the Faux DBU.
