No way can I say right now that Sims is better than AJ. Statistically? Yes. But I need to see Sims performance in the playoffs before I can make a definitive statement like that. Are we so quick to forget that AJ was clutch in the two title games?

This. If Sims takes us to the promised land, then I'd put him on equal footing. And personally like him better.

But it's all about the titles.

Lol dude. You're blaming 11 lsu and 12 A&M on AJ? Get real.

Nope, never said that. We are talking about QB mistakes, and AJ made some costly ones in those games.

I have to say yea. He cant make all of the throws Mccarron makes but the ones he can make, he makes better. Case and point is the deep ball.

20 or 30 times? Last year AJ had 10 sacks. So, he would double or triple that this year?
absolutely, especially earlier in the year, blake got out of so many sacks with his shiftiness. aj would have just been standing there.

AJ had a great deep ball in 2012. Not the same after the 2013 ut game when he got injured.

Sims seems to miss on a lot less than AJ did. I also know there are probably other variables involved.

One of those being Cooper is a monster this year. He has had ridiculous separation on the deep ball this year.

AJ probably wouldn't have been sacked 30 times this year. Our oline this year is arguably better than last year. He probably would have thrown more passes out of bounds.

Blake throws a better deep ball and is better at escaping a pass rush, IMO.

Escaping pass rush yes, better deep ball NO... I love Sims and he has been a pleasant surprise but he won't get drafted and there is a reason for that. Sims has benefited greatly from Kiffin and a SUPREMELY talented Amari Cooper. That can't be underestimated.. AJ is one of the best Bama QB's of all time and was a Heisman trophy finalist. If he had Kiffin as his coordinator and was allowed to play more wide open, he could have put up even better numbers.

IMO Sims zones in on Cooper(perhaps that is by design) but AJ seemed to spread out the wealth a little better.

Again I'm not knocking Sims, he has probably won a few games for us and is a good QB but AJ is much better.

He can't read defenses like aj. His deep ball is much better. That is all I got.

Disagree.

AJ had Cooper for two years. Kiffin sets the plays up, sure, but he isn't the one throwing the ball.

Blake would've been a Heisman finalist last year too.

I mean, I guess, but AJ threw it plenty last year and in 2012. There still is no way to know that.

I just don't buy this. Numbers don't prove this. Really the only argument I see is that Blake had a different OC than McCarron.

Some really good post, thoughts and debate.

I agree we really need to see what Blake does in the play offs before there can be a true comparison.

Very tough question

Had we had Mccarron this year instead of Sims, we would be a 3 or 4 loss team.

Mccarron on the other hand won multiple championships.

Both very good in their own right

What do you base this on? So, he would have more losses as a fourth year starter than he ever had at any point in his career.

Cause that's completely logical.

Sims legs have been key to avoid sacks (losses of yardage) and extending plays. See the game against Miss State as an example. Picked up 2 huge first downs doing this. If it were Mccarron, he doesn't have the speed to avoid a lot of the pass rushers we've faced. Mccarron would've been sacked quite a bit against LSU

That's what I base it on

Well, I don't think this team would have the same type of attitude if AJ were still the QB. The team rallied around Blake. This would be a completely different team if AJ were here now.

AJ had more losses in his last season than he had the two previous years so its not a stretch to think we would've lost a few more this year against a tougher schedule than he had in those years.

In the end...who knows.

See, you assume the game or season would have gone the same way if AJ had been here. It wouldn't. Why would AJ have to make those big first downs when he would likely have found a RB or WR to get them for him. Are you saying he can't read a defense or dump the ball off to a RB? Blake ran because he had to run.

For frick's sake, to hear some of you talk our Heisman candidate, 2 time national champion was grossly inferior to a guy who couldn't crack the starting lineup for five years.

Blake has turned into a good QB and has made the most of his talent and skill set, but AJ is a vastly superior QB in nearly every phase of the game.

One thing that was underappreciated about AJ was his ability to sense the rush, move around in the pocket, and throw it away if no one was open. He was not however able to just make a free rusher miss the way Blake can. So, there would've been a few more sacks with AJ than Blake this year, but I think it would've been on the order of 4 or 5 more.

They are/were both good. AJ has the greater body of work. Blake has far exceeded expectations.

AJ's pocket awareness was the one "elite" talent/skill he had according to most scouts. He was very good at everything else, but that was truly elite. AJ was the reason those linemen could hold their blocks as long as they did. He set them up to succeed by how he moved in the pocket.

Did I say AJ couldn't read a defense? And who's saying AJ is inferior to Blake?
