Inside coach Nick Saban's office following last season, Alabama defensive lineman Darren Lake sat and listened as Saban expressed his displeasured regarding Lake's play, told Lake he needed to lose weight and presented the now senior nose tackle with an ultimatum.

"Saban told him, 'If you don't get the job done, I'm going to move you to the offensive line,'" Lake's high school coach, Andre Pickering, told AL.com.

I like that we are trying to go for a leaner defense.

quote:

Coaches from other schools called Pickering leading into the spring explaining why Lake should leave Alabama and transfer to their respective school.

"Coaches were calling me from everywhere saying, 'He needs to transfer. He needs to transfer. He's not going to get on the field his senior year,'" Pickering said.

However, Lake never mentioned wanting to leave Alabama, Pickering said.

"He's totally committed to University of Alabama," Pickering said. "I never really talked about it with him. I was waiting on the conversation to come up. So I said, 'OK, if you go into the spring and you're not starting, what's your plan?'

"And his whole thing was, I'm going to graduate, I want to be a judge one day, and I'm totally committed to the University of Alabama. So we didn't have anymore conversations about that."

Coaches of other schools are allowed to lobby his former high school coach like that? Seems like that would be tampering

As the product of a really small school, I've been rooting for Lake since he committed. Hopefully, this will be his year but it's an uphill battle with the talent we have on the DL. Hard to believe he's a senior already. He's somewhat of a unique case. Rare for a DL to not redshirt unless he's destined to be a stud/starter by year 3

Good for Lake. He has at least embraced his education but I wonder why he didn't graduate last year?

Sounds like a smart kid thinking about long term gains over short. I never understood why so many would take a year or two of playing football at a smaller school over getting a degree from a big school that looks far more impressive for the rest of your life.

He didn't enroll early and didn't redshirt so he's only been in school 3 years. I know they take summer classes, and some guys manage to graduate a full year early but it's not that common. He also came from Sumter County HS which may not have been the best at prepping him for the academic rigors of college.

It's the poorest county in the state. Median household annual income is $18k. There's no money for education, or anything else, for that matter.

I'm not sure I like what this says about our offensive line.

I'm sure Darren Lake would be a solid third string right guard.

I guess Saban had to motivate him some way. I guess the DTs see the oline as the equivalent of timeout
