I don't think we're going to need elite QB play to win a national title this year...

Everything I'm reading and digesting tends to tell me that our offensive line is elite, our running backs are really good, and our DBs and linebackers are elite. We don't have a Tua Tagovailoa or a Bryce Young at QB, but frankly I don't think we need someone like that this year. We have the pieces in place to win a title how we used to pre-2016/17.

We're going to pound the rock, stretch the field on play action, and rely on the defense to stop our opponents and get us the ball back.

Need a QB that can be:
- Consistent
- Clutch
- Low-Mistake

If the QB position can give us that, they'll be good enough. Anything better is a bonus.

But also, that's a lot to ask. Let's not take it for granted just because we've had a run of studs.

Might not need elite, but will need very good.

Few mistakes

So essentially we need a Jacob Coker or Greg McElroy level QB- I think the issue with that line of thought is that our defense should be improved from last year, but it’s a far cry talent wise from our elite defenses of the past where we won with a game manager at QB. Those teams also had elite, first round talent skill players on offense.

I’m not writing anything off until I see it, but on paper a natty looks like a long shot to me. I think we’ve got good players on the defensive front, but I don’t think we’ve got a Reed, Robinson, Allen, or Payne. There isn’t a Julio, Ingram, Richardson, or Henry on offense. There could be 3 eventual first rounders in the secondary, which on paper is a position group that I think we stack up with some of the past greats.

I agree that we don’t need elite QB play in the traditional sense. I think if Milroe can pass at that level and take care of the football at that level (McElroy/Coker), in addition to his running ability, then we can win it all. Despite a higher ceiling, I have my doubts that freshman Ty Simpson would be more than a marginally better QB at this stage than the aforementioned game managers.

I would take 2014 Blake Sims at QB in a heartbeat vs the unknown. I think this defense will be a little better than that one, but we don’t have two first round pass catchers on this team like that one did and they didn’t win it all. I don’t know. We’ll find out soon enough. The games aren’t played on paper. There’s just not enough coming out of camp at the QB position to give me a great feeling about it. Terms like inconsistent and erratic relative to Milroe is troublesome, because I think we need his running skillset to win it all

You could make an argument that only 4 teams in the last 10 years have had a truly elite QB and won the National Championship.

What you cannot have is a liability at the position. As long as one or two of them can effectively move the ball and keep the defense out of tough spots - especially in the big games - then everything should play out just fine.

And I just don't see us having one this year.

How long has it been since we've truly had a liability at the position who was a full-time starter?

Chris Capps?

ETA: I read that as a liability at any position, not just qb… So I’ll change to Spenser Pennington

I do.
Maybe not every game, but there will be that one drive, that one game (or more) he'll need to be elite.

We're loaded with 4 and 5 star QB recruits. We damn well should be able to find one legit All SEC type guy under center.

Tua for a game and Mac Jones but honestly we could have had someone less than Mac Jones and won but damn it was nice to not have to worry about the QB at all.

True enough. Honestly all I want from the QB position is someone who limits mistakes. Even if they're also a playmaker.

I agree. Just don’t lose us the game and distribute to playmakers. I think if we do that we can go far and maybe it comes down to a few plays.

We've had less-than-elite QBs have that "one game" or "one drive" throughout the history of the program. Greg McElroy in the final drive against Auburn and the 2009 SEC Championship immediately come to mind.

What we need is the same type of QB we've always won championships with.

We need a game manager who plays with confidence. Gets everybody lined up right on every single play. A really smart guy who knows the offense just as well as the OC.

We need a guy who may not be "elite", but still has enough talent to make the occasional big play to an open receiver. Think Greg McElroy, Jake Coker, or AJ McCarron. All of those dudes made some big time passes when the moment called for it, especially the latter 2.

When I hear myself describe all of these things, my mind goes to Ty Simpson. The fact of the matter is, we've never won much of anything with a running QB at Alabama. There may be a reason for that

I'm thinking Ty Simpson may be in line for the job - as long as he is limiting mistakes (i.e. turnovers) in practice.

I'm hoping he is a Coker kinda guy. Strong arm, tough as nails, and can run (did it in HS) when needed. He is younger too - a lot room for improvement.

Still have Milroe there for a change-of-pace and a serious run-threat, albeit a middle-of the-road passer.
