In my time at UA I don't remember the SGA doing much of anything in terms of improving student life. I was pretty apathetic to it all.
Hopefully this Spillers kid can change that a bit.
I can see the Machine becoming less and less of an influence with the out of state kids and the online voting.

Interesting. A black non Greek defeated the machine back in the seventies as well.

Yep. 1984 was the big upset because it was the first time a nongreek had won it in 30ish years IIRC

Prediction: Black fraternities invited into the machine
The black fraternities endorsed Keller actually, he hangs out with them a good bit. Lots of sorority girls voted for Elliot and I think thats where the race was ultimately won for him.

Good thing to happen after what happened to SAE at OU

Wasn't just the sororities. Sigma Nu, ATO, a lot of KA's. Probably more than that, but those are the ones I know of for sure.

Kendra Key almost won in 2009 vs. Steven Oliver. Lots of controversy around the election. People wanting recounts and what not. It was really close.
Following that, there wasn't really a strong independent candidate, and a lot of times the better candidate was the Machine backed candidate.
I always had the opinion that anyone elected was gonna work to better the campus. Some may be more effective than others. But no one was gonna cause any lasting damage to UA. It's out of their power.
I had a small involvement in the SGA as webmaster for a few years. They did good things. Just a lot of times it required students to get involved or sign up to benefit. Or it was focused on a certain problem that many students didn't face. Or students didn't even notice SGA initiatives that helped them in one way or another.
I remember them starting up the night route of the Crimson Ride. Setting up away game bus travels. shite like that.

I mentioned this election in a post on the OT in regards to never knowing who would win an election. That is about as close as you can get especially when you consider what allegedly went down that night.

Do they still have that mysterious black stalker van with "The Machine" written on it? I saw it a time or two but only late at night. God knows what they were doing.

As the post below this said, you can thank the sororities for the 76 election. It was all blue blood "good ole boy" prior to that. After that the most influential sororities were asked to join the machine and they did. I recommended my sorority not join, but they did. Since then I have taken every chance I could to urge the leadership to break with this group which is racist, anti women, crooked and has controlled Alabama politics for decades.
I understand the sororities and non machine fraternities had a big hand in this.

This group continues to control Alabama politics. Alabama politics = total corruption.

I'd personally really approve if the machine were to start controlling the city of Birmingham politics though..

For someone who has absolutely 0 idea of the backstory yall are talking about, what exactly happened?

Allegedly there were people bringing laptops to bars and forcing people to vote

A lot of allegations around illegal vote counting. Typically the voting ends at 7pm, but that year they extended the voting hours until midnight. There are a lot of stories of laptops being set up in Gallettes (bar on the strip near campus) and folks using their younger siblings (high school aged) myBama accounts to cast votes.
The Machine is small potatoes, but it does indoctrinate a lot of career politicians within the state. It's the front door to the Alabama state political universe. Sad but true.

That makes me even more happy about the machine defeat. DKE=arrogant racist, and even worse

The machine is just a bunch of rich white trash scumbags anyway. The same trash that is destroying this state as politicians were part of the machine. The state of Alabama is a joke, always has been and always will be.
