I'm liking the job he's doing so far and he's already proven he's a leader by his decision to fire Goff even though it was slightly controversial considering it was year 1. That was a hard thing to do because of the circumstances. Granted, Goff made it easier by being a complete tool and a failure all at once, but still, int wasn't a slam dunk in some eyes.

But that brings me to the point of my post. It just hit me that Greg Byrne took the Alabama AD job knowing that his career will be defined by the person he names to replace Nick Saban. That took balls. He will almost certainly have to do it in the not too distant future and unless he doesn't plan on staying in Tuscaloosa the job will fall to him. Can you imagine? No matter who he hires, they won't be good enough. And if he goes with someone outside the list of suspected candidates (Dabo, Kirby, Mac, etc) he and they will be excoriated by fans and media alike every time he loses a game.

Just knowing that he took the job with that Sword of Damocles hanging over his head makes me like the guy even more. This guy is ice cold.

Already posted on the basketball thread, but he's looking at Coleman Coliseum and the basketball facilities and seeing what needs to be done.

Tear that shite down, Byrne!!

I disagree with the sentiment that whoever follows Saban won't be considered successful. If they win one NC, everyone will be content for at least several years. The reason people weren't content with Ray Perkins after Bryant was that Perkins just wasn't a good coach. They underachieved every year he was there and the highlight of his tenure was a Sun Bowl. Decidedly unimpressive, and he still could've been at Bama into the 90s if he didn't leave for the NFL. Most the fans and the people making the decisions will understand we're not going to get another Saban. But there's no reason we can't have someone who wins at a high level.

I hope you're joking about Kirby Smart and Jim McElwain as suspected candidates.

They aren't MY candidates but they are often mentioned.

My candidate is Dabo for now. It remains to be seen what he can do without Watson. Dabo has earned a look.

Dabo was winning 10+ games with Tahj Boyd. He'd murder as HC at Alabama just by overall talent level increase alone.

I'm interested to see how Dabo's teams perform post NC. That's what has separated Saban from everyone else, and makes Meyer second to Saban but way ahead of third place.

If Dabo can put together a 2 or 3 more good seasons and be in the hunt for a NC then I say we hand him the keys to the program once Saban retires.

As of right now though, who am I kidding...I'd be happy with Dabo next year if Saban decided to hang it up. But I'd be even more thrilled to see sustained success from him over the next couple years.

Great post! Although don't assume that decisions are going to happen so soon. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I don't think Saban is looking at the two four-year Horizon..

Well, and there were the old factions that wanted to control the program. Most of those people are dead or in diapers again.

That...and you had the academic, bow tie crowd in the administration who wanted to dial back and reign in the football culture that existed under Bryant....two world's colliding and just bad leadership.

Saban isn't going anywhere for awhile so hopefully when the time comes we can negotiate a soft landing and get the right guy this time. Hopefully we learned our lessons and I think the Saban era shows how the athletic side can coexist with the academic side. In fact, a successful program can lift all boats if its managed correctly. I just worry when we don't have someone with the force of personality of Saban to keep the homers in line.

I'm still not convinced Dabo would come. People that I know that know him say it's far from a slam dunk. No doubt he loves Alabama but he's got a great thing going at Clemson. His family loves it there and the University is giving him everything he wants. Even if the program slid back to just winning the ACC once every several years, his job would be safe.

If nothing else, Greg Byrne has already shown he knows how to do his job. I'm supremely confident he will do the job right when the time comes.

You think Bill Battle would have run Greg Goff after one season? And if he did, do you think he would have hired someone with the credentials of Bohannon? I feel better about the athletic department now than I ever have because we have the best AD in America running the best athletic department in America. Bama stacked, NCAA fricked!!

I'm very confident in Byrne. Feels like we finally have an AD who wants to be a leader instead of a placeholder.
